'They told me to destroy' my backups, Fallout creator Tim Cain says: 'People high up at companies take authority but no responsibility' for game preservation

They (and all the sprites in the original Fallout) represent a milestone for the CRPG—and as far as Fallout co-creator Tim Cain knows, their source art assets might just be gone for good. "Those source art files were huge … they were backed up to DAT tape, but I don't know what happened to that DAT tape and it doesn't last that long. So, I think that source art is all gone." "I've lost stuff, and I think I take an active effort to keep a lot of things, so I can see why companies have lost stuff. "A few months ago, I did a video on game preservation," Cain said in his video. 🖊️️🤖

The Sims' latest patch has caused a pregnancy epidemic, even if they've never had 'woo-hoo'

The Sims 4's latest expansion, Enchanted By Nature, has stayed true-to-form by messing up unrelated parts of the game. The bug isn't affecting every player but is widespread, and looking into the various places Sims players discuss such things introduced me to an entire weird world of pregnancy questions. When Sims are being erroneously marked as pregnant they are, oddly enough, unable to take a pregnancy test. Vampires aren't allowed to feed off pregnant Sims, you see, so a world full of them is like a buffet under lock-and-key. The Sims team continues to work on "resolutions for pregnant Sims." 🖊️️🤖

Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Departure Led to Square’s “Collapse”, Series Composer Says

Final Fantasy series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi left Square back in 2003, and his departure impacted more than the popular role-playing game series, as Square reportedly "collapsed" after he left. As reported by Automaton, the creator of the Final Fantasy series recently spoke on the NOBIYO To Isshoni podcast hosted by longtime series composer Nobuo Uematsu about their time together at the Japanese publisher. At the time, Square did not have a proper corporate organization, Uematsu-san recalled during the show, but everybody listened to Sakaguchi-san, whom he described as a leader. Although Hironobu Sakaguchi left Square over 20 years ago, the legendary game developer recently collaborated with the publisher again on FANTASIAN: Neo Dimension, the PC and console port of the JRPG originally released on the Apple Arcade service a few years back. Sakaguchi-san's touch is unmistakable in the game, so much so that it feels like a proper entry in the Final Fantasy series, as I highlighted in my review. 🖊️️🤖

The Brief History of Motion Sensor Aiming in Video Games

In this mode, you can look around from Link's perspective, and motion aiming is back. Motion Aiming is used, but unlike Nintendo’s implementation of Motion Aiming in the Wii era and Ocarina of Time 3D, you can finally use the Right Stick to move the camera. Here comes the recycled paragraph…and it also heavily relies on Motion Controls due to the focus on 360-degree flight. It is playable without Motion Aiming and you can turn it off in the settings, but you practically need Motion Aiming for traversal. (ironically, Wii U Gamepad works better there than handhelds)Unlike Intu-Aiming (which uses ADS for Motion Aiming), Splatoon opts for "Always-On" Motion Aiming. 🖊️️🤖

Pushing Buttons: Is there even any point in making more powerful games consoles?

Last week, my favoured gaming news site, VGC, asked former US PlayStation boss Shawn Layden whether he thought the pursuit of more powerful consoles was still the way to go for the video games industry. I am the least technically minded games journalist I know, and have often felt as if I was in the minority. To me, games started looking pretty great about 15 years ago and most of the improvement I’ve seen since then has felt incremental. The chief technological innovation of the last 15 years in games has been VR, and that turned out to have niche appeal. Also, I hear the Guardian has a very good online games section – you should check it out some time. 🖊️️🤖

Classic JRPG Remake Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Confirms New Script That 'Honors the Original Japanese Text'

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter looks like a ridiculously cool remake based on everything we've seen of it so far — but some fans have long wondered whether the game will simply reuse the old localisation from when Trails in the Sky was originally brought overseas by publisher Xseed Games. As it turns out, 1st Chapter will feature a newly localised script, as per the official pre-order information from remake publisher GungHo Online Entertainment. The thing is, the old game's English script has, at times, been accused of being an inaccurate representation of the original Japanese writing. It's not what we'd call a popular complaint — we happen to think the Sky games have a largely charming localisation — but it'll be interesting to see how this reworked script compares. Indeed, GungHo specifically states: "Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter features a new localization, ensuring an authentic and engaging experience that honors the original Japanese text." 🖊️️🤖

Every Age of Empires Game Ranked, From Worst To Best

Age of Empires II: Age of Kings was the first game I have ever played on PC, so it’s no wonder this series has a special place in my heart. In this article, I’ll take a look at every Age of Empires game (Age of Mythology included), ranking them from worst to best, and exploring how each one contributed to the evolution of the series. What Age of Empires: Mobile truly is, is Return to Empire, a mobile game from 2020 with an Age of Empires II skin. Age of Empires III: Definitive EditionAge of Empires II was (and still is) a genre-defining game that surpassed every other RTS at the time it came out. Personally, I think that as soon as Age of Empires II came out, the original Age of Empires was immediately outdated in almost every aspect, bar one: it’s ancient setting and the civilizations it allowed you to take control of. 🖊️️🤖

How is GOG Galaxy Still Not On Linux?

If you do want that integrated all-in-one experience of a client, GOG does have its own client known as GOG Galaxy you can download to manage your games. There’s just one problem though, one problem that gives a lot of otherwise-interested Linux users some hesitation in fully switching over to buying their games on GOG. Try to see if you can spot it in this picture:That’s right, GOG Galaxy doesn’t support Linux. Obviously Windows is dominant, but what’s really telling is how there’s a larger share of Linux users than Mac users. And while you could argue Linux users do have other community-made clients available to them such as Lutris (which do support GOG games), these aren’t a full replacement. 🖊️️🤖

EA released meticulous remasters of the first two installments of Command & Conquer in 2020 , which included the release of those games' source code. 🖊️️🤖

Assassin’s Creed Shadows and the other new games out this week

The new game releases this week may look a little familiar, but all of them attempt to push their genres or series in new directions. Oh, and there’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows at the end of the week, with a story set in feudal Japan and a whole base-building system. But that will come after Pathologic 3, which starts the week off with another macabre story of death and decay. MLB The Show 25 promises a bunch of new additions to the series, including that roguelike board game mode. And if sports aren’t for you, Reignbreaker is a game that mixes medieval weaponry with a bit of cyberpunk.
