The shows are cheap to produce, meaning they don't need the same number of viewers as a traditional TV production would, as a result. That's why there are so many of them. You can blame the current head of Warner Brothers Discovery, David Zaslav, for their proliferation.

because the ruling class is hypernatalist. capitalism requires infinite growth and you need to make new customers to prop up the system

This has kinda been going on forever in one form or another. We've just replaced the peasantry with the proletariat and the nobles with guys who own a string of used car dealerships

Why does this happen, though? Why do the trod-upon classes concern themselves with the meaningless drama of the rich? Why does it inspire amusement and intrigue rather than rage? biden_whywhywhy.avi

I can understand why someone would be curious about the lives of established celebrities like your Osbournes or Kardashians, or the inherent struggles of a family where most of them are little people or whatever

These are just generic rich suburban assholes

They're fantasy shows. People love to imagine having enough money to support a family with some left for personal hijinks.

I ask the same thing about cop shows.

Those at least hold the promise of the drama and excitement of seeing quote unquote bad guys and wrongdoers getting what's coming to them

There's the CSI effect, where the depictions of police give a false impression of their effectiveness.

Reality TV has a similar effect. It's distracting you with something.

Americans, no matter how poor and destitute, think they're just a few steps away from living that lifestyle.
