RBG wrote a dissent to a supreme court decision that struck down DC's gun control laws. A few days later she had a dinner party with friends, including Antonin Scalia, who wrote that decision. The dinner party is hosted by her friend and long time SCOTUS journalist Nina Totenberg.

Totenberg’s husband, a surgeon who has operated on hundreds of gunshot victims, adorns every guest’s soup bowl with a plastic squirt gun. Everyone laughs and laughs.

In New Hampshire a new law has started allowing parents to put their kids in private schools and keep the public funding. In my tiny town we have a private Christian school newly created for the purpose of taking this money. Each kid that leaves our public school costs the community money because you can't fire 1/20th of a teacher or close 1/400th of a school.

Our schools were already poorly funded because of New Hampshires stupid fucking tax system. There is no income tax and no statewide funding of education, all of the funding is local. The poorest towns pay the most to educate each student for the obvious reason that poverty causes a lot of problems for kids. We also have the lowest property values. This means our town, the poorest in the state pays 10 times the tax rate that the richest community pays, and ends up with the worst schools.

Did they call up the monkey store and order a batch of expired monkeys? Or did they buy a ton and wait for some to become terminally ill?

I agree with you. It would be different if contact sports were only played by consenting adults who weren't economically coerced into playing. Professional contact sports drive the interest in high school sports where children are getting traumatic brain injuries to entertain a bunch of adults.

High school hockey is big where I live and it's crazy how violent it is. The size difference between players is more pronounced than it is in the NHL, so you have kids getting checked by someone a foot taller and 70 pounds heavier.

Kids getting permanent brain injuries so their fathers can relive their glory days.

The only baseball I like is Tommy Lasorda being tormented by Youppi, the Expos mascot:

Charles Barkley did 9/11 as a distraction because Michael Jordan was making his big NBA comeback on 9/11/01.

It's really infuriating that so much of a person's success in getting a job is based on their ability to bullshit.

Years ago I got a job as a hospital janitor. I had to take a personality exam and then do an hour long interview. The interview was all open ended questions like, "What's the biggest professional challenge you've experienced, and how did you overcome it?" and "Tell me about a time when a coworker was angry and how you dealt with it".

I don't see how your ability to answer such questions tells them anything about your capability to empty trash cans and mop up piss. It felt like a process designed by an HR person to justify their job.

There was a republican DA running on a platform of not doing plea bargains on the theory that plea bargains are soft on crime.

I would have voted for her if I didn't know that she would give up on that plan the minute she had to start dismissing cases because they couldn't handle the case load.

Plea bargains are punishment for exercising your right to a trial.

The only thing touchscreens in cars are good for is options menus you aren't allowed to use while driving.

My car has a bunch of settings that you wouldn't be able to use without adding some kind of input device like a scroll wheel or touchscreen(or I suppose you could add 20 separate buttons).

Options like configuring how long the headlights stay on after you shut off the car, or configuring how the auto lock function works, changing the equalizer settings, etc. Touchscreen really is the best for this kind of stuff because it's what people are used to using.

Neither of those points make sense. The label didn't say, "This chip might kill you".

Nor is there evidence that the guy ate the equivalent of 3 bottles of whiskey in hot chips. The story I read implied he ate one chip, which is the amount the manufacturer intended you to eat, since they come in packages of one.
