I get that but why does the train itself need to be suspended from the top rather than supported from the bottom. Does a suspended train have some advantage over an elevated train?

You can have a train on top and below going opposite directions without having to build 2 tracks, which would more than double the width of the track. The Hankou one I've been on neat the business district of Wuhan has one going clockwise and one going counter clockwise iirc.
