I have a printer, and know where the power cord is! I even have it paired to my wifi and use it to scan stuff. Don't ask me to print anything, I can't afford the ink.

They'll also become Air BnB's! I'd say some other solutions are to ban Air BnB. Everybody moves out of tourist areas leaving a ghost town with no restaurants, shops, or nightlife for the tourists. Or, decrease the global population until there is no housing crisis with the Thanos glove thing. Snap, snap, snap.

Right? I'll talk about my salary all you want. I think it's great to know where you stand against others when negotiating for a new job or a raise. Especially since unions aren't really a thing in my profession.

Don't talk about my penis. If I want you to know, you'll know.

I don't have time to mess around with Arch or customizing things. I tried a couple live boots and went with Mint. Spent 2 hours picking a theme, wallpaper, and menu icon. Boom, done.

The whole damn country is built on spite. Screw your taxes, I'll make my own! I'll make my own country, with blackjack! And hookers! Royal Crown soda? Spite. The price of Coca-Cola syrup went up. I actually kind of love that, though. Necessity may be the mother of invention, but I'd say spite is the deadz-beat dad.

Now, I think anti-intellectualism also stems from this spite complex. Do your own research! Don't believe anything actual scientists say. In fact, do exactly the opposite. Don't get vaccines. Roll coal. Become a sovereign citizen and end up right back where we started, refuse to pay taxes.

I'm so glad somebody agrees. That's exactly what he is, and why I cannot respect him or his opinions. He is a self-proclaimed propagandist.

And you were called a right-wing troll. Is it hard to believe there are people on the left that don't like Hasan? I guess you didn't specify if you are or not, but I can at least speak certainly about myself. That other person said I should listen to what Hasan has to say, and it just really reminded me of what my mom would say about Rush Limbaugh. It's the exact same thing, just a different flavor of bullshit.

Meh, idk. Her makeup and hair well done, she's clearly curating the look she wants. She seems happy and kind, so I'm speculating she has fulfillment in her life. So, I'm going to disagree.

I'd say "justfuckmyshitup" is bad execution of things, not just things outside of societal norms. Like this bad boy right here.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Well, I'm afraid we'll just have to disagree and leave it at that. I guess I just wanted to express that I wasn't just coming from a place of "hurr durr Bernie good."

  1. I don't respect him, or his takes.

  2. Not a fan of Bernie, either. Definitely not a fan of Isreal. I'm trying to think of any political commentators or politicians or activists I don't dislike, and all I have are AOC and Gretchen Whitmer. And I think Greta.

Bonus opinion, I don't think there should be any violence from the protesters. Regardless of what the police or national guard do. Arrests, tear gas, rubber bullets, just take it. Don't throw things, don't loot, no masks, just take it. A protest is serious business, and I think you should be willing to accept any consequences from it if you really support the cause you're fighting for, whether it is imprisonment, injury, or death. If you aren't, don't protest. Everybody remembers MLK being arrested. Everybody remembers Tank Man from Tiananmen Square. Everybody remembers Rosa Parks. Hopefully, everybody remembers Rachel Corrie. Their acts were so impactful because of the stark contrast between their peaceful non-violence and the response to them.

If there is any property damage done, let it be by the cops. Deep down, I believe most people are materialistic and somewhat selfish. If their car gets torched during a protest by protesters, they're probably going to get pissed at the protesters! You want the support of the masses. Of businesses. If you're a shop owner, and your windows get blown out by teargas and rubber bullets, you're probably going to be way more pissed at the cops than the polite people just gathered in the street.

From the outside, to the centrists and the old people who still watch the news, a quiet (but huge) group of people getting pelted with tear gas and rubber bullets is so much more sympathetic than (hypothetically) some person in a mask chucking rocks at the police, waving a foreign flag. Again, sympathetic to people less left leaning. In my opinion.

Conversely, if someone thinks violence is the answer, I don't think that's a protest. That's a fight. A revolution. And that energy should be directed, planned. Not just riot style destruction.

That's all I've got, peace.

We're upvoting Hasan stuff? That's what we've come to? Bernie didn't even say anything wrong.

I saw the movie in high school, when it came out on VHS, and I loved it. I bought the book, and couldn't put it down. It was perhaps my favorite piece of sci-fi for a while. I thought John Travolta was delightfully hammy, and that the movie was extremely quotable and fun.

A coworker of mine were just talking about musicals this morning, and my strong dislike of Hamilton. For some reason, it popped into my head that I would love a musical of Battlefield Earth, and John Travolta should sing in it. This sentiment was not shared by my coworker. So, yeah, that's it.

The TI-86 is my absolute favorite calculator. I find it a pleasure to program for, I love the custom menu buttons, and I love the screen compared to that of the 83/84. I love the design, the uniform buttons and dark color scheme look very professional. This is my second one, after the screen died in my original baby that got me through high school and college. Which leads me to another thing I love about it, they are dirt cheap on eBay. Most are under $20.

Back in my college days, I saw somebody online had modded theirs with the frontlight from a GBA SP. The AGS-001, not the AGS-101. That was brilliant. I did a ton of calculator programming and math in low-light conditions at the time. Lounges in the dorms, during lectures. A calculator with a lit screen would have been awesome. I know all three major brands have options like that now, but it was pretty novel at the time. I think the only one out with a backlight was the Casio 9860 Slim, which was quite pricey. Unfortunately, even a broken GBA was outside of my broke college budget, and those tri-wing screwdrivers were not common yet. So, the dream faded.

Until, for some reason, a couple weeks ago. I do not know why it popped back into my head, and I could not find the source of the mod again for the life of me. But I knew I had to do it. And these days, you can get aftermarket GBA parts super easy and cheap. I still had my old 86, and I took it apart for proof of concept work. I tried every single test point for something that just turned on and off with the calculator, and could not find a single thing. Well, at least not anything without a signal from it. So, I resigned to just using a switch. Which I remember is what the original mod also did. I hid it in the battery compartment. It works fantastic. I wish I did this 20 years ago. There are a few specks of dust on it, and the frontlight makes them hugely visible. I'm going to get them off, but I'm out of Rodico at the moment. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

Or is there a way to set a resolution as a default for specific displays?

I have 3 monitors in my setup. Two are on a KVM, and one is always on my Mint PC. That monitor is an old XP era Dell. But it isn't hooked up with DVI, instead I have it connected via HDMI to an audio extractor to the Dell speakers, then HDMI to DVI. It works great. Except when I hit the KVM switch, and for some reason the resolution on the Dell changes from 1280x1024 to 1920x1080, which is unsupported.

How the heck do I get 1280x1024 to be persistent?

I was on a kick for a while of watching restoration videos. These days, I know a lot of them are faked, but I was still inspired to do something myself. This watch was put together largely with stuff from my junk parts.

When I was getting started in watch modding, I ordered some frankenwatches from India off eBay. They were super cheap, usually like $7 or $8. And they never worked. They were a hodge podge of different movements, different cases. Crystals that were ground to fit with no gaskets. Just all-around junk. And so they just littered the bottom of my watch tool box. But I always liked the size and shape of some of those old Seiko 5's, and wanted to fix one up after watching some resto vids. Here's our candidate.

It's an old busted 6309, with petrified gaskets, no crown tube, and a cheap, flat plastic crystal. Look at the state of this case.

This was pretty bad. It's actually lucky the crown tube was missing already, it made sanding and polishing easier. Not shown was me taking a spare 7S26 movement, and sanding the movement spacer down to fit in this case. There was a lot of sanding and polishing involved in this build.

The next issue I ran into was that the old Seiko 5's had actual 4 o'clock crowns. This 7S26 is for what is commonly called the 3:18 crown. The difference is that you need different date wheels between 3:00 and 4:00. But 3:00 and 3:18 can use the same. The 6309 date wheel doesn't fit the 7S26. I tried. So, no date window for us.

This particular flavor of the 5 has 19mm lugs. Which makes finding straps and bracelets challenging. This is the best, least expensive one I could find. I had to grind the end links to fit the curvature of the case.

Esslinger had the crown tube, crown gasket, caseback gasket, and crystal gasket I needed. Miraculously, I had a flat mineral crystal for it. I think it came from an SNK809.

And, here's the finished watch. The caseback is completely wrong for this case, but it still fit. I didn't have to grind the 7S26 rotor or anything. I polished the beveled portion, and put a brushed finish on the flat. The dial and hands are from Ajuicet, his stuff is great. I did have to snip off the dial legs and just adhere the dial to the movement spacer due to the 4:00 crown.

So, this is a watch I posted in my previous life at the other place. Forgive me for recycling. Also, I'm not re-uploading all these pictures, so excuse the imgur.

If you're not familiar, the Invicta Pro Diver 8926OB is a Rolex Submariner "homage." But it is one that has good bones for modding, and can usually be found pretty cheap. I got this one for under $70 on sale. It has a stainless case, decent bracelet, and a Seiko NH35A movement. For which, there are a lot of aftermarket parts. The pic below is not mine.

The click spring bezel feels cheap. The hands and dial look cheap. The lume is terrible. But we are going to fix all of that. Let's start by popping off that bezel.

I replaced it with this lovely coin edge one from Dave Murphy, that he makes just for this watch.

In that bezel, I installed this insert from Raffles Time. It's inspired by Sean Connery's Rolex from Goldfinger. Raffles makes great parts for Seikos and Vostok.

Next, the crown guards have to go. They're too modern looking for this mod. I just had to push the crown tube out, no heat or anything. If I bought this watch just to use, that crown tube would have become loose and just spun when I would screw the crown down. Very disappointed in the QC there.

I sanded and polished the case back up after grinding, and pushed the tube back in with some red Loc-tite. It isn't coming out ever again.

Last up for the case is choosing the crystal. This case is designed for a flat, mineral glass crystal and I wanted a vintage looking high-dome acrylic. I'm pretty sure I left the crystal gasket in for that reason, but don't quote me. Here are three different height acrylic crystals by Stella. I went with the middle.

The California dial and cathedral hands are from Yobokies, a staple in the Seiko modding community. I didn't take any pictures of swapping the hands and dial, sorry. And there we have it, all done!

Mercer was a microbrand that, sadly, didn't make it through the pandemic. But you can still get watches very much like this, because at its core the Lexington is a standard Seagull ST19 chronograph.

I really wanted an ST19, because I just find the history of that movement fascinating. And I just happened to like the color options, strap, and price of Mercer. The Detroit Mint Cobra is very close to the Lexington, and I'd look at that if you're interested. The movement is (in my opinion) beautiful. It isn't finished as well as a Swiss movement, for sure. But just look at the blued screws. The visible pinion jewels. The column wheel. And since it's hand-wound, there's no rotor to obstruct the view. I love it.

The Lexington came in a lovely box, but I must say it is super annoying that the owner's manual didn't fit in it. It's still a much nicer box than a watch this inexpensive deserves.

So, everybody go get an ST19. They're fun, inexpensive, and cool to look at. Then, post pics here. I only have so many watches.

My wife and I were just at The Melting Pot, and of course you need a chronograph to time your meats. The watch isn't the view, My wife is. We work from home a lot, and don't go out without our kid too often. And even less often do we get dressed up to go out. I think the last time we did may have been to see Cyndi Lauper last October. It's so nice to and give our full attention to each other and appreciate that we are still a loving couple.

But nobody cares about that. So, here's the watch. It's a Breitling Top Time, with the Breitling 01 movement. The Top Time line takes a lot of inspiration from automobile and motorbike racing. This one is the Ford Thunderbird edition. I got it on the polished stainless mesh bracelet, but it is currently on a red goat leather rally strap. It's a 41mm case, but it doesn't feel that much bigger than my Monaco, probably because that case is square and wears larger than its 39mm. You can't see in this lighting, but it has blue AR coating on its gorgeous double-dome sapphire crystal.

Wearing my 50th anniversary Gulf Racing Monaco today, I had several dishes to time for dinner. I saw this at the AD the day after they put it out. I thought about it overnight, and came back. Somebody else was trying on MY watch! Well, he put it down and HE left to think about it. I snatched it right up. I love this watch. I actually like that it's a Calibre 11 movement instead of the new in-house movement. And off-the-shelf movement with a Dubois Depraz chrono module is more authentic to the original Monaco. The Gulf Racing colors match mu company colors perfectly, and I always wear it on days when I wear a company shirt. It also goes well with my vintage TI calculators.

I really don't know why. I don't take that many notes. When I'm in meetings, I've been telling people I color code my notes. But honestly, I have just been switching pens at random.. I'm never going to use all this ink before they dry up, and it's going to be a pain to clean them all. Normally, I'll only have one or two inked at a time.

It took probably 10 hours of troubleshooting going off his troubleshooting guide. There was a tiny short i couldn't even see through my jewelers loupe, but measurements said it was there. So, I scraped between a couple pins with my smallest tweezers, and boom. Done.

Then, after I finished, I discovered there is a newer and better version of this mod, the iFlash2PS2. The IDE Resurrector only supports up to 128GB cards. The iFlash can handle up to 1TB. And it looks like slightly less soldering. So, learn from me. Do the iFlash.

I'm assuming you all know about FMCB, and how to rip your discs to ISO files. If you don't, this is a great way to save your console that won't read discs anymore, like this one I picked up in an "as-is" bin super cheap at a used game store. I'd look up Tito from Macho Nacho's PS2 mod videos.

Here's a pic of my terrible wiring. Yes, that's from a CAT5 cable. The wire is ordered for this mod wasn't small enough and I was too impatient to wait for more. It's very ugly, but it works. You're going to want 30ga to do this right. CAT5 is 24ga, and it barely, barely fits. Honestly, if i get ambitious I might rewire it later. The SD slot wiring is way easier than the board soldering. You can't see it of course, but I know it's there. And I'll have to see it again when I eventually install a Retrogem.

I have a toddler that's starting to get into Disney, so I've been expanding my collection. Last week, I got the Masterpiece Lion King boxed set. I already have a lot (probably a dozen) Disney Home Video CLV discs, I think I'm going to try to get the CAV releases instead.

I got this when he sold his house to move to an assisted living facility. It's just been sitting in my garage for a couple years. Busy with the kid and all that. Well, we just got a little child trailer, and I didn't want to pull it with my mountain bike so figured it would be a good time to clean this guy up. New tires and tubes. Cleaned and lubed. Waxed. I thought it was trying hard to look like an old Schwinn, so I thought some nice shiny fenders would help out with that.

I have so many memories of going on rides with him, and of him taking it camping. I always thought it was a nice looking bike. I'll have to show him a picture of it all cleaned up next time I see him, I don't think he's ridden it in at least a decade.

Next on the agenda is new brake pads, and some retro lights. Any other suggestions? Maybe a white saddle seat, or different handlebars? I'm pretty sure its only value is sentimental, so the best suggestions are cheap suggestions. Thanks!
