Overall loved the show but had some mixed feelings about the final season.

Didn't really like Roberta just becoming a total feral animistic killer. Outside of the problematic aspects (also CW this anime has a lot of problematic and not-aged-well stuff in it) of that it felt a little out of character for her, wasn't her whole thing she was a super precise assassin who was trying to live a peaceful life, not like, a science experiment gone wrong? Also found it weird how a show that previously seemed somewhat sympathetic to radical leftists and skeptical of US imperialism suddenly presents a NSA black ops team in a wholesome light, especially right after they murdered a bunch of people for the crime of being DemSocs in Latam.

Also felt like there was some forced character development, I think they should have had another season. Rock going all Machiavellian made sense but didn't feel earned. Revy getting called out for having this secret fantasy of a normal life also made sense but again didn't feel like they did enough to allude to that in the previous episodes. Also they really should have spent more time with Dutch, I loved Dutch, probably one of the best black characters in anime ever but it felt like he got way less screen time than his character deserved.

Haven't read the manga so maybe it's better in some regards. Overall though still one of my faves now, like how much it embraces being over the top while also feeling a bit grounded in reality.

Tangent: when looking up Mamoru Oshii I found an interview where he compared the work culture at Studio Ghibli to a communist dictatorship ("communism is when capitalism"), because people of the 1960s "Anpo generation" (like Miyazaki) have "no morals" when they believe their cause is just...

These are subs of videos the Apothecary Diaries studio releases on their channel. Some of them are cute little chibi-ish teasers of the next episodes.

Also, here's the Seasons 2 Second Cour Trailer.

Really been digging this season. Think I'll probably pick up the light novels after it's over.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we’re returning to the much-beloved anime adaptation of Hirohiko Araki’s legendary manga, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, with episodes 1 through 6 of the sixth part, Stone Ocean. This one stars a lady, but she still does the usual poses and fights a bunch of muscley guys in ever-more-convoluted ways.

Next is Saint Young Men (2013), a Japanese animated buddy comedy, based on the manga of the same name, starring Jesus and Buddha as a pair of roommates in modern Tokyo. Hilarity ensues as they blog, debate religion, and become involved with the yakuza. This director Noriko Takao’s sole feature-film credit so far, though she was one of several directors on The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2006) and Lucky Star (2007); this is one of the very few anime films directed by a woman. Good reviews for this; let’s check it out.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:

Some notes before we start:

Firstly, I got all the plot descriptions from Anilist, so you can use that site to double check your answers if you want to. Keep in mind potential differences in phrasing or grammar, though.

Secondly, I tried to make these fairly easy to guess: although the largely a priori etymology of the words makes them a bit inscrutable, you can still work from the structures of the titles, and the initials and finals and lengths of proper nouns. If I decide to do this sort of quiz again, I might make it either harder or even easier depending on how this one goes. Feel free to ask for hints in any case — namely, time period, genre, or translations of individual words — and I may or may not give these hints to you, depending on how revealing it would be.

Note that the proper nouns are inflected for gender, with masculine names ending in -a or and feminine names ending in -e or (the -á/-é forms coming from an assimilation with a root ending in -a), and names ending in or being essentially unisex (coming from an assimilation of the -a or -e with a root ending in -o, -ó)

With all this out of the way, let's get guessing, shall we?

Edit: Thanks for playing! Every title has been answered for. I'll be back with more soon, probably!

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we’re watching Studio Trigger’s Kill la Kill (2013), which follows the struggle of a schoolgirl to find her father’s killer, and her over-the-top battles with other schoolgirls along the way. Apparently, this is influenced by Blorptube favorite Project A-ko (1986), which is a good enough endorsement for me. A lot of people like this series, so let’s dive in. Episodes 19 through 24 tonight, plus the finale OVA. We are finishing the series tonight.

Next is The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie (2024), the first completely traditionally-animated Looney Tunes theatrical feature. Warner Bros. shelved it last year, but an indie distributor negotiated for the rights, and so, here we are. Daffy Duck and Porky Pig star as a pair of housemates who drive each other crazy, but nevertheless must team up to repel an invasion of aliens determined to brainwash the entire population of Earth. This is the only feature-film credit to date of director Peter Browngardt. Good reviews for this, so let’s check it out.
