I wonder if this is "blue flu". Cops in many areas intentionally decreased active law enforcement as a hissy fit in response to defund rhetoric in 2020. I know in my area they basically stopped doing traffic enforcement and people definitely have noticed.

I guess I'm glad if less people are being hassled over bullshit traffic stops, but I'm guessing they haven't actually stopped doing pretexual stops to search for drugs/warrants. Just abandoning one of the few useful things police departments do.

My sister dated a guy who believed this. He once said to me, "If evolution is real why isn't every animal as big as a T-Rex?".

In fairness to him, he grew up in a cult where education was done by whoever felt like doing it that day.

I enjoyed Trust by Hernan Diaz. It's kind of hard to describe, but it's a novel set in the gilded age. It's told in a really neat way through letters and a book within the book.

I also liked The 7 and 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. It's a weird murder mystery with time travel elements.

Reading what I just wrote makes me think I'm bad at describing books because I probably wouldn't read them based on that.

The only thing about taking the PC is that any accounts that have 2 factor authentication(I think that's basically every bank), will likely require a new code if you move it to a different IP address. If your father can provide those codes to you, I'd say just take the computer when your brother isn't around.

You may also want to try adult protective services since your brother seems not to be able to care for himself and is in a bad living situation. They probably aren't equipped for immediate help, but at least they'll be staffed with empathetic people who will know more about your local services.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I wish I had more specific advice to give you.

I hesitate to write this last bit, but I wish someone had told me when my father got sick and I was the child that had to handle everything:

You're doing the right thing and you're a good person for doing it, but take care of yourself as well. There may end up being times when you need to step back for your own health and mental well being, if so, you're not a bad person. You can't help anyone else if you destroy yourself.

I think if I had one of the affected chips, I'd want it to fail while they're still replacing them for free. It sounds like the various measures data center people are using are only slowing the degradation, not eliminating it. Maybe I'd wait until it's clear the issue is not in the replacement chips though.

The high failure rates that have been reported are in situations where the chips are working hard 24/7. I think for most home users, were not going to see the failures for a few years, which is exactly what Intel is counting on by not doing a full recall.

Excellent article.

The stuff about their deal with Microsoft is crazy. MS gets 75% of the profit until they recoup $10B, and free access to any technology OpenAI has or will make until they achieve AGI. So anyone investing in OpenAI is basically only betting that they achieve AGI before they go bankrupt.

That also means Microsoft has little reason to buy OpenAI. Based on the deal, it seems MS is very skeptical of their chances at achieving AGI. It's not a situation where Altman can bluff them into thinking they're making progress, MS has access to see what's really going on.

I use Audiobookbay, and 3xforum

Audiobookbay has a lot of books, but the direct download links are scams or paid. You can use the magnet links, though. Either sign up for an account and you get access to a limited number of magnet links per day, or you can just copy the "infohash" field and put it at the end of "magnet:?xt=urn:btih:" without the quotes, and then paste that into your torrent software.

The 3xforum has direct download links, but a much smaller selection

Qanon has some really creative lore. Like JFK Jr faking his own death and having plastic surgery to avoid being assassinated like his dad, only to come back and help Trump defeat the deep state.

You can have my unconditional love, but keep that trash card. Real gamers use a 3dfx Voodoo 2
