Too simple to be useful in real life: a mere 8 by 8 grid, no fog of war, no technology tree, no random map or spawn position, only 2 players, both sides exact same pieces, etc.

Polytopia addresses these limitations.

Lemme find that substack article that breaks down how psychologically revealing this statement was

edit: here it is

honestly if he wasn't evil and rich, his childlike conviction that his favorite video game is the Greatest Game Objectively would be charming. Like that's how I thought when I was 10 years old.

Fucking hell, I thought this was a joke.

That was a cathartic read

chess.com mentioned doggirl-growl

if you like chess you should only use lichess.org btw

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

i have not followed chess drama for sometime. i agree but why are we hating chess.com again?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

Because lichess is open source and maintained by volunteers.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

it's a for-profit website that tries to do everything it can to get you to subscribe to a premium service (certainly sells your data too) whereas lichess has everything free and open forever

honestly i think half the chess.com evaluation is in their domain. i mean how much did they pay to secure that?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

an eye watering sum presumably lol

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

that's a low bar for me honestly, anything above 50 dollars is eye watering in this economy

https://www.chess.com/blog/erik/how-i-got-the-chess-com-domain-name

TL;DR - I got the Chess.com domain name out of bankruptcy for $55,000 in 2005

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

yep my eyes are watering alright. but it must be worth a lot more nowadays i image it would be easily x10 or more.

He's mentioned that he watches Hasan occasionally

He won another game and got to 3401. But then he lost and dropped 14 points to 3387. He only gets one point for a win so I doubt he'll get to 3402 today. But soon? Who knows. He's a beast.

Edit

He got back to 3401. Damn.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago
