Vaguely related: after liberation when the land reforms started rolling out, eastern Wuchang outside the city walls was just absolute chaos.

So what the government did was say "hey, outside the city walls, if you don't already own a home, you can pick a plot of unoccupied land and start building a house :)"

What followed was the most chaotic placing of buildings you can imagine. The birds eye view looked like if you googled "the most optimal way to pack 17 squares".

The government was like "oh, yeah, that may have been unwise, building roads and around this is impossible, half of these are going to have to be demolished, we'll build housing then just assign it to you"

Very few of them exist to this day, but you can still see some houses that are placed perpendicular (or diagonal?) To the building next door. Like some face north/south and others just face northeast/southwest for no discernable reason.
