You might accidentally be killing hummingbirds

In the wild, hummingbirds, the smallest birds in the world, get their sugar from wildflowers, such as honeysuckle, lilies, and bee balm. Often red and plastic and filled with sugar water, hummingbird feeders provide a supplementary source of nectar for hummingbirds, especially during fall and spring migration when the birds are traveling long distances. “If you wouldn’t leave your drink sitting out in the sun for three days and then drink it, don’t do it for hummingbirds,” Furr said. Having a clean feeder can provide an additional food resource that can be important.”Level up your hummingbird supportDon’t want to bother with cleaning? The National Audubon Society has a tool that tells you what to plant in your region to attract hummingbirds. 🖊️️🤖

from Bun Alert System ([email protected]) lemmy

Omiltemi rabbit comes back to life after 120 years without a trace

A prime example is the Omiltemi cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus insonus), which recently reappeared in Mexico after staying out of official sight for over 120 years. “Just knowing that it had been 100 years, and no other scientist had seen a live [Omiltemi] rabbit is incredible,” said Almazán-Catalán. Adding to the confusion, the subtle physical differences between the Omiltemi rabbit and other common species led to years of misidentification. It turns out that the Omiltemi cottontail rabbit lacks the fluffy white tail that many associate with bunnies. Global project to find missing animalsThe rediscovery of the Omiltemi rabbit wasn’t just a local win – it was part of a broader mission. 🖊️️🤖

Young bats learn to be discriminating when listening for their next meal

The second “whine chuck” came from the túngara frog, a preferred prey species for these bats. Just as herpetologists can tell a frog species by its call, frog-eating bats can use these calls to identify the best meal. Grant MaslowskiWe considered whether the associations between sound and a delicious meal are an evolved specialty that bats are born with. They also responded more weakly than adults to the sounds of túngara frogs, a palatable, abundant prey that adult bats prefer. Thus it seems that juvenile bats must learn the associations between sounds and food over the course of their lives. 🖊️️🤖

Oops, we accidentally drugged the world’s fish

Then they monitored what the drug did to the fish as they migrated, as young salmon do, from a river out to the Baltic Sea. The clobazam fish also passed through obstacles along the way — two hydropower dams — at a faster clip. TroutFodder/Getty ImagesResearchers have also shown that male fish exposed to estrogen struggle to build nests and put on courtship displays for females. Rebecca ForsbergAs they discovered, the fish drugged with clobazam were more likely to make it to sea compared to those that were drug-free. Maybe it’s helping the fish recover from stress faster.”Outside experts I talked to mostly agree with his interpretation — that the clobazam likely made the fish less risk-averse. 🖊️️🤖

Ants perform life saving operations — the only animal other than humans known to do so

Florida carpenter ants identify limb wounds on their nestmates, then treat them with either cleaning or amputation. They are only the second animal in the world known to do this — along with humans. The scientists suggest ants only amputate femur injuries, rather than all leg injuries, because of speed limitations. 🖋️🤖

Scientists Finally Discover Why Some Cats Are Orange–and Why They Tend to Be Males

Two teams of scientists probing the genetic lineage of the orange coat in domesticated felines have found a mutation on the X chromosome. In most other mammals, mutations in a protein called Mc1r lead to red hair color, but not in cats. Instead, this decades-long mystery has been solved with the identification of the gene Arhgap36 that codes for a protein along the X chromosomes. 🖋️🤖

Bird flu is sweeping through zoos

These cases follow the deaths of 47 tigers, three lions, and a panther in zoos across South Vietnam over the summer. This instance gives us another wake-up call to the importance of HPAIV and its impacts on animals, and people,” said Bamford. Bird flu viruses can be passed among a wide variety of animals. In the US, it fully adapted to cattle, increasing the risk of human infections. Two indoor cats are suspected to have died in Los Angeles after drinking infected raw milk. In some regions, such as the UK and the EU, licensed bird flu vaccines can be used on captive zoo animals. In the US this is not allowed. 🖊️️🤖

Dog domestication happened many times, but most didn’t pan out

The dogs that share our homes today are the descendants of a single group of wolves that lived in Siberia about 23,000 years ago. But for thousands of years after that split, the line between wolf and dog wasn’t quite clear-cut. People living in what is now Alaska still spent time with a bizarre mix of dogs, wolves, dog-wolf hybrids, and even some coyotes. 🖋️🤖

I’m a neuroscientist who taught rats to drive − their joy suggests how anticipating fun can enrich human life

After we published our research, the story of driving rats went viral in the media. The rats also taught me something profound one morning during the pandemic. Had the rats always done this and I just hadn’t noticed? I had never seen this in my decades of working with rats. Neuroscientist Curt Richter also made the case for rats having hope. Lab rats frequently handled by humans swam for hours to days. Wild rats gave up after just a few minutes. It seemed that being rescued gave the rats hope and spurred them on. That’s a lesson my lab rats have taught me well. 🖊️

Moo Deng: The shrinking habitat of the world's most celebrated hippo

But in the wild, her species is quietly disappearing These charismatic animals have long been part of the culture and folklore of West Africa. And a story in Ivory Coast says that anyone who sees the tail of a pygmy hippo and laughs will go crazy. "There's nowhere else they can go," says Flacke. "Ivory Coast is probably the most well equipped for that," says Flacke. They know that the pygmy hippo is an iconic species, maybe a keystone species for the ecosystem. The pygmy hippo is also likely to have an important role in its local ecosystem. There are around 450 pygmy hippos in captivity across the world, says Flacke. While Moo Deng captures hearts across the globe, thousands like her are struggling. 🖊️

Air pollution makes it harder for bees to smell flowers

Pollution can disrupt insect attraction to plants. Pollution may have a surprising diversity of effects, from changing the scents that draw insects to flowers to warping the creatures' ability to smell, learn and remember. Around 75 percent of wild flowering plants and around 35 percent of food crops rely on animals to move pollen around. 🖋️

Death toll for birds hitting buildings may be over 1 billion a year in US – report

Less than half of stunned or injured birds survive a collision with a window. Research pushes up estimates that more than 1 billion birds may die each year from flying into buildings in the US. Deaths from building collisions increase in autumn during migration periods and then summer when breeding occurs. Scientists believe territorial behaviour in breeding season may contribute to rising collisions. 🖋️
