Camera: GrapheneOS's camera app. Have been my camera of choice ever since I've discovered it. Never had an issue, offers all the basic features you would expect from a camera

Meta: just making sure that anyone that reads this comment is aware of the existence of Obtainium!

Obtainium allows you to install and update Apps directly from their releases pages, and receive notifications when new releases are made available.

Yes, that was fast, but this is partly because of the introduction of channel giveaways a few months ago: channel owners can gift premium subscriptions to their subscribers, which will be randomly selected by Telegram (you don't need to opt-in). The channel will then be awarded the giveaway winners' boosts, that will let it unlock some additional features

That means that after some months, the giveaways winners will have to decide whether to renew their premium subscription or not (which was gifted to them: they might not be as interested in Telegram's premium features as paid users that decided to subscribe on their own). The current number of subscribers might be a spike caused by the novelty of giveaways. It's unlikely that the trend of gifting premium subscriptions will continue to generate this much revenue, but we will see. For sure this is a very convenient moment to decide to release some numbers on premium subscriptions ;)

Tried to open that webpage but godaddy asks me if I want to buy the domain. Typo?

[email protected] is here to cater to vegans, not people who are curious about vegans and want to interrogate them about things that they could much more easily discover from the first paragraph of a Wikipedia article

Originally, this was this community's intent too. The rules in the sidebar are willingly shallow about this kind of posts because at some point we decided not to be too strict with submissions, considering that there wasn't that much activity and the mods were mostly afk . So posts like this are tolerated unless they become an omnis cicrclejerk/backpatting fest

yes, https://www.telegram.org/apps lists both, but if you open web.telegram.org, you will be automatically redirected to one of the two apps without being given the choice. The differences are not listed because the two apps are supposed to offer more or less the same features, and anyway nobody's keeping track of them. As far as I know, also, the two developers are given great freedom in deciding which secondary features to implement (these webapps are not yet mature to actually replace the desktop client) so this makes keeping track of the differences a little more difficult.

You are basically not supposed to chose, choice is for those who are actively following the development of the two apps, apparently 🤷

If you want to get an idea of which client to pick, have a look at their telegram channels, they publish nice changelogs:

(also notice at the differences in the username and title format lol)

Yes, they are two different apps actively developed by two different people (A source code, K source code). They are the two winners of a contest Telegram held a few years ago, but they haven't' decided which one will be the default/standard webapp yet, so you can use both. I think web.telegram.org still picks a random one for you the first time you access it

I assume that by "channel" you mean "group"

On any platform, you can use the lens icon to search for messages. Once you tap/click on it, an user silhouette 👤 icon will appear. It allows to filter messages from a specific user, yourself included

If by "channel" you mean "channel", then there's no way to know which of the posts in the channel were sent by yourself, since they all appear as they were sent by the channel

If you want to see a list of all messages you've sent across all chats, then there's no way to do that unless you script something using the users API

At the time I knew what the fediverse was and I was using Mastodon quite consistently, and I was waiting for a federated alternative to reddit. Raddle at the time was already a thing, but federation was not on their roadmap.

As per how I found it... here's a comment from four years ago :)

The activity is being served a meal, not being served a meal with the ingredients you want. It looks like you're intentionally driving the conversation toward a useless semantics debate. Nobody's left out from a cafeteria serving plant-based food only.

I believe these new features were supposed to be included in the recent 8.0 major update, but they weren't done with the migration to 64 bit IDs yet at the time so they had to leave something for the inevitable 64 bit IDs update's changelog

After Telegram was forced to stop the development of its TON project, an open letter from the open-source community asking for Telegram to transfer to the community the ownership of the ton.org domain and the GitHub organization has been showed a lot of support from the community that evolved around the project over the last two years.

Telegram recently embraced the request with a comment on that issue

[16/07/2021] Security analysis of Telegram that exposes 4 cryptographic weaknesses in MTProto. The vulnerabilities have been disclosed to Telegram on 16 April 2021, and have been addressed with the release of version 7.8.1 for Android, 7.8.3 for iOS and 2.8.8 for Telegram Desktop. They do not compromise the plaintext payload carried in transit-encrypted communications through standard MTProto, and the paper concludes that "MTProto can provide a confidential and integrity-protected channel if special care is taken when implementing the protocol". However, it also highlights how properly implementing the protocol is not a trivial task, that might lead to a brittleness/weak implementation: even the three major popular apps needed to be patched to mitigate the highlighted weaknesses.

An interesting thing about videocalls: Telegram missed both deadlines Durov announced in an informal way about video calls (not by much):

  1. "we will be adding a video dimension to our voice chats in May"
  2. "later this Spring: TV station"
