I was absent the last two nights, but things are back to normal now; I will be there tonight. For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Late Autumn, a Japanese drama from the master himself, Yasujiro Ozu, which once again centers on a man played by Chishu Ryu trying to marry off his daughter, who is, once again, played by Setsuko Hara. Will she find true happiness and get away from her controlling family? I guess we’ll find out. Yes, Ozu did pretty much the same plot with the same actors about twelve times, even with similar titles (don’t confuse this with Late Spring [1949] or Early Summer [1951], both of which we previously watched), but hey, don’t mess with success. Considered one of his best films, and one of the greatest Japanese films of all time. It’s in color this time, though. Expect Chishu Ryu to go “mmmm” a lot.

After that is In the Loop (2009), a British satirical political comedy Director is Armando Ianucci, who is otherwise best-known for The Death of Stalin (2017). It is film adaptation of Ianucci’s TV series The Thick of It, but set in a different continuity, and requires no familiarity with the source material. The British Prime Minister’s spin doctor (Peter Capaldi), acting on behalf of the powers-that-be, seeks to rig a UN vote to start a war in the Middle East; an American general (James Gandolfini) and the British Secretary of State seek to stop him. But uh-oh, the Secretary ends up supporting the war on TV and wins a bunch of friends in Washington. Will he be able to use this influence to stop the war, or help it happen?

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we will be setting Nadia aside, as I will be absent again, as yesterday. Things should be back to normal tomorrow. So, here’s a double-feature to make up for it, with two of the most popular and acclaimed anime films of all time, both from the master himself, Hayao Miyazaki: Princess Mononoke (1997) and Castle in the Sky (1986), neither of which have ever been shown the ‘tube. Mononoke has a bunch of nature gods and pretty scenery and evil goop threatening animals. Castle in the Sky has a bunch of flying machines and steampunk and air pirates and glowing crystals. The two halves of Miyazaki, both represented. Someone please queue up the movies when the time comes; the links are at the bottom of this post.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:

Oddly, we have watched the first and fourth films before, but the second and third are new to the ‘tube. I will be absent tonight, so somebody please queue up the movies when the time comes. The links are at the bottom of this post.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is Close-Up (1990). It is a sort-of-crime-drama-quasi-documentary thing about a man arrested for impersonating a filmmaker, with the twist that not only is the film based on a true story, but all of the people involved in the case play themselves. A whole lot of meta-commentary on filmmaking and fourth-wall shenanigans follow from there. Director is renowned auteur Abbas Kiarostami, whose Where Is The Friend’s House? (1987) we previously watched. This is widely considered one of the best films of the 1990s; it is currently ranked #47 on Letterboxd’s Top 250 films of all time.

After that is The Fisher King (1991), a buddy comedy from Monty Python alumnus Terry Gilliam, director of Brazil (1985), which we previously watched. A radio shock jock (Jeff Bridges) feels guilty after his jokes cause someone to go on a real-life murder spree, falling into a spiral of depression, until he meets an eccentric homeless man (Robin Williams) who inspires him with his strange mannerisms and quick wit to go on a quest for the Holy Grail. Who knew Arthurian made such good therapy? Dudes are gonna rock.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Asterix & Obelix Take on Caesar (1999), a live-action adaptation of the famed French comic book series. A pair of superpowered Gauls get into a bunch of comical antics fighting the Romans, who have been unable to conquer the village that the wily protagonists defend. Hilarity ensues. Director is Claude Zini, who has made a whole career out of silly slapstick stuff; this is his best-known film. Its sequel, Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (2002), is better-regarded, but we should probably see the original film first. Big hit in France at the time.

Next is Last Action Hero (1993), a meta-action film from John McTiernan, the guy behind Predator (1987), Die Hard (1988), and The Hunt for Red October (1990). A boy obsessed with action movies is sucked into a film’s universe, whereupon he becomes the ward of over-the-top badass Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Uh-oh, the bad guy has escaped into the real; time to go get him. This bombed at the time, but has now accrued a cult following.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Medium Cool (1969), a political thriller about a news reporter (Robert Forster) covering the political violence around the 1968 Democratic National Convention. He finds himself personally involved when he discovers that his network has been feeding the FBI information about the impoverished minority neighborhoods in his reports, feeding the feds his footage to identify political dissidents. Drama ensues as the scoop’s moral dilemma escalates. This is the best-known and best-regarded film of ciematogrphar-turned-director Haskell Wexler; he is a one-hit wonder.

After that is 20th Century Girl (2019), a Korean romance set in 1999, centering on a girl who collects information about her best friend’s crush, only to find that, uh-oh, she’s falling for him too. How will this love triangle be resolved? Will anything get in the way? I guess we’ll find out. This is the only feature film to date from director Bang Woo-ri, and is the most popular Korean film on Letterboxd directed by a woman. Great reviews for this, so let’s give it a whirl.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we are beginning the classic Gainax series Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (1990), covering episodes 25 through 30. Join a rag-tag group of unlikely heroes on a steampunk adventure to find and save the lost city of Atlantis from an diabolical organization determined to rule the world. Stargate (1994) and Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) pretty much ripped this series off. Oh yeah, and did I mention that Hayao Miyazaki wrote it, and Hideaki Anno was involved, too?

After that is Ruben Brandt, Collector (2018), an English-language Hungarian animated feature about a psychotherapist who recruits his patients for art heists, becoming a wanted fugitive in the process. Can he dodge the cops and make a killing from his thievery? I guess we’ll find out. This is the only feature film to date of director Milorad Krstic. Its most remarked-upon aspect is its Picasso-esque modernist visual style, mixed in with surrealism. Looks pretty neat, and reviews are great, so let’s give it a whirl.

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972), a German lesbian romance from one of Germany’s most renowned filmmakers, Rainer Fassbinder. Somehow, we have not watched any of his work until now. It follows a rich, middle-aged, self-absorbed fashion designer (the eponymous Petra von Kant) who becomes infatuated with a much younger would-be model. Drama ensues as their relationship escalates and puts a strain on Petra’s career. Somehow, we have never watched any Fassbinder films until now; this is considered one of his best, so let’s check it out.

After that is How to Train Your Dragon (2025), the new live-action remake of Dreamwork’s 2010 animated feature about a Viking boy from a clan that seeks to exterminate all dragons. Uh-oh, he befriends a baby dragon himself, and has to keep his new interspecies friendship a secret from his disapproving father. Reviews for this assure me that it is better than the live-action Disney remakes. Director is Dean DeBlois, who also helmed the original version, as well as the original Lilo & Stitch (2002). Okay, reviewers, we’ll give this one a chance. A good-quality camrip just appeared, so we will be watching that.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is East of Eden (1955), an adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic brooding-youth novel of the same name. A young man (James Dean himself, in his breakout role) in 1910 Calfironia competes with his brother for the love of their father. Drama ensues as he navigates both his family difficulties and a budding romance, all while trying tore-connect with his mother. Director is Elia Kazan, whose A Face in the Crowd (1957) and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945) we previously watched. This is considered a classic, so let’s check it out.

After that is Kill (2023), an Indian action-thriller about a guy who boards a train to stop the arranged marriage of the woman he loves. Uh-oh, the train is filled with sadistic bad guys who want to do bad stuff. Time to kick a whole lot of butt. Blood and giblets will be flying everywhere as one dude rocks against an army of knife-wielding maniacs. This is the best-known and best-regarded work to date of director Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, who has not done anything else of note. Great reviews for this, so we’ll give it a whirl.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is The City of Lost Children (1995), a surreal French steampunk fantasy set in a strange world where a mad scientist kidnaps childrens to steal their dreams and thereby attain immortality. Director is Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who also did the aesthetically-similar Delicatessen (1991), which we previously watched. The top review on Letterboxd says “This is like playing Bioshock at Terry Gilliam’s house”. Sound neat; let’s watch.

Next is Kindergarten Cop (1990), a blockbuster featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger an undercover cop who has to track down a drug dealer at an elementary school. Hilarity ensues as he has to contend with a classroom full of little hellions while he tries to catch the bad guys. Director is Ivan Reitman of Ghostbusters (1984) fame, who has previously done another Arnold comedy vehicle, Twins (1988), which we watched awhile ago. This was a big hit at the time.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is The Lusty Men (1952). A cynical, washed-out rodeo guy (Robert Mitchum, playing his usual douchebag role) agrees to train a younger cowboy in the sport, despite knowing all the dangers, seeing him as an opportunity to vicariously reclaim his manhood. Drama ensues as the training escalates. Director is Nicholas Ray, whose Bigger than Life (1956) we watched two weeks ago; this deals with similar themes of toxic masculinity, but with rodeos instead of drugs. This is considered one of his best films, so let’s check it out.

After that is Love & Anarchy (1973), an Italian rom-com/thriller/political drama about a farmer in Fascist Italy who decides to hide from the authorities after they murder his friend. He takes up residence in a brothel and plots with an anarchist prostitute there to assassinate Il Duce himself, Benito Mussolini. Will they succeed? I hope so. Guess we’ll find out. Director is Lina Wertmuller, one of the few female directors in 1970s Italian cinema, and certainly the most famous; this is considered arguably her best work (the other contender being Seven Beauties [1976], which we have not yet watched), and an unusually feminist take on anti-fascist themes for its era.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we are beginning the classic Gainax series Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (1990), covering episodes 19 through 24.

After that is Lost in Starlight (2025), which Netflix advertises as their first-ever original Korean animated film. It centers on a pair of lovers in the near future who are torn apart when the lady, an astronaut, is selected to go on a mission to Mars. Will interplanetary travel keep our couple apart, or will they still be together? I guess we’ll find out. This is one of the few animated films directed by a woman, Han Ji-won, and is her most popular and best-reviewed work to date. A lot of comparisons to Makoto Shinkai’s work here, such as Your Name (2016) and Weathering with You (2019). Good reviews for this, so let’s give it a whirl.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:

Be there, comrades!
