Freak culture is making its way mainstream, and if I may be so bold, I think a great deal of that is thanks to horror movies. Think of how many normies you watched over the holiday get really into Nosferatu memes, or how even the most Star-Wars-and-Marvel moviegoer you know will tip their hat to a messed-up A24 trailer. But hey, don't take my word for it, listen to one of the most important names in horror today: Jason Blum.

in 2023, Blum sat down with Nerds of Color for an exclusive NYCC interview. Not long into the discussion, interviewer Sophia Soto asked Blum why he, personally, kept returning to that most genre of genres, and his answer was very much about working weird into the wider world.

"I love horror movies," said the Five Nights at Freddy's producer, "Because it’s a way to like, smuggle subversive stories into the mainstream. So often these strange unusual stories are relegated to independent releases and tiny releases, and no one sees them, but horror is a great way to get subversive stories supported and told in the mainstream. That’s why I love horror."

As Popverse's resident goth kid, I'm absolutely biased when I say I completely agree. But my bias aside, think about some of the most lauded stories in recent cinema - The Substance, Get Out, Sinners - they're all unique tales that capture the human experience via blood, guts, and plenty of jumpscares. And speaking of that last point, Blum does go on to say that another reason he keeps coming back to horror is not just the subversive stories, but the immediate reactions he gets from audiences.

"The fun thing of doing horror movies," Blum told his interviewer, "Is you get to hear people’s reaction. You know, you make a drama, they might love it, but you won’t know because the audience doesn’t move. So, with horror and with comedy, you know if the people like the movie or not by how much noise they’re making and that’s very satisfying, when they’re making noise."

The Ugly Stepsister (2025)

Follows Elvira as she battles against her gorgeous stepsister in a realm where beauty reigns supreme. She resorts to extreme measures to captivate the prince, amidst a ruthless competition for physical perfection.

Apologies if this is not the community for a thread like this, I don't frequent this community as much as I should (considering the volume of movies I watch lol). But I just saw The Ugly Stepsister in theaters and I'm dying to talk about it.

I'm curious if any of you have seen it yet. It's still in theaters and looks like it's going to be fairly niche, I'm sure in no small part due to it being foreign. I definitely recommend it, I found it to be a fun spin on the classic Cinderella story that we get from the likes of Disney and a lot more faithful to the source.

Definitely not for those who are squeamish, but to be honest I found the body horror to not be over the top (unlike The Terrifier 2 lol). The scenes that were there definitely further the story and help with characterization, showing the absolute abuse that Rebekka is willing to put her children through just for some money.

I really liked the juxtaposition between Agnes, with her "effortless beauty" and going after the Prince seemingly for spite, and Elvira, who we obviously see undergo massive treatment to ascertain "beauty" and wanting the Prince her whole life.

Curious to hear anyone else's thoughts on it. I found it reminiscent of The Substance, both for the body horror and themes centering on physical beauty, as well as a LVT film with the dark and depressing feeling that it left me with 🤣

I watched it with the alternate ending first and then I went back and watched the theatrical ending. I think the alternate ending is objectively better whereas the original is kind of cheesy. The original actually made me jump though so I can't argue with its effectiveness. I see there is seven of these movies. Are they actually worth watching? As for movie one, pretty good. It creeped the fuck out of me.

The adaptation of Stephen King’s short story uses its source material as a loose framework for a Final Destination-style, gory comedy romp filled with a nonstop onslaught of over-the-top, Rube Goldberg machine-like elaborate deaths. All of it is a comical, carnage-fueled reminder of the film’s core thesis: Death comes for us all, and it’s quite silly to presume you can stop it.

Thanksgiving has regularly been given the short end of the horror stick. While other holidays are abounding with horrific takes on annual traditions, Thanksgiving offerings—despite the innate horror of both its origins and practices (family dinner…)— remain sparse. There’s the perennial slasher Blood Rage, and last year’s Thanksgiving was refreshingly fun. But other than some cryptic indies and made-for-television shorts, Thanksgiving doesn’t yield the horror buffet something like, say, Christmas does. Every year, the lists of horror watches are the same, and I pretty much skip straight to Black Christmas on Thanksgiving night. Until I rediscovered Madman. I rewatched it for the messy, endearing slasher nonsense, and wouldn’t you know? Madman is technically a Thanksgiving horror movie. Better still, the film is now streaming for free.

I have to say The Substance. It was really a joy seeing it. I was very exited that Coralie Fargeatwas made another movie since Revenge was a fun but painful watch. The ending was a mixed bag while I do see where it was coming from.

What is your favorite horror so far?

This is one of the most fucked up movie I've seen. I love it! It's so grotesque. The message of the movie is not to be misunderstood.

What do you guys think about it?

I've got to collect myself to write more. 🤣

I've now watched both. I didn't know the 2024 version was a remake, or I'd have watched that second, but I actually think that watching them in 'reverse' order is a better experience. If you've already seen both, maybe you can sympathise with that view.

Both films are excellent, don't get me wrong. But there are subtle (and some not-so-subtle) differences that really, really make the overall experience very different, including the impressions and understandings you come away with. The newer film is almost insultingly Hollywoodised, as it waterboards you with exposition that the original has no problem risking you not figuring out on your own.

Please do yourself a favour and don't read up on either film before watching them. I've been reading reviews of the newer film that completely spoil scenes in the original that were different. It's unreal how cavalier people are with that sort of thing 😒

So, my recommendation is to watch James MacAvoy absolutely demolishing the scenery with his chompers (I mean that in the best possible way), and then grab a cuppa and a blanket and watch the original.

Step into the dark and unsettling "Terror Tunnels," a spine-chilling found footage horror film. Witness hair-raising moments as unseen horrors lurk in the shadows, bringing a new level of terror. Brace yourself for a journey through the most disturbing scenes ever captured.

Written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane, Hysteria! will be exploring America’s dark history of mass hysteria through the shocking story of the teenage Satanic Panic. The series follows a group of 1980s high school misfits as they exploit the growing hysteria around teen occult activity. Here’s the full official synopsis: When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported “supernatural activity” triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.

With the remake of Speak No Evil out I was thinking about this topic. I can find that there are times where it's OK to make remakes and times where it's not. I like Chris Stuckmann's take on it; if it adds something more to the movie than what was already there to begin with go for it. But if it's just a frame by frame remake what gives? Why should I not just watch the original movie?

Speak No Evil is a really amazing movie that I really have a hard time understanding why they would make a remake of. It really did not need one, the original is really so good and effective that It will scare most people.

What do you guys think about this subject?

Spoiler alert: Do not watch the trailer of the remake if you haven't watched any of them. It's going to totally ruin the movie as it spoils mostly everything involving the plot.
