I keep saying that, but you know what else is an "obstacle to investigations"? Door locks. And window blinds. And envelopes that don't let you read the letters inside. And clothes - you can hide a bomb under them!

We should definitely all get ankle bracelets that will constantly transmit our location and record audio/video of everything we do so that we're not an obstacle to any investigations... How else would benevolent agencies like Europol keep us (AND OUR CHILDREN!!!) safe?

Because if there's anything a link aggregator needs, it's MORE reasons for people to not read linked articles! Will they also add AI responses? That way users wouldn't need to bother with reading OR writing!

I've enjoyed the last Tiny Tina one actually, except the atrocious DLC, but hated the dialogue in 3 too.

Hahaha, great point :) HELLO FELLOW HUMAN, WOULD YOU LIKE TO BUILD AN AUTHENTIC, TRUSTED AND ENGAGED RELATIONSHIP WITH ANOTHER HUMAN BEING THAT IS TOTALLY NOT A ROBOT? :D

Quotes from the original announcement:

Today, Reddit is the most human place on the internet, and one of the last places on the internet where brands can build authentic, trusted and engaged relationships with customers.

Bwahaha, "most human"? Really? Wow.

A scalable, AI-powered social listening tool designed to unlock strategic value

Barf. Oh boy, "social listening tool" - that's a new one...

These are tools for a new era of community marketing, one where brands can tap into Reddit’s authenticity

Yup, because nothing says "authenticity" like artificially realigned messages interspersed with AI slop ads. Such real, much authentic, wow...

Guess I'm not a REAL Borderlands fan, since I'm still not going to "make it happen" at this price, and even if I do eventually buy it (and that's an if - I'll carefully read multiple reviews and watch a couple of streams before I decide) it's going to be for max half that. Tough shit, eh Randy?

Great point. Somewhere along the way we started teaching facts and formulas instead of showing kids that learning is fun and encouraging them to do it on their own because they enjoy it and not because they have to...

Sigh, imagine an education system like that, instead of the current pipeline for creating obedient drones, holy crap...

Homework definitely is an issue, and a big one. I don't find it useful at all, and sometimes it can actually be detrimental, because until it's checked it can reinforce errors and make them more difficult to correct later... I'm not a teacher, but from a layperson's perspective I would be totally fine with zero homework. People need some downtime to relax, and kids are people too (or so I'm told), so they should have time to rest, play games or do whatever after school...

Wouldn't be surprised, since "no" as a full sentence does not exist in tech or online anymore - it's always "yes" or "maybe later/not now/remind me next time" or other crap like that...

I think the whole issue is much deeper, and stems from the fact that we (as in humanity, not any particular country) have perverted the very reason and purpose of education (assuming it ever was clear and uncorrupted, but that's another story).

Overwhelming majority of students don't learn because they want to. They don't want to become well read and spoken, they don't want to be able to answer questions without having to check on their phones, and so on and so forth. They "learn" because they have to. Because if there aren't enough check marks next to their name in an Excel spreadsheet somewhere, they're going to get in trouble. And that's why, if there's an easier way to get those check marks, of course they're going to use it!

Why spend days or weeks reading a long book if I can read an AI summary in 5 minutes and put a checkmark in the "read a book" column? Why spend time on writing an essay, if I can have ChatGPT do it and get a checkmark in the "essay" column?

I don't have a solution to this problem by the way, because I used to be a nerdy kid that actually enjoyed learning and craved more of it, but the real problem is not AI or LLMs, it's the whole approach to education (and to work afterwards: see the "oh shit, only a month until HR eval, what the hell were my personal goals that I made up at the beginning of the quarter?" situation so many of us face...)

"She went to a bar wearing THAT?! That's like really asking for it then, totally her fault, what was she expecting?"

I'll need to properly ID them later since they only have tags with their Japanese names, but I'm reasonably sure the top row from the left is a Leuchtenbergia, an Obregonia and a Crassula, and the bottom row is some kind of Gymnocalycium, a Haworthia, Blosfeldia liliputiana and another Haworthia.

Really cute, and they were really cheap to boot! Here's the other one:

Edit: I found the culprit! It is an app I've been using for years called "Notification Toggle" that has sadly been abandoned, and that seems to have a bug on Android 14 where it's icon will be stuck at 1 instead of showing the current date. I completely forgot it even had this function, because it was a default on all my phones for a looooooing time without me ever opening it or fiddling with the settings. Sad to see it abandoned, with no hope of getting this bug fixed, but what can I do...

I switched phones recently, and am very satisfied with my Xperia, but there's this one useless icon in the taskbar that annoys me a bit and that is like to hide, but I can't identify it, could someone help?

I tried SystemUI tuner, but it doesn't list it as one you can blacklist in the list of toggles, and I don't know how to find it's key to add it as a custom one. Tried turning off calendar notifications, but that's not it - it still shows. Does anyone know what it is and how to hide it? It's a minor annoyance to be sure, but it's completely useless, and I'd like it gone if possible. Thanks in advance for any help!

The one on the left, with beautiful curved spines, is Gymnocalycium saglionis, and the other one, with white hair around spines is Pyrrhocactus floccosus, a pretty rare one (at least in Japan). Hope they like their new home!

They were all so purdy that I couldn't help myself. Surprisingly affordable too, even the bigger ones, which is always nice.

I posted about my grafted bois before here (I wish there was a way to share instance-agnostic links, maybe some day...), but I have an update - one of them decided recently that having another cactus forcibly implanted on top of it is not nearly enough, and he started sprouting all over the place! What a little overachiever, eh?

The first pic is unedited, and here's the version I played with a bit, what do you think, is it too much?

Here's a few more, should be clear by looking at them, but unedited version first, edited one after:

I think I might have gone overboard with the Aztekiums (first pic), but other ones look kinda nice to me. Still a lot to learn though, one day I might be able to show how pretty these are in real life!

The one with dark, shiny leaves is Alocasia Cuprea, and the one with pretty stems is Alocasia Zebrina. I do hope they like their new home - had a bit of mixed luck with Alocasias in the past...

New flowers keep opening almost every hour - glad at least these bois seem to be loving the scorching Tokyo weather, because I sure as hell am not :)

Aaaaaanyway, here's more:
