Too simple to be useful in real life: a mere 8 by 8 grid, no fog of war, no technology tree, no random map or spawn position, only 2 players, both sides exact same pieces, etc.

Because lichess is open source and maintained by volunteers.
it's a for-profit website that tries to do everything it can to get you to subscribe to a premium service (certainly sells your data too) whereas lichess has everything free and open forever
honestly i think half the chess.com evaluation is in their domain. i mean how much did they pay to secure that?
