A remarkable coincidence

I dreamt I had maybe crashed out while extremely drunk and then realized that that couldn't have happened, because I was on a spaceship very far from the events that had taken place in my mind and, of course, we hadn't actually gone back to Earth for me to make an ass out of myself.

Then I dreamt that I woke up and despite my earlier conclusions, there was video of that shit, that I then watched and saw it starting with me failing to sit on a chair and assplanting in front of it. The few people who weren't scared of me were comfortable casually joking about this event where I got totally blotto and aggro.

Then I totally woke up for real, I hope.

My drinking as of late, while excessive, hasn't been to the point of losing control for almost a decade.

We had a "Bike Rave" in my city on Saturday. The event was awesome, good tunes, great vibes, massive turnout.

But I left my bike unattended for five minutes to take a piss, and all of my shit got stolen. My bike, backpack, helmet, gopro, hoodie, everything. I got stranded and had to walk back home. Ran into an acquaintance on the way home who gave me a couple of cigarettes as a consolation prize.

The good news is that I still have wheels, I've got a skateboard and I can still get around town. I had my wallet and phone on my person so that wasn't lost.

Take care of your things folks, and always have a backup in case bullshit thieves take advantage of you.

(Offshoot of this discussion on MLK vs Malcom X on violence)

What the Black Panther Party had done breakfast programs, free health clinics, and other mutual aid, but didn't do the community safety patrols?

We know that the patrols were effective, morally good, and a big part of the BPP's public perception. We also know that the United States is still racist as fuck, and that black liberation has not been achieved yet.

I see the Black Panthers as one of the most promising leftist experiments in the US. In the spirit of scientific socialism, how do you think the movement would have gone, had the party been less militant?

Would it have just been easier to dismantle? Would it have been seen as less of a threat, so not worth extreme actions? Would the general public have been more or less supportive? Would the black community have been more or less supportive? How would its legacy be different?

My analysisPartly informed by this interview with the BPP minister of defense

Benefits:

  • Community safety: obviously. The patrols were started to address a critical need in the community.
  • Recruitment: the militant aspect of the party had massive appeal to folks that had been oppressed for generations. It gave agency and a way to direct the rage into something useful
  • Publicity: great way to get into the news, which helps get the message out

Drawbacks:

  • Attracted more attention from the feds
  • Spooked white people
  • Increased risk for party members

Since we have the benefit of hindsight, we know that the feds were a major part of the dissolution of the movement. I assume that if the feds had NOT intervened, the movement would have continued to grow in power and made massive improvements to the lives of black people and Americans in general.

I trust that the BPP members made reasonable decisions to counter CoIntelPro, but I also trust that the focused power of the federal government is able to succeed in whatever fucked up stuff it wants to do. That's to say: the BPP may have simply been in an unwinnable fight.

Avoiding the eye of sauron for as long as possible is a prudent strategy, and I think a less militant BPP could have drawn less focus from the feds. Mostly, I think they received disproportionate focus because white people saw organized, armed black folks and it tickled the "enemy combatant" part of their brains.

If the party had instead focused on nonviolent mutual aid, I think it could have lessened the suppression efforts, possibly to a point where the fight was winnable. At very least, it could have given more time to grow the organization, so that once more militant actions were needed they would be more powerful.

On the other hand, I think there wouldn't have been as much excitement about the party. I do not know if having more time to grow without suppression would have been cancelled out by slower growth.

If we were able to run it back, I think a less militant BPP may have ended up making more progress towards black liberation.

Once, I tried to cheat on my exam, etching some of my exam review notes on my desk in elementary (it was not deep; some shallow pencil notes on wood).

One time, a teacher came in and almost caught it, but I had my pencil case hiding it in plain sight. Not that it helped much for exams

That was something I guess

I've noticed that Bluesky libs are making a big distinction between the cops versus the national guard/military. Many libs are agreeing (or pretending to agree) that LA cops are appalling. And they are reposting leftist livestreaming posts of cops using tear gas, etc. But now that the national guard (and military) are in the news - the libs are standing up for those groups.

NYT columnist Jamelle Bouie seems to have taken posting attacks on the national guard/military personally. And he's snarky about it too.

i sincerely think a lot of you believe that the people who join the service are robotic psychopaths who will mindlessly listen to whoever is in charge, and there is nothing i can say to disabuse you of that frankly delusional belief

https://bsky.app/profile/jamellebouie.net/post/3lr3tjgqzg22y

I'd bet money he has very good friends (if not family members) in the military.

In other news - I just finished looking at a Bluesky account where he called LA cops "racist thugs" but he had good things to say about the national guard. He went on to say he was in the NY national guard plus the army too.

Ninja edit

LAPD is an armed gang and ICE is made of real true believer racist thugs but the national guard is 95% shockingly normal people. The other 5% are weird. This ratio may vary slightly by state

Maryland National Guardsmen patrol near downtown office buildings, Tuesday, April 28, 2015, in Baltimore, a day following unrest that occurred after Freddie Gray's funeral. Gray died from spinal injuries about a week after he was arrested and transported in a Baltimore Police Department van. His death has become the latest flashpoint in the nation’s debate over the police use of force against black men.

Just finished my first week here. It's been exhausting but epic. I've probably walked about 70 kilometers this week which for my out of shape ass was rough. Prague is a stunningly beautiful city. I've spent hours just wandering the streets. My hostel was in Wenceslas square in the heart of old town, surrounded by ancient buildings. St. Vitus Cathedral is the coolest building I've ever seen and hanging out in 700 year old castles awesome.

I made a point of venturing outside of old town/new town to see the "real" city. Even there it's cleaner than any major US city. So far I've only made it outside of the city one day for some hiking but I'm gonna spend the next few days taking day trips to nearby cities and hiking spots.

I think beer has accounted for about 2/3 of my calories this week. Czech cuisine is entirely meat based and I'm vegetarian so i haven't had much local fair. But once you get out of the particularly touristy areas there's a lot of vietnamese and Indian restaurants and the prices drop quite a bit too. My next hostel has an actual kitchen so I'll get to do some of my own cooking and save a little more money.

I'm switching hostels today to a slightly cheaper place about 3k from city centre. Should be cool to see more of the locals hang out spots and such.

I'd imagine something more sugary like soda is probably better but if you don't have any or don't want it, try peanut butter. I learned in rehab that proteins help with the condition. How? I have no clue but they do I found and peanuts have lots of protein.

I don't interact with the various other Lemmy instances very often. I see almost no point in it, it's just reddit. All they post is endless articles from the Atlantic or Wall Street journal. Elon musk this, orange man that, all useless, pointless posting.

Recently, their favorite flavor of slop has been the "Tiananmen square massacre". This has brought out the worst in them. We live rent free in their heads, but especially whenever a socialist government is mentioned. They all come crawling out of their basements, pushing Funko pops and copies of Hogwarts legacy out of the way of their crusty, rainbow light keyboards to claim their knowledge of a Chinese protest is infallible.

My god do they not let up either. Any rebuttal is shut down by these drones. Any mention of "what about the Americans many war crimes?" Activates their inner CIA sleeper agent, and they hit you with "commies are just whataboutism. That's all they have. Well at least we have freedom. At least we aren't committing genocide." All extremely easy to debunk claims.

Don't get me started on isr*el. They sure do love their ethnic cleansing. More so than even the loudest of American Republicans I've ever heard. To them, Gaza is all "terrorists". They should all be killed in their eyes, their only hope of redemption is "non violent protest", aka, just lay down and die. Never in my life have I seen a larger group of far right genocidal freaks than I have on Lemmy world.

It's so ridiculous, it's comical. Say something like "hey this is misinformation" and a thousand replies will hit your inbox, all from dudes that post things like "Hamas needs to be destroyed", "people who don't vote shouldn't complain about anything" and my personal favorite one "Uh actually, I support the maori MPs getting suspended for doing the haka. That stupid dance is disruptive" (Yeah, real comments, not hyperbole)

The Nazis are in our backyard. And they should be bullied back to reddit where they belong.

I found a video online that I want to watch. The trouble is, it's on facebook and it says you need an account to watch it. So I tried to sign up to facebook, but when it gets to a certain stage in the process it says:

**Confirm your identity with a video selfie

To make sure that you're a real person, we need you to record a video selfie. We'll ask you to move your head during the recording to help us capture your face at different angles.**

What the hell? Is it me, or does this seem insanely sinister? what do they want this for?

As I posted last year, my old ex best friend has come back into my life. He used to be cool as fuck, he was charismatic and funny and pretty progressive for 1998. But then he did was all (nearly) all beneficiaries of generational wealth do, and became a massive reactionary, conspiracy theory knobhead.

I should have listened to my not cishet white friends and dumped him asap. I definitely let him say shit that I would never tolerate with another adult. Hanging out with him felt like work. But I felt that I owed him a lot because he was there all through my nervous young man years.

Not surprisingly he's antivaxx, and into all the alternative therapies that chuds are into like ice baths and ivermectin. I help my tongue for years about his absolutely fraudulent medical business because it was convenient and easy and I was being nice. And now he's pushing me and my gf to get involved, and not in a chill way either.

I should have just treated fascists like they deserve. Sorry for letting an absolute bigot be in my life because it was convenient for me.

My landlady spends all day watching right-wing news/chat programmes on TV, like GB news and all that. Today I overheard a conversation on TV, they were talking about how children of poor parents shouldn't expect society to feed them. A man phoned in to say he and his wife always fed their own kids, and the taxpayer shouldn't be expected to feed other people's kids. He said he'd travelled the world and had seen "real poverty" in other countries.

The presenter (a horrible woman, can't remember her name but whenever she's on TV she is always saying awful things) was agreeing with him.

What kind of sick, evil minds think it's OK to let kids go without food in the sixth richest country on earth? Who think it's fine to punish kids for their parents inability to feed them? Let's not forget many of these parents are in full time work but their wages are so low they can't afford rent and food.

And these conservative idiots always want to save a penny now, even if it costs pounds later. When kids become ill due to malnutrition and end up unable to work because of it, then these fuckers will be whingeing about the benefits bill.

I am sure this is what happened to me. I starved for years as a kid, and as an adult was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. A study recently came out showing that thyroid cancer can be caused by long-term malnutrition (especially selenium deficiency). Now I can no longer work. This is the real consequence of leaving children to starve.

And the idiocy of the man bringing "real poverty" in other countries has me enraged. Kids are going without food in the UK right now - that IS real poverty! I'd like to see that idiot look one of these hungry kids in the eye and say "Kids in India have it worse than you, so don't complain! It's your parents' fault you're hungry so why should I help?"
