WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Saturday ripped into Walmart, saying on social media that the retail giant should eat the additional costs created by his tariffs.

As Trump has jacked up import taxes, he has tried to assure a skeptical public that foreign producers would pay for those taxes and that retailers and automakers would absorb the additional expenses. Most economic analyses are deeply skeptical of those claims and have warned that the trade penalties would worsen inflation. Walmart warned on Thursday that everything from bananas to children’s car seats could increase in price.

Trump, in his Truth Social post, lashed out at the retailer, which employs 1.6 million people in the United States. He said the company, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, should sacrifice its profits for the sake of his economic agenda that he says will eventually lead to more domestic jobs in manufacturing.

I’m starting to understand how this fool bankrupted a casino.

Hey! Whoa! That's NOT true!!! He didn't bankrupt a casino! That's just foolish to think that!!!

......he bankrupted THREE casinos! Get it right!

Thought the exporting country pays the tariffs?! Lmao. Everyone who voted for this idiot!

[–] [email protected] 49 points 1 month ago

Wait. He's telling a capitalist to just make less money? Wow, he's got balls to think he'll win this.

I thought China was paying the tariffs? Is it Walmart now?

donvict still doesn't understand how capitalism works. he 'makes' all his money with lies and cheats and grifts, not good ol' fashioned capitalism and exploiting of the working class and poor. the only ones who are gonna be 'paying' the tariffs are those at the end of the distribution chain--the consumers.

If foreign producers are paying, why would US retailers and automakers have to pay any extra?

It’s almost like Little t has no idea how anything works.

Don't think for a moment this is because Trump doesn't understand how tariffs work. This is a threat to the Walton's that they haven't yet given him enough money. Make a "donation" or two, and Walmart will suddenly be exempt from tariffs.

From people in the know it truly seems like he doesn't actually understand them

He doesn’t understand tariffs. He doesn’t understand how they work. He thinks we impose big tariffs on Canada. Canadians will pay for it.

He does not understand, although I’ve heard it explained to him in simple words, that the American importer pays the tariff and then tries his best to pass it on to American consumers.

He definitely doesn't.

He might ALSO be trying to shake down the Waltons for more bribes, but its been clear for almost a decade that he has no idea how tariffs work and doesn't care to find out since he doesn't have to.

"Donald Trump was the dumbest goddamn student I ever had." -William T. Kelley

This whole thing might be Donny trying to prove he knows better.

Whoever wins this slapfight, we lose.

Don obviously created his economic “plan” without understanding how tariffs work. All of the toadies and bootlickers were too afraid to explain things and make him feel dumb, so here we are.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

I'm not afraid to make him feel dumb. Can I go talk to him?

I guess we're taxing billionaires now…

Planned economy is cool now.

Sometimes I wonder if Bernie Sanders could sweep the Republican primary if he tried.

He probably could win at least a dozen or so states in the general that haven't gone Democrat since Carter.

People have gotten so used to thinking of politics as a binary that they're ignoring something that would otherwise be glaringly obvious:

Neither party leadership cares about the destitute majority and only the fascists are any good at pretending to.

The last time someone won the presidency in a genuine landslide was Obama running on sweeping systemic change in 2008. That he ended up governing as a your usual center right Democrat was a huge letdown that wouldn't happen with a true progressive.

I was gonna write out something better but no one really cares, Trump and his administration is full of dumbasses and the entire hierarchy of united states is crooked and needs to be turned upside down and transitioned into something else to even fix it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

Well good news, your fellow accelerationists are running the show! It’s just the “something else” they plan to transition to that’s the problem.

[–] scathliath 7 points 1 month ago

Oh no are the billionaires squabbling? How sad.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago

Isn't he constantly whining about people giving him bad unfair deals?

I don't think Donny T knows how slim the margins are at grocer's... This could have devastating effects for Walmart (which I'm personally thrilled about).
