I want some escapism for fuck sake.

You may want to try subscribing to non-political communities, and then browsing by subscribe. For example, here's a list of communities I subscribe to for when I don't want to read about politics:

click here for a list of communities that are NOT politics, tech, or meme -related.

Most are currently active (except for the ones with a * which were less active last I checked) Sometimes politics, tech or memes sneak in but they're not the focus.

https://lemm.ee/post/65824884 for details.

Moderators interested in migrating to a new community on another instance might want to consider selecting an instance and doing so sooner rather than later so that users here have time to see a migration post here and subscribe to the new community.

The sole moderator here, @gandolfini_[email protected], last commented/posted a month ago. I've no idea how closely he's monitoring the situation, but it's possible that if he doesn't log in for the next three weeks, he might not notice what's going on until after the instance has gone down.

If that happens, then he won't have a great way to point to any new community. Maybe monitor [email protected] or [email protected], and he could post an announcement there?

The exclamation point format is this:

[[email protected]](/c/[email protected])

As an example, mentions should look like these:

[email protected]
[email protected]

This is especially relevant when promoting a new community in the aforementioned communities, as otherwise it's less convenient to visit and join your community. A standard link would take someone off-site to whichever site the community's on, instead of its copy on their home site.

Forgot to include this key point as I was writing and revising all this:
Include these mentions in your post bodies! Having it in the title of the post alone doesn't help, as it doesn't create any link to click or tap through.

p.s. when typing these mentions, the WebUI will try to provide suggestions to autocomplete, select the right one and it should do the trick. App interfaces will vary but should provide some method to do similar in their post/comment editors, either try typing the mention or looking for an exclamation point in the editor and following what the interface offers to help.

Not my community, but I figured it might be of interest to gamers here. Post stolen right off of [email protected].

This community is to find that game you can’t remember. Like it’s on the tip of your tongue.

Do you remember something about a game, but can’t find the title? Do you want to finally know what it is? Post here and maybe someone can help.

Come to find your game, or help others find theirs!

I often come across ideas for new communities (sometimes I even have them myself), but I'm not always sure whether they would get traction.

How about a "suggest a community" community, where people can post suggestions, and get feedback on the idea, maybe tweak it a bit to be more useful, and also look for co-moderators?

It could act in parallel to [email protected]

Anyone have any ideas for how this could work better? Anyone want to co-moderate one?

This is a more focused revision of a post I made a few months ago, with an aim to help with discovery across the fediverse.

List of various directory/index-style sites to help find people/communities of interest
Software overview

Finding instances/software-agnostic

Microblog specific

Forum/link aggregator specific

Video/Streaming specific

Searching and Following methods
This will vary across software, and may change as it changes, so take note of when this was written (end of March 2025).

By default, ActivityPub sites don't know of other, remote sites. Any remote site stuff you're seeing is because somehow the site your on was made aware of the other's stuff. Typically this may be that a user learns of a remote site's stuff in some way and decides to follow from their home site by looking it up via their site's search then subscribing/following.

All of the above format-specific links I've provided above are means of finding some remote sites' stuff to follow on one's home site. Below are some additional tools and methods to further help when using some of these different sites.

Microblog Tools and Methods
Tools

Methods

  • On Mastodon: follow hashtags to surface other accounts you might want to follow.
    • Also make use of its keyword/hashtag filters to cut down on the sorts of posts you don't want to see by going to account preferences, filters.
  • On Misskey & forks: create custom feeds via the "antenna" feature by choosing keywords and hashtags to track while using the same to exclude/filter out posts with other keywords/hashtags.
    • Also make use of its mute/block settings to cut down on the sorts of posts you don't want to see by going to settings, under other settings, mutes and blocks.
  • Post with hashtags more to help others searching by or following them find your posts. Even if it's just someone else on your home instance, if they share (boost/repost) your post and they have remote followers, it may help increase your visibility across the network.

Forum/link aggregator Tools and Methods
Tools

Methods

  • Follow the aforementioned communities under Forum/link aggregator specific above, or ask in [email protected] or [email protected] about communities.
  • On Piefed/Mbin sites, use the keyword filtering feature to filter out posts you're uninterested in.
  • Browse Local or All with sort set to New to see if any unfamiliar communities show up that you may want to follow.
    • Block communities/instances you're uninterested in to help improve potential communities of interest visibility as you browse.

If you're aware of other resources, tools, or methods that I've not mentioned here, please mention them in the comments! There's undoubtedly more to add that I've not come across.

Hey all, I've created a comm for my favourite infra automation tool: Ansible.

There's one in l.w. but it's been abandoned for a while now and barely has any traffic, so I felt it's a good time to distribute things a while

[email protected]

EDIT: Ignore the thumbnail. Lemmy is bugging out again with the previews.

[–] [email protected] 57 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (7 children)

Yeah, I know what you're saying, especially when I browse "All."

That's why I generally just subscribe to comms that I like (about non-politics non-tech things) and browse "Subscribed". Then when I'm ready after that, then I browse All. Or maybe I just skip All.

click here for a list of communities that are NOT politics, tech, or meme -related.

Most are currently active (except for the ones with a * which were less active last I checked) Sometimes politics, tech or memes sneak in but they're not the focus.

A big welcome to everyone that has joined these past few weeks, we're all very excited to have you joining us! You'll find that people are more than happy to help you get started and learn how to use the site.

If you feel up for it, go ahead and make a post in this community introducing yourself, asking questions, or asking about topics that you want to find communities for. This community is intended for this purpose!

We have put together some resources to help new users get started.

You can also read:

These guides were published very recently, and we will be updating them over time. If you find that something is confusing or missing, please let us know and we can improve them further.

Welcome to Lemmy :)

A few common issues:

"I'm not seeing all the content"

Lemmy allows you to filter out content based on the language, but some new users will set this incorrectly in their settings. Please see this post for help. You can also post in either this community, or [email protected] to ask for more help.

"I want to block posts with certain words"

It is possible to use uBlock Origin to do this in the web browser. See this post for detailed instructions.

There is currently a big influx of new users. Most, if not all, being reddit refugees.

I want to welcome you all to the fediverse, lemmy and retrolemmy specifically. If you need help starting out you can either try [email protected] or you can comment here, post in this community or message me or @[email protected] directly. We are here to help.

Some basic things:

Usernames are usually written out as @[email protected]. The @ in front indicates a user. It looks like an e-mail adress by design, Because there can be users with the same name on different instances. For example: @[email protected]

Communities are usually written out as [email protected] . The exclamation point indicates a community. This also looks like an e-mail address because there can also be communities with the same name on different instances.

Sometimes new communities will not load. This usually means that the community is not yet federated. You can either manually add it to lemmy-federate or you can subscribe. That way the community is federated and posts will show up. If you make a new community it is always good practice to add it to Lemmy federate. To make sure it's federated to all participating instances and maximize your user spread.

Here is a good FAQ via Lemm.ee.

Some good resources for finding communities:

https://lemmyverse.net/ - A website dedicated to finding new communities. Be sure to set your home instance using the domain name: for example: "retrolemmy.com". This is to make sure that if you click a community, it automatically links it through your instance.

https://lemmy-federate.com/ - a website to post communities so that servers' bots automatically subscribe to it, and it will show up in /all on all participating instances.

[email protected] - a community dedicated to promoting new communities.
[email protected] - same as above.
[email protected] - same as above.
[email protected] - lemmy apps community

Apps

There are loads of apps for your phone on the stores. Many of them were refitted from reddit apps to Lemmy. Here's a big megathread with all kinds of apps via lemmy.world
Or you can go to https://lemmyapps.netlify.app/ to find one not in the megathread

We hope you have a good time here!

Thanks for checking this out! Below you'll find a few different resources to help you figure things out around here, but also feel free to ask any questions in the comments below. The aim of this post is to provide a reference point for new and returning people, so save or bookmark it and return to it either to ask questions or simply refresh your memory.

Is there an app?
For sites using Lemmy, yes, several in fact. One of the more often recommended ones for both iOS and Android is the Voyager app. Another cross-platform option is the Thunder app. For questions and discussions of other apps for sites using Lemmy, you may check out [email protected].

For sites using Mbin, and for Android and Linux there's currently the Interstellar app.

For sites using Piefed, there are no apps, but it's built to work well as a Progressive Web App.

Where's support?
Each site and app may have its respective support community and/or support contact info, which will differ accordingly, so this is out of scope for this post. Nevertheless you may ask for guidance below, and there's also the following community for people new to Lemmy in particular: [email protected]

For help and feedback on the software behind the sites, it's a little easier:

Where do I find new communities/subreddits?
Ask here, or [email protected]! You may also browse the front page of your chosen site (such as Lemmy World, Piefed Social, Kbin Earth, or the like), which will usually display the variety of communities people there may have subscribed to.

Otherwise, you may subscribe to the following communities:

Lastly, you may check out Lemmyverse to search even more broadly.

Can I make my own community?
It depends on the site you signed up on, but usually yes. Generally it's better to do so from a computer than a smartphone though, as you're less likely to run into odd issues that way. If you find you can't for some reason, ask below (mentioning whether trying from computer/smartphone and using apps or not) and someone may try to help you out, directing you to your site's support or otherwise.

If all has gone well, you may want to subscribe to [email protected] to talk to others working on building up communities.

Why is it asking me to sign in to post a comment?
You may have followed a link to a different site using Lemmy (or the like) than the one you registered on without realizing it, which at present is an unfortunate rough edge of things here. Signing up to one site doesn't provide a single sign-on to other sites using Lemmy or similar.

What's federation?
Without getting into the weeds, it's different websites sharing content between themselves to enable interaction with each other. Unless you're deep into all this or issues arise, ideally this should fade into the background. It's talked about a lot currently because many here are deep into it, and a lot of the software built around it is still developing, so unfortunately issues do still occur.

Any other questions or resources to add, the comments are open!

Kind of a companion thread to the recent one on [email protected] asking people which community there were missing.

I had a quick look, and most of those seem to be niches that can't be filled until we reach a higher population.

There is still maybe some potential improvement about some less well-known community that other people are interested in and that could some additional activity.

I try to help to make less known communities known with the regular threads on [email protected] (now moving to [email protected] ), but there is probably only a level of detail we have to stop at with 47k monthly active users.

One example is [email protected], it seems reasonable active, and is probably a better compromise than having each game having its own community.

Similar with [email protected], or [email protected]. I posted a thread about Ted Lasso a few days ago, it got some nice comments, but probably not enough to have a full fledged dedicated community.

Vous l'aurez sans doute remarqué, Jlai.lu n'est pas encore super actif, notamment sur les sujets de niches. Comme le Reddit des débuts, c'est souvent plus simple de trouver une communauté en anglais avec plus de monde.

Hey everyone. I thought it would be nice to keep a running list of generally high-quality communities available on Lemmy.

Probably I'm not the first person who has thought of this, but I haven't actually seen one. If this is useful, let me know, and I can keep it updated, or let me know any additions you think would be useful.

Feel free to block communities with political content.

You can also use an app or alternative frontend to filter keywords. [email protected] has a post about that.

For communities, [email protected] can help

For home kit, the Apple communities are probably more active, and you should be able to post about it there too

[–] [email protected] 26 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

the main reason is because the people who run lemmy.ml are actually the people whi created lemmy.

Also welcome.

[email protected] and [email protected] are useful for new users.

Also if you’re looking for an instance that has ML defederatrd but is still well federated with everything else I recommend lemmy.cafe

If you build it, they will come

Plan it out, spin it up, and then announce it at [email protected] or somewhere.

Welcome here!

Copy pasting from a recent thread on /r/RedditAlternatives trying to address usual criticism against Lemmy.

Federation is confusing, people want a single website they can go to

Email has been working on a federation model for decades. People have to remember if they use Gmail or Outlook, but that's it. It's similar here.

Several communities have the same name, it's confusing, active communities are hard to find

Reddit has a similar issue: you have /r/games as the main gaming community, but there is also /r/Gaming, /r/videogames /r/gamers, etc.

How does someone know what the main community is, whatever the platform? Looking at the number of subscribers and active members.

There was the example of beekeeping: if you search for that topic, the most active one is definitely https://mander.xyz/c/beekeeping with 97 users per month.

The others have barely 1 user: https://lemmyverse.net/communities?query=beekeeping

To find active communities: https://lemm.ee/c/[email protected]. There are regular threads with active communities on topic such as gardening, movies, board games, anime, science, etc.

Who is going to pay for the server costs?

Here is a link to this question to Lemmy admins: https://lemm.ee/post/41577902

Summary of the answers:

  • lowest number so far: lemmy.ml with 0.03€ per user per month
  • a few others (feddit.uk, lemmy.zip) have around 0.11$ per user per month
  • some instances are running on infrastructure that the admins would be anyway, so it's virtually "free"

Most of the instances costs are paid using donations. They regularly post financial updates such as this one: https://lemm.ee/post/41235568

Obviously there is a sweet stop where you can minimize the cost by having the maximum number of users on a fixed infrastructure cost.

If you want to have a look at the number of monthly active user (the "MAU" column): https://fedidb.org/software/lemmy/

Anyway, $ per user is usually meaningless because most of the servers are small enough to be hosted on some random cheap server - adding more users doesn't cost more because they are still well below server capacity. Only the biggest servers have to worry about $ per user.

I had posted this earlier this week on this thread: https://old.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/1fiuuo5/how_much_does_it_cost_per_user_to_host_a_lemmy/

There is too much political content

You can block entire servers and specific communities.

Instances to block to avoid political content

Communities to block

With those blocked, you are avoiding 95% of the political content. There might be a few other communities that pop up, but blocking them is still one click away.

Lemmy is developped by hardcore tankies and I don't want to use their software

As Lemmy is federated using an open protocol, there are other options to connect to the communities without using Lemmy itself.

The first one is Piefed: https://piefed.social/c/[email protected]

The other one is Mbin: https://fedia.io/m/[email protected]

However, those are stil a bit less mature than Lemmy, so for instance if you want to use mobile apps a lot, Lemmy is a better choice.

On top of that, every Lemmy server is managed by different people. You can see regular criticism of lemmy.ml (the instance managed by the Lemmy devs) on threads such as this: https://lemm.ee/post/33872586 or even dedicated communities like https://lemm.ee/c/[email protected]

That shows that even the Lemmy devs are not protected from criticism.

There isn't enough people

Lemmy has 46k monthly active users (https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/dailystats) (Mbin and Piefed have around 800 each). Active user is someone who voted, posted or commented.

In comparison, Discuit, which was praised during the API shutdown as "easier to use as it's centralized" has 234 active users: https://discuit.net/DiscuitMeta/post/KdiI1akq. Not 234k, 234 total.

For obvious reasons, the activity is not going to match Reddit levels, and niche communities aren't there.

But it's not an all or nothing situation. Most people on Lemmy still use Reddit for their niche communities, but are also active on Lemmy. And some niche communities are getting more active on lemmy. https://lemm.ee/c/[email protected] ([email protected] ) promotes them.

Also, having less people provides better interactions, as your comments are less likely to get buried in thousands of others. And bots on Lemmy are quickly spotted and banned, while Reddit doesn't seem to do much about that: https://old.reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/comments/1fmcelm/askreddit_is_simply_over_run_with_bots/

[–] [email protected] 25 points 11 months ago

Which content are you interested in?

https://lemmit.online/ can be used to crosspost content from Reddit, but you won't get much comments as people tend to prefer content curated by humans

[email protected] has a weekly thread with active communities.

[–] [email protected] 39 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

[email protected] helps. You can also post about them in related communities if the community rules allow and communities can partner with each other to link in community sidebars.

[–] [email protected] 81 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (5 children)

The list of apps is pretty out of date. For example, Boost already came out and [email protected] is a pretty popular extension. I use it a lot to make posts, and just used it to open that post on my instance.

Also related is how to find communities

I help with [email protected], and the idea is that you can subscribe to keep seeing more recommendations. We also have a guide for finding new communities here: https://lemmy.ca/post/5581032, which I've copied below:

A great way to find lesser known communities is to look at the /communities page on an instance. For example: https://lemmy.ca/communities

For a list of instances to look through:

  • pangora.social (NEW): Great way to find instances related to a particular topic. This is also great for picking an instance when first making an account/moving accounts.
  • awesome-lemmy-instances: not that organized, but it

Don’t use the “all” feed. I only use it to discover new communities (but there is also a specific community for that).

For my daily browsing I exclusively use the “subscribed” feed.

Edit: the community I mentioned is https://lemmy.world/c/[email protected] or [email protected]

[–] [email protected] 70 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (3 children)

Go to the communities page for your instance, set it to all, and scroll through the first several pages adding anything that sounds interesting. Don't worry if there are duplicates, sub them all. The search for any favorite topics and add those communities, too. Then browse by subscribed»new going forward.

You can also check out [email protected] for communities still getting off the ground.

Oh! And when linking, do it like I did above; this link works no matter what instance you're on.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That's a good question actually. there is [email protected] for communities, maybe you can reach out to them to see if you can also promote your server?

[–] [email protected] 29 points 2 years ago (4 children)

Yeah it's tricky. I don't want to start a niche community cause i don't want to be a mod, but i guess maybe the best thing to do is start the community i want, pin a post saying "mods wanted", and post it to [email protected]

[–] [email protected] 37 points 2 years ago (3 children)
