Whatever place, that was robbery.

And while they are at it, put a battery in too.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Could have been me. I’ve been working on this as a hobby for over five years yers since we got solar panels, EV and a dedicated battery for storage.

Smarter devices support demand side response, which is welcome to make the grid more efficient. A good local energy-efficient solution includes in my experience three key ingredients.

First you need local energy storage to allow for extra flexibility to handle life's ebbs and flows. This could be an EV or dedicated storage battery, which can be charged when electricity is abundant, and discharged when supply is tight and something energy hungry needs doing.

Second the grid side will not know when I’m planning to do something energy hungry, or when I want the EV battery full instead of the usual 80% charge. Therefore some way of providing input is needed. It might be possible to learn reasonable local demand forecast models reflecting local behaviour patterns, but I’m not yet convinced about this and tend to trust human guidance more.

Third you need intelligent control to respond to grid signals (e.g. price changes) and combine those with local inputs and any local consumption and production (e.g. from solar panels or micro wind turbines) forecasts.

Energy companies will of course want to have the intelligent control in their hands as it creates them price arbitrage. For majority of consumers that will be the best solution. Some of us will not necessarily want to give them that control and prefer a local solution.

I hope the water didn’t cause much damage.

It was great to have the long weekend. I’m beginning to think that every weekend should be four days!

My wife gave the BBQ a thorough Spring clean while I focused on unscheduled lawnmower maintenance. First BBQ in warm weather is always a treat, and the lawnmower started with first pull, so that was nice.

I think so. But then again, I had read the books beforehand, which made it easier to get going.

I quite like the Apple TV adaptation of Slow Horses. Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb is simply brilliant.

If it’s in a lorry, is it parked? That is, if the lorry isn’t parked. This is confusing.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That sounds like a lot of complication for a humble lawnmower.

Cuts still well enough, maybe next Spring.

I’ve been working a new roofed decking where BBQ and Ooni pizza oven will go. I bought the pizza oven as a bit of an impulse thing and didn’t really think where it will go, so now I have a building project to deal with.

Yesterday the weather was great so I just kept going for far too long for my age. It turns out roofing in April sunshine is exhausting and seemingly requires muscles I don’t appear to be using that often. On the bright side I did not burn myself as I slapped plenty of SPF 50 on.

I also did a good few walks with our dogs and explored new forrest paths we haven’t been to before. We knew of them but never got round going there.

I’d call this a very good week.

UK has it great when it comes to live music. Small venues, arenas, stadiums. Big artists, small artists, almost anybody worth seeing will have a gig here at some point. I grew up in a country where my favourite artists hardly ever visited back in the day. I’ve lived over twenty years in the UK, but I’m still in awe of the shere number of gigs to choose from. It is brilliant!

The filet marinated overnight in a mix of HP sauce, soy sauce and sweet chilli sauce. The file was in sous vide in 50 C for just over three hours and finalised on the coal BBQ. The end result was great if just a bit over cooked for what I was aiming for.

tasty end result

We’ve all seen the JSO protests in various events. I’d like to think a good number of people here agree with the point they are making while being uncomfortable about the way they make the point.

I for one would not run into the field in Twickenham in the middle of the final. There is no cause in the world that would make me run into a professional Rugby front row.

Putting that to one side, how would you protest to make people really stop and think without annoying them to a point where your message suffers.

The history of computers and software is full of nerdy and obscure jokes well beyond the caricatures of exiting vim. Complier compiler (explain that to most people!) to yet another compiler compiler to bison is one of those.

What are your favourite obscure computer nerd jokes?

We heard on the radio today about a somebody who’s named their dogs after rock stars. We’ve been at it too. We had Lzzy and Slash in aquarium and now we have dogs called Myles (Kennedy) and Ronnie (James Dio). How do you name your pets?

I heard today a hilarious story about a person trolling an ebay seller. The item was listed with a £10 target price, which the person thought was not going to be offered, so made an offer of £5. The seller replied with £7.50. Okey then, my offer is now £4.50. The item did not sell. The following week the item was listed again. The person offered £3.50. The item did jot sell. The following week the item was listed again. The person offered £2.50. The item did jot sell. At £1.50 the seller was becoming rather upset about this approach. What was the reply, you might ask. “See you next week.”

The wait was too long so it became Thursday BBQ instead. In my defence the weather was really nice this evening where we are. Chicken thighs and halloumi pepper skewers with a Mediterranean potato salad and a salad of various greens from the fridge.

Heinz bean getting a lot of free advertising lately.

Two types of kebab, tzatziki, humous, piyaz salad, ezme salad and turkish bread. All home made from fresh incredients.

Fresh out of the oven. My wife is a wizard in baking. For me its all just black magic. I’m not complaining, though!

If fresh chilli is part of your recipe, you really, and I mean really, want to go to the loo first and only then chop your chilli. After washing your hands thoroughly, of course. The other order is a bad idea. This advice applies definitely to males. I cannot comment whether the female experience is similar.
