Thanks for the greenboard tip. I hadn't heard of that before.

It does feel like one of those simple-but-heavy problems.

cross-posted from: https://hexbear.net/post/5550838

For example, this week I spent 6 hours helping a friend fix their roof & 0 fixing the leak in my roof. Most of the meals that I cooked were when I had company or going to a potluck. It takes me until the umpteenth 'let me just squish it down' and the flies start buzzing to take the trash out....

...It feels like if I were a stranger, I would take better care of myself than I do, if that makes sense?

In general, I feel like I am a very values- and care-driven person. Like what feels meaningful is taking care of my community and working towards the world I want to live in. I have a good reputation in my community & activist circles for consistent work and following through on what I commit to do....

...none of that seems to apply to myself! My dishes sit in the sink for days, and I usually only bathe in preparation for public events.

This will not do! How do I treat myself like I treat others? Ahhhh!

E: From more reading, it looks like some kind of mineral wool will be the best thing to place between the studs. I also feel content adding MLV to the bathroom-side since the waterproofing underlayment for the shower is also effectively a moisture barrier. That way, any moisture-allowing failures can still permeate out the exterior wall and to the adjoining rooms.

As the title suggests, I want to soundproof my bathroom. It is right next to the kitchen (top hangout space) AND my disabled (relevant bc this is the only accessible bedroom) uncle's bedroom. We want to hang out and be able to use the bathroom later than my uncle wants to stay up, but the noise is bothersome to him. There are demons in his colon, too, which do not complement breakfast.

We live in this huge, cheap, almost-down-to-the-studs house that I bought so the only practical limit to renovations is money. How can I soundproof the bathroom? Right now it's just old lathe between his room and the bathroom, and the bathroom and the kitchen. I'm already planning to put 5/8" thick drywall once we get there, but figuring out what else I can do. We putty'd the back of the outlets in the shared walls, and made sure the doors are real tight so there won't be a fit issue there.

Brain Genius or Setting Myself Up for Catastrophic Mold with MLV?

I was thinking to put mass-loaded vinyl on both sides of the walls, but since the bathroom obviously generates a lot of steam and moisture, I am worried that small failures will trap a lot of moisture in the internal walls and lead to mold and structural damage. Now neither of the walls to the bathroom are structural but I am so afraid of mold damage. When I rebuild the shower, I plan to make it curbless and waterproof the shit out of its enclosure, but I imagine there will still be some amount of moisture leakage outwards especially since I probably won't do tile to the ceiling.

Which Leads me to a Brain-Genius Solution

Why not load the area between the studs with a lot of drywall? I can further isolate my uncle's room with hangers or other gaps so there isn't a rigid member (the studs) directly behind the drywall. Now space in the bathroom-facing wall in the kitchen is very precious. Losing 1-2" inches to isolate it would mean I can't use off-the-shelf cabinets and makes building it nice sort of impossible for what I can afford. I am categorizing the worst bathroom noises to be "aerial" noises and not structural noises since footsteps do not bother us too much. I wonder if I can contain them well by mass-loading the walls with extra dry-wall offcuts and things. It will be very easy to reinforce the joists this walls rest on from the basement so I don't see any drawbacks but I don't know how super effective this strategy would be.

Any advice is good! Like I said, my main concern is the effectiveness of bootleg mass-loading and avoiding a moisture trap. Also if it is relevant the building is brick with 2x4 studs on the external walls faced by plaster (in the old sections) and drywall in the new sections. Uncle's bedroom, the bathroom, and the kitchen are all along the same external wall. The plumbing wall for the kitchen and the bathroom is the same one.

Thanks!

Seconding @woodenghost@hexbear.net. You have a responsibility to your partner to keep these double-dates a group event and not two parallel conversations.

Right now your proposition to her is basically 'Give up however many hours of your limited freetime so I can hang out with my buddy! I am going to ignore you and stick you with someone you actively dislike hanging out with.' How else do you expect a rational person to feel about that?

De-industrialization in the West was made possible by the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the scenario you describe.

The primary contradiction shifts from the domestic contradiction between the workers and the bourgeoisie to the contradiction between imperialist and colonized nations. This is the same reason why there is a star for national capitalists on the flag of the PRC!

Thanks for the clarification! I remember the brief negative oil prices during March 2020 as speculators suddenly were on the hook to collect oil which there was no demand for and for which they had no facilities.

I think it's important to make use of it while it's available but still be critical/suspicious. In the meantime, Pal Action is making some real wins. I am sorry to hear about the pain and hardship he has caused your comrades and organization. For radical movements to really be sustainable, they need to be member funded and independent of these fickle streams of support which can be turned off at a whim.

Why are coffee prices given in cents per pound but referred to as dollars per pound in source material?

Partisan usually refers to guerilla bands without strong institutions or state infrastructure. For example, it doesn't really apply to Hezbollah which is a quasi-state and approaching a conventional military. It certainly doesn't apply to Iran which is a conventonal army.

I'm familiar with that source! Thank you so much for sharing and for taking the time to make the relevant sections parsable.

Why do you think it is funny to mock and comment on the body of someone who looks different from you? This is embarrassing. I encourage you to reflect on yourself and your media habits.

I moved into a rundown house and am gradually fixing it up to house people. Making it accessible is a priority and I am getting ready to start the kitchen. I would like to know what features and placements wheelchair users would like in a kitchen.

In particular, shelf and cabinet placement, and oven placement. I know every work area needs to have leg room beneath it, but it's harder to find design guidelines for other aspects.

Dear comrades, recently I have been stuck in interpersonal conflict in my political life. This has made one of my main avenues for empowerment and dealing with the weight of the world less effective. As a consequence, I have had recurring urges to overeat. It has negatively impacted my health and energy beyond the general lethargy of mild depression.

Does anyone have any strategies or advice for compassionately handling these impulses? My wallet and body will surely thank you.

It's got ginger, cucumber, lemon, and lime. I made a hat for the urn from tinfoil so it's a bit airtight ig. My dream is to drink it for the next 4-5 days but I don't want to get sick.

Produce is really cheap by me and all I want to eat is various fruit salads. I am too lazy to fully efficiently extract the yimmy and the yummy from each fruit, so I thought I would use them to make yimmyyummy water.

Also! Don't be afraid of a few savory or aromatic ingredients in a fruit salad!

Recipe:

  • Big cucumber diced smallish
  • Raspberries (3-4 oz? I ate a few)
  • 3 Plums diced into bigger pieces (they are the anchor)
  • 2 limes ( juice + ~4 cm x 1 cm of zest very fine chopped)
  • 2 little lemons ( juice + ~4 cm x 1 cm of zest very fine chopped)
  • 1 bunch (5-6) green onions
  • 1 bunch cilantro
  • Pinch salt
  • 1 nug ginger very fine chop
  • BIG "pinch" table or brown sugar

Do everything how you would think, and dissolve and mix the sugar, salt, ginger, and cilantro into the juice to make kind of a dressing. This is really good with firmer, tarter plums. I used black plums and it's really pretty!

Like I would have months where I would take out a big pile of cash once and never use my bank card. Other times, I would have certain sides of town where I would use cash only or card only and switch it. I told myself I was playing 'opsec games'. Stupid stupid stupid.

Sometimes I like to laugh. Even since being diagnosed with ADHD, I will dogmatically stick to these bizarre ideas that come to me on a lark. Thankfully, I was able to talk myself out of train hopping with no real purpose or preparation. I've also completely avoided tattoos.
