Some are designed to scare teenagers away. (Or annoy them to the point of leaving) I wonder If these devices sweep a range in order to maximize efficacy

Sometimes context is important to the conversation- Your back yard isn't other people's problem- letting your animal shit on someone else's front yard and leave it there is this particular case.
