(Old issue I didn’t deal with because sidetracked)

Hey I want to install Linux on an old outdated computer so I can use it, but a guide is asking me to verify the iso file and no matter the source I try the numbers don’t match.

This really held up what should be a simple process but I don’t want to install from a file that has potentially been altered.

What do pls?

Getting through things in chunks. The dishes are washed and the grotty ones are getting a bleach soak. If I can still smell bleach at all after rewashing them though that’s a tactical yeet.

I’ve got a bag of clothes for the op shop and one for a workwear charity. I’ve put them by the door and moved the unwanted tv there too. (If the built in dvd player doesn’t work it’s no use to me. Sell.)

Someone cancelled tomorrow so there’s some time to sweep.

I know preventative medication exists but never tried it

I got ideas if you need them, let me know if you have any dislikes or allergies and I’ll see what I can do. Potatoes go far.

Also please don’t hesitate to hit up food pantries or anything around, see if you’re eligible

Agreed Ensure gets old very quickly and Fortisip is even more intensely sugary. Vom. One way is to make a cup of coffee as usual and pour in a swig of Ensure as if it were a coffee creamer. It dilutes it to a more bearable level. Decaf coffee with vanilla Ensure probably tastes a little bit like a fancy Starbucks coffee.

Edit: They also do pudding/custard!

spoilerYou can heat milk in the microwave and add sugar (optional) and instant coffee for a ‘latte’ or use hot chocolate packets to get some fortified milk down. Sometimes this is easier than a meal and you can tailor it to her tastes. Hydration is probably a higher priority than food.

Another option is nibbles. An open pack of biscuits next to her with a cup of tea. Perhaps even a lollipop or a cracker would be enough to stimulate her appetite and get her through any overly-hungry aversion. If she likes ginger perhaps try some ginger sweets like ginger ale, ginger bears, Gin Gins or Chimes. If it’s nausea there are dissolvable wafer tablets like Ondansetron that might help. Even some peppermint tea.

Also is she just not hungry, is she forgetting to eat, is she feeling sick, is she fatigued or having motor issues so it’s not worth the effort, is she having trouble swallowing? Is the food and drink not sitting well?

I don’t mean to bring up anything undignified but sometimes after bowel surgery there can be issues with things like post surgery gastroparesis.

Also after a prolonged period of not eating or only liquids, beginning to eat again can be quite difficult and unpleasant. A period without eating (or being able to eat) in itself can cause atrophy of the digestive system and bring on gastroparesis. Cue effortful eating.

Surely the hospital has a dietitian and a gastro that might get on top of this.

Feeding tubes might be an option but are an incredible removal of autonomy and may be a lot of risk for the results. They’re not always recommended.

Edit: Also as you get older, with cancer, or at end of life you can lose your appetite. I’m very sorry. I’m hoping your mum perks up a little and more support can be worked out smoothly.

This.

I was in a very similar position except it wasn’t in my wheelhouse to make alternative arrangements.

Also I hope I’m not overstepping but I would really suggest some supports for you. Not kidding.

Caregiving (which is what you’re doing) can be incredibly difficult and it can have a severe lasting effect on your physical and mental health.

Particularly for informal care which doesn’t have built in protections, supports, or breaks for the person doing the care. Particularly if it’s someone you’re close to. Particularly if everyone else is stepping back and putting the onus on you to manage everything.

Don’t do this alone.

I’m sorry to hear :(

I wonder if some kind of home support package might come in a bit sooner. But also I know there are many things not in your control and post-release care isn’t always great

Apparently cats are attracted to bleach so it might be the chlorine smell

Melbcat has begun punishing me with farts.

Get up and disturb her by pulling the jacket corner she’s got trapped? Toot. Paying attention to vidya? She walks over the keyboard and crop dusts right under my nose.

She’s my cat alright

This seems like their failing, not yours.

Edit: The rules are changing for permanent residents - see article.

Temporary residents are allowed to keep using their overseas license.

Edit: Sorry, I was unclear on the message of the article and accidentally posted a misleading headline.

TL;DR: There are changes for permanent residents but temporary residents can keep using their overseas licenses.

Just as a reminder if you’re struggling.

Services like these can help with rent, financial advice, or no interest loans. Please avoid any predatory payday loan companies.

Edit: For the no interest loans I was thinking of Good Shepherd https://goodshep.org.au/services/nils/

Prices are always rising.

What have you found good for saving a dollar?

The leaves are falling... What are your plans over Autumn?

Trying to get my head around crop rotation.

It’s not traditionally used for pots I don’t think but I just can’t face the physical job of emptying and sterilising all the soil and pots or buying more potting mix after the tomatoes and zucchini are spent. (They got hit by black spot and powdery mildew despite the spraying.)

I’m willing to pull out and dispose of the spent diseased plants afterwards and maybe dig in some manure but am trying to avoid the physical labour of emptying the pots and thought of treating them more like a garden bed.

Maybe I’ll try just chucking a different fungal resistant plant in there afterwards. Perhaps it might be ok if I choose resistant hybrids. Beans and peas are recommended after tomatoes and zucchini to restore nitrogen but also get fungal diseases so I don’t know.

I could just be lazy and do a manure crop over autumn or winter.

The leaves are starting to fall. Is it Autumn already?

What do you have planned for your plants or garden?

Have you found a good bargain lately, made a repair, or figured out something that works for you?

This is also for any topic requests, suggestions, or tips that might not require their own thread.

I ended up learning how to do this and it worked well. Definitely practice first somewhere like a patch of your leg, upper lip, big toe, anywhere it doesn’t really matter about precision.

It’s much quicker than tweezing and can take off more than you intend so go slowly with short strokes and be very careful around arches. (I did my upper arches and between my eyebrows but left the bottom arches for when I get more confident.)

Do not do this for the first time before an important event!

I didn’t use any lotion but it still worked.

If your skin is sensitive it can get red bumps in the follicles afterwards. Keep everything as clean as possible during and after and perhaps use some Savlon.

I’m going to try doing this.

Transparency, it could cost more than 10 dollarydoos. I wanted something with UV resistant plastic to not crumble so I ordered a 60L outdoor bin ($15) and its lid ($6-ish) from Bunnings plus delivery.

You also need to have, buy or borrow a drill of some kind. And buy or have soil
