were you hanging out with the intention of pursuing them romantically? that's what i assume they mean by "intend something as a date". though i'll add - it's not really a date unless both parties are aware that it's a date.

i think they're probably frustrated and feeling betrayed thinking that you were hanging out with them solely because you were romantically interested in them and not because you were friends with them. if that was the case, you were practically "intending" these hangouts to be dates.
