To Monk, the voice is as flexible as the hands, possessing a unique character that can transcend landscapes, ages, and genders. Monk in Pieces explores her groundbreaking work and life, featuring performances like “Juice,” the first theatrical presentation held at the Guggenheim, as well as her celebrated “Dolmen Music.” The film also highlights influential artists inspired by Monk, including Björk, who famously covered Monk’s “Gotham Lullaby,” and David Byrne, whose own work was deeply shaped by Monk’s boundary-pushing approach—she’s featured in his 1986 film True Stories. Robert Kramer’s politics were as a radical as his approach to making films. A founder of the leftist Newsreel collective, he went on to direct documentaries and dramas, and films that blended both. Disgusted with the politics of the United States, he lived for decades in self-imposed exile in France.

Directed and narrated by Kramer’s longtime cinematographer and sometime producer, Richard Copans, LOOKING FOR ROBERT is a retrospective of Kramer’s work, and a love letter to a colleague and friend.
