Previously: Submission Statement Edition

Haven't done these in a while, so let's get started.

  1. Since we haven't really heard any feedback one way or the other, rule 8 is now official. To be fair, we've had a lot less microblog posts than I expected (only one Twitter/X post in the last month even after I waited longer than the initial 1-2 weeks expected, and that was a crosspost.)
  • Again, the rules are always a work in progress, feel free to give your two cents here whenever you like.
  1. As you guys know, PipedLinkBot went completely insane 2 days ago and looks like it's temporarily shut down. So, I'd like to use this opportunity to explain why I banned the bot pretty much immediately after our community reopened. (And gloat a bit, of course)
  • Even though I do agree with the principle of using open source, privacy focused frontend instead of using Youtube directly, I have a real problem with using a bot to respond every time somebody posts a Youtube link. It feels like spam, and it doesn't feel like it serves any utility besides pushing an agenda (even though many people here would agree with it). Most people have seen it around here enough to use pipedvideo if they wanted it to use it already.

  • I think it's always been a rage inducing part of the reddit experience that you see you received a response to your comment, but only have it been a bot smugly correcting your grammar or tell you all your letters are in order or something useless like that. So, for this place, I would like to make sure that everyone you talk to here is a real person as much as possible, because people inspire people to be greater, but bots don't.

Sandboxed Google services on grapheneOS.

The mark of the beast.

(Also, when do we do a google antitrust again?)

With the recent changes to how Google is doing things with Android, is it even worth it anymore? Should I just accept whatever version of Android comes with whatever phone or are custom ROMs still worth it? Assuming they still exist after all of this, idk what's going on.

As noted by the news release from CalyxOS and Mastodon thread from GrapheneOS, Google did not release the Pixel device-specific source code alongside their Android 16 AOSP release like they usually do. I think many of us, including myself, are hoping this will be published in the near future, but considering they moved AOSP development behind closed doors earlier this year, it's more likely Google has stopped publishing this section or their code altogether, making development of custom ROMs for Pixel devices significantly more difficult. Sad news for the Android ecosystem, and for open source in general.

Hi, I'd like some recommendations for recording gameplay clips on my Ayn Odin 2 max.

I'm really only looking for something that saves a cache of about 5~10 minutes worth of recording in the background, that allows me to save it to a default location if I choose to save it. Is there something like this for android?

Bonus if its less than 300 and has a replaceable battery. Preferably one that doesn't explode.

Hello,

I have been gifted a Pixel 6a, and clumsy as I am, I have already dropped it numerous times, or it fell from somewhere I placed it.

I am hoping to find a really good rugged case for the phone, but my go to for previous phones was the Otterbox Defender series, which I couldn't find for sale anymore. (Old phone, so I can understand that)

Are there any suggestions for reliable and incredibly drop safe cases available for the 6a still? Like, insanely drop safe as somehow I seem to have a bump or fall at least once a day. I'm so lost with all these random brands and have no idea what's reliable with them. And it really doesn't matter what it looks like. I'd take silicone wrapped in stone if it kept me from ruining my phone.

Any direction or advice is highly appreciated. Thank you very much for taking the time to read my post.

What happened to JuiceSSH? (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I really liked this SSH client, but I can't find it on the play store and I can't find any recent news. Does anyone know why it was taken down?

Edit: it's back up now, sorry for not checking. But it was down earlier this week when I was trying to install it. Would still like to know what happened, if it wasn't a random Google problem.

Google released a new version of its design system, a kind of extension kit, in alpha version: Material 3 Expressive, more energetic, positive and expressive.

I am an Android 9 and my friend is on Android 10. some days ago Quick Share tile disappeared from his phone and yesterday evening it was gone from my phone too. I saw quick share in Google settings yesterday morning in my phone. I also checked the Google settings in his phone but it was not there. is Google removing quick share from our phones because it was not very reliable?

So just now in my phone, the system UI, modem service, and other applications stopped working and after that my phone rebooted automatically. What happened there? It's running Android 12.

I used spotify but I think it's laggy and slow on my Pixel 8. Now I'm using Deezer, it's not perfect but it's better than Spotify IMO. Perfect is in my opinion OuterTune but there is no High Quality music. Is there something better than Deezer?

My requirements are simple:

  1. I am able to search past emails and view them.

  2. Able to "Mark as read" from the notification popup.

  3. No ads

My experiences are mixed:

Fairmail, Aquamail (when it was good) , K9, Thunderbird and similar apps **satisfied ** 2) and 3). However, they all failed at 1). The searches either return nothing or take a long time to load. So I have to swap to a browser , go to Gmail then search from there.

Outlook sucks at 3). Sometimes it gives me random ads within my inbox. It does 2) very well. For 1), it can retrieve the searches better than the group above , but not reliable.

The Gmail app excels at 1), it fails at 2) and 3). The ads within the app are not that terrible, but stil very annoying. It's been years and we still couldnt "Mark as read" from the notification. Surprisingly, Gmail works for 1) all the time.

Which one do you use?

I hate this.

Every time i add an event to my calendar i have to read the whole list of freshly randomized, non-fitting reminder-time-options just to set a custom one anyway.

And as my memory is completely unreliable i set like 10 different reminders a day for everything.

This is on Pixel 6a.

Is there an obvious fix i'm not seeing?

Thx! 🙂

I've been scratching my head with this one for close to a year now.

About a year ago my OnePlus Nord CE3 (Android 14, now Android 15) suddenly stopped recognizing the mic on any Bluetooth devices -- even when a device is connected, it stubbornly uses the mic on the phone itself, never the one on the device.

I've tried this with two pairs of TWS earphones and a Bluetooth speaker, all running either Bluetooth v5.2 or v5.3. All three of these devices work perfectly when connected to my Windows laptop.

Help? This used to work, I can't for the life of me figure why it stopped.

Hello everyone,

I have a Pixel 5 running Android 14, and I've always had this issue with Bluetooth devices (any device): after the phone disconnects from a device because of proximity (eg. going too far from the device), it never re-connects automatically when I get back into the device's Bluetooth range. I have to manually enter the Bluetooth settings and tap on the device name I want to connect to

This is something that always worked on my previous phone (which was running LineageOS)

Is this supposed to work this way? Can it be fixed? I've tried to look around in the Bluetooth settings but there isn't much to tweak there
