Interesting counterpoint to the stuff we sometimes talk about here. It's more for public chat rooms though. MLS (RFC 9240) still interests me and I've been wanting to try coding it.

Yea, I truly believe that's one of the biggest blockers.

We can fix a lot of things ourselves or just with time like, lack of content, engagement etc. but without a hard-line against the tankies like wide defederation of .ml (or at least just the big ones like .world) fixing the outside reputation is going to be a tall order. Even with PieFed

Thanks for your concern, but I'm perfectly relaxed, this is part of my documentation efforts.

People that see the world in black and white are dangerous. The bad, moms basement kind of dangerous.

Yup, that's tankies for ya

Unfortunately, PieFed just rolled out app API support, so there's not that many apps yet. It's mostly just been the web UI

But off the top of my head I believe Voyager is rolling out PieFed support, but iirc it's still in beta

I mean sure, except there is no automation lmao it's all done manually by human hands

I don't think it was on the support comm, but they did respond on a thread about it once on why they don't defed from them like they did the other 2.

It boiled down to 3 things: big comms, official Lemmy support comms and the fact the devs rolled out instance blocking tools

The 1st one, I'm hopefully solving with my cross-posting and calls for boycotting, the third one is by calling attention to the fact that it doesn't work as one would think. Pretty sure everyone thought block meant block when it was being discussed.

Lol, I already have

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:RFE/RL

Additional considerations apply to the use of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). RFE/RL should be used cautiously, if at all, for reporting published from the 1950s to the early 1970s, when RFE/RL had a documented relationship with the CIA.

RFE/RL may be biased in some subject areas (particularly through omission of relevant, countervailing facts), and in those areas, it should be attributed in the article body. There is no consensus as to what subject areas require attribution. The scope of topics requiring attribution of RFE/RL should be decided on a case-by-case basis.

It hasn't been true for some time now and is generally found to be credible and fairly unbiased and RFA is seen in even a more positive light:

Radio Free Asia can be generally considered a reliable source. In particularly geopolitically charged areas, attribution of its point of view and funding by the U.S. government may be appropriate. Per the result of a 2021 RfC, editors have established that there is little reason to think RFA demonstrates some systematic inaccuracy, unreliability, or level of government co-option that precludes its use.

And MBFC:

In contrast this is what RT looks like:

Radio Free [Region] is literally a mouthpiece of blatant western imperialist

Ok prove it then, surely something so widely known and "blatant" to be an outlet for misinformation would have numerous online, credible, sources with their evidence

[–] [email protected] -3 points 22 hours ago (8 children)

Radio Free [Region] is a perfectly credible news source that does a fair job of minimizing bias

In any case, bias != Mis/Disinformation. They're vastly different beasts. One just tries to subtly write things in a way that makes the reader favor their position the other is just straight lies and made up conspiracy theories to force a certain narrative among the populace

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm hoping that [email protected] will need to a rebirth of that sort lol

Instance blocks are nothing more than a comm mute, even if it worked as one would expect, it does nothing to stop them from spreading their toxic misinformation and propaganda to unknowing new users.

And downvoting to oblivion is not something to be relied upon, IME only obvious ones get downvoted like RT or ones with headlines like "UKRAINE WILL FAIL SOON SUPERIOR RUSSIA..."

Subtler disinformation, from lesser known sources, can still end up with positive upvotes and is just as dangerous

.world has not defederated from Lemmy.ml, I really wish they would, being the largest it would be of huge boost to the health of the Threadiverse

But the others are Hexbear and Lemmygrad (if you wanna see some of the things they say, check this thread out (viewed as a local post outside your client) https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/48132283)

They're definitely not Tankies, but I don't know of their politics beyond that...as it should be IMO for any project intended to be widely used
