Crows

There is this little crow at Piazetta Savoia in Cagliari who left its nest a bit early two weeks ago. The staff of the surrounding gastronomy fed it and now it is absolutely not scared of people and hangs around there. Doing all kinds of dorky baby crow stuff. Really crazy to see, never seen this before. It made me jump just now, as it nibbled on my sandals as I am writing this.

I passed by here earlier in the morning and was glad to not see it here, so it does seem to have a bit of a life outside of the Piazetta.

I am no crow expert, but I know that it quite often happens that crows leave their nest too early and then keep sitting on the ground. That does not mean the parents don't care for it anymore, but they may still be feeding it. So I would not just pick up a sitting baby crow before observing if the parents are still there for it. It could take a couple hours though.

One of my neighbors keeps a duck in his yard that I hear when taking a walk. This rooftop crow was making a particular call nearby in alteration with the duck (barely audible in this video). I've not heard these short frequent caws from a crow before, so it definitely seems like he's intentionally imitating the duck.

Saw some crows heckle this peregrine falcon yesterday evening. Went on for like 10 minutes. Unluckily i did not hit the record button for the better clip i thought i was recording. I don't know what was up with the falcon, if it was hurt or a confused young bird. I was contemplating calling some wild bird help, but it disappeared somehow behind the roof, along with the crows, did not really see it fly.

This is the tail end of a crow fight. Two crows were on the ground in a tussle and the others showed up. Eventually the crow'd flew away.

We left snacks for the local crows!
