It's hard for me to understand the mentality that leads to something like this. Based on what we know, I'm assuming the CEO/CFO/who-the-fuck-ever saw they had burned through their cash, but thought, "Wait, we can turn this around! We just need a little more time! Oh, well, the talents mostly rely on their streaming revenue, so they won't complain too much if we 'borrow' their other income for a little while to make payroll. Oh, and this charity money. And those freelance artists will keep their mouths shut if they know what's good for them." But clearly, if shit got this bad, there was no universe in which they could have turned it around—they were just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. So instead of just throwing in the towel and moving forward with bankruptcy or whatever, they committed a bunch of felonies and ended up in the same place anyway. I guess the same hubris that leads someone to go venture capital and be like, "Yeah, you give me millions of dollars and I'm going to make you hundreds of millions of dollars with the flimsiest business plan in the world" is the same kind of hubris that leads you to commit brazen financial crimes (see: Elizabeth Holmes (Theranos), Sam Bankman-Fried (FTX), Adam Neumann (WeWork) et al.).

Oh yeah, she (and the rest of the talent, save perhaps the debuted-under-VShojo Nova) will be fine financially. It just shows just how dire things are for the company, and that's it's been going on for over a year—she mentioned that even before the payments completely stopped, they were coming very late.

Folks, they're calling it the most efficient system we've ever seen!

VTuber postingHoly shit, Kson is saying VShojo hasn't paid her since last Septmber. Fucking wild. (Worth remembering that this presumably wouldn't include core streaming income, which is why she would have been able to last this long) She was preparing to leave this month already, and she doesn't expect to be paid (which, yeah, if they've been this financially fucked for this long...probably not wrong).

I had no idea that was the original meaning! Kinda wild that such a visceral word gets tossed around so casually now.

I'd like to be added to the taglist, please doggirl-happy

I'm so used to seeing the "Brazil mentioned" edit of this that it took my brain a second to process it

VTuber postingWelp, VShojo is donezo.

I was never under the illusion that VShojo was a charity—they received $11 million in seed funding, so like any startup you expect some shit to go down eventually when the investors start looking for their return. But damn, stealing from an actual charity is beyond the pale, and just plain boneheaded in an industry where trust is everything. To me, it reeks of desperation. Were they so strapped for cash that they were stealing from their most prominent talent to pay staff or cook the books for investors? Maybe we'll find out if this goes to trial, but it's hard to see that happening, especially with Ironmouse trying to stay anonymous at all costs.

Unlike Nijisanji, who has a JP branch that was (to my knowledge) largely unaffected by EN's scandal and has way more cash to be able to weather a storm (their stock price is now 25% higher than it was before the Selen incident), I don't really see how VShojo can survive this. The well-established talent will be okay (well, what remains of them after four high profile departures in recent months), and I expect we'll see them heading for the exit, but I feel awful for the Nova girls who are fresh debuts just hitting their stride. That said, Mel might be an exception—we all know how shit payment processors are to anyone who does adult content, so I imagine having a corporate intermediary was especially helpful for her, doubly so when she's just moved halfway across the world to Japan.

edit: holy shit, I missed that Froot tweeted that she was coming back to streaming after an eight-month absence...just over two hours before Mousey dropped the bomb. Oof. :donald-glover-pizza-fire: (edit: she tweeted the GIF out lol)

edit 3: lots of people on Twitter who have done work for VShojo saying that they have been stiffed or had payments come months late over the past year...definitely sounds like major liquidity issues. Not surprising, if you think about it. They started with $11 million of seed money, but where's the growth? They more or less tread water, losing big talents, gaining some, then losing some again. Their main revenue streams (according to the talents) were supposedly that they got a percentage of merch and a percentage of sponsorships that VShojo negotiated for the talents. But from what the talents have said from way before this, a lot of them handle much of both on their own or through separate merch companies and separate talent agencies (e.g. Mouse/Zen via UTA), so...where's the revenue coming from that's gonna pay for managers, legal, tech, and the large amount of resources for debuting an entire gen of 4 new VTubers? Doesn't add up.

The traditional JP companies take huge chunks of core streamer activity revenue (superchats, subscriptions, merch, sponsorships) PLUS a slew of additional revenue streams (video games, large company-wide endorsement deals, major record label contracts, tons of PPV concerts, etc.). VShojo did a PPV concert once, but that was nearly two years ago, so it either wasn't profitable or they couldn't figure out how to produce them at scale. And there have been larger sponsorship deals here and there, but they've been few and far between. Makes you wonder what the hell their growth plan was.

edit 4: I'll probably make a separate post if and when more info becomes available (perhaps from Kson's stream scheduled in 8 hours), but ending on a positive note: Nimi's getting married!
