were people unaware that Goodwill & the Salvation Army are actually trash?? if you need actual help, you're probably better off seeking like a Habitat for Humanity store or something (and even those suck according to what I've heard from some people who stayed/worked at my local one!!)

never look up how the salvation army treats transwomen πŸ’€

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 week ago

Trans women, addicts, the homeless, name any at risk group and the salvation shits on them. I heard some horror stories in rehab about them.

goodwill is where people go to thrift shop for cheap work clothes, rando shit like an Outsiders cassingle for your friends 1992 Jeep Cherokee, and the occasional retro fashion item if you are lucky as fuck.

I've only ever heard awful things about how they treat staff and seek out disabled people to hire so they can underpay/exploit them. they are intensely extractive to the communities they operate in.

they auction anything of real value and dump the rest in Africa to destroy local economies, they were always profit seeking like any other business

They’ve always came across as a thrift store disguised as a charity so they can just take free shit and put a price tag on it.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 week ago

That's exactly what they do. They are a retail store for used goods. They are not a charity. They were caught underpaying disabled employees. So not only do they get their inventory for free, they exploit disabled workers outside of the usual exploitation.

Okay so they suck just like the salvation army.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 1 week ago

Yeah, they're about as shitty as any other retailer. I'll purchase from them for a deal, but all my donations go to domestic violence shelters and the like.

Steal from goodwill.

If you find anything worth stealing anyway.

They put all the good stuff on their auction website that ends up selling for way more than thrift store prices

I used to shoplift clothes from goodwill all the time when I was a young 20something. Mainly because of their shitty "values" and the way they means test all of their "help". Also, I was walking to work and had no extra money for anything so the clothes were a necessity.

One time I put on like 7 pairs of pants in the changing room and just walked out. There's no way I didn't look like a cartoon character walking out.

I'd like to imagine it started with a pair of jeggings and got progressively baggier to some JNCOs or something lol

Close. I used to love those old man corduroys so several pairs of those went on and then I finished the whole thing off with some lima bean green hammer pants

[Verse 2] And the starvation army they play And they sing and they clap and they pray Till they get all your coin on the drum Then they tell you when you are on the bum

[Chorus] You will eat (You will eat) bye and bye (Bye and bye) In that glorious land above the sky (Way up high) Work and pray (Work and pray), live on hay (Live on hay) You'll get pie in the sky when you die (That's a lie!)

i have a legit community thrift shop very near my house. goodwill further into town.

once i discovered the thrift shop i pretend goodwill no longer exists. sucks because the community closet/thrift is really hidden from the main road i was here years before i learned about it's existance

fuck goodwill. and i've been hoping if my hours at work ever ease up or i get fired or something to try to volunteer at the actual thrift shop since i have so much retail exp. seems like a good place to get a foot in the door for local mutual aid

Did anyone think that they are a charity or something?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago

Tbf they are quite literally a non profit and a charity

I know the amount of Goodwill's in the USA make it really easy to go to their drive thru and easily drop off your old stuff, but I recommend going the extra mile and looking up a better charity farther away.

It takes us twice as long, but my partner and I recently switched to a super gay thrift that also does free STD testing and we have no regrets.
