Normal people: It's because the US global hegemony is declining and we're transitioning to a multipolar world. This leads to problems in internal and foreign politics. The ruling class noticed the downturn long ago so in order to shield themselves from civil unrest they're militarizing the police, banning protests, taking control of social media, and so on.
