Yeah, I'm planning to keep a second backup in the office once I've figured it out at home. I think that should be sufficient. Will still keep it local in a networking sense, but I'm walking back and forth with my laptop.

It seems we don't really produce HDDs in Europe, which is still the cheapest storage for large amounts of data. But at least it's good to know that there are alternatives out there!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Goodram seems to be the best option for external hard drives, as Swissbit seems to lean more towards smaller form factors. Thanks!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Thanks! I'm not entirely set on whether I'll get HDD or SSD (I only need a couple of TB), so I'll check them out.

Yeah, I guess avoiding the US is probably the best I can do here.

Maybe Verbatim (edit: and Synology) could be a good option - they're Taiwanese, so at least it would somewhat align with my geopolitical positioning. :)

Yeah, for me too - I'd rather have feeds on top.

I'm following so many communities the list is really useless unless I use Ctrl+F. For users like me it would make more sense to collapse the list of communities unless I ask to see it.

Then again, I brought this on myself.

I really like that instance is now added to communities with the same name!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

I think that would be most people these days.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

They have powerful (and generous) international allies these days. No wonder they feel empowered.

unless every single person angry at his bigotry does everything right

If they do everything right according to his book they'll be busy licking his boots.

Could also be two separate things? I have a) dumped Windows and b) installed Lineage.

We're outsourcing thinking to a bullshit generator controlled by mostly American mega-corporations who have repeatedly demonstrated that they want to do us harm, burning through scarce resources and rendering creative humans robbed and unemployed in the process.

What's not to hate.

Yeah, I think these are good priorities, and PieFed.social seems like a pretty reliable new home. I'm obviously a fan, considering that I've been using it since the start. :)

Swedish journalist Joakim Medin has been detained in Turkey after arriving in Istanbul on Thursday to report on the current protests.

Since Medin notified his editor in chief that he was being taken in for interrogation – around lunchtime on Thursday – nobody has heard from him.

Joakim Medin is a regular contributor to daily newspaper Dagens ETC and has reported from and about Turkey regularly for several years. We do not as yet know where or how he is, and we are imploring the Swedish government to take action to help us get Joakim home.

The chief editor of Dagens ETC wrote the following commentary on the decision to make this public, machine translated using FireFox:

This is what Dagens ETC's reporter Joakim Medin wrote yesterday when he landed in Istanbul to monitor recent developments:

"They are taking me in for interrogations now"

Now it's been more than 24 hours.

Silence.

I don't know where he is.

I don't know how he's doing.

Not if he's interrogated.

Not if he's going to be deported.

We at Dagens ETC have feverishly tried to get answers in different ways (the UD and consulate are connected).

But a whole day...

Now we choose to do this in public.

For Joakim to be released.

Because freedom of the press is under attack.

I demand that the Swedish government act directly and sharply.

I expect the support of just about every other media.

Joakim went to Turkey to give Dagens ETC's readers all the nuances.

Now he can't do that.

With the hope of very quick solution,

Andreas Gustavsson, Editor-in-chief Dagens ETC

Woody Guthrie was never too vague about his stance on fascism, starting with the famous phrase "This Machine Kills Fascists" written on his guitars.

"All You Fascists Bound To Lose" is a song that takes this bluntness to a lyrical level, to the point where it hardly needs any introduction.

I’m gonna tell you fascists
You may be surprised
The people in this world
Are getting organized
You’re bound to lose
You fascists bound to lose

Race hatred cannot stop us
This one thing we know
Your poll tax and Jim Crow
And greed has got to go
You’re bound to lose
You fascists bound to lose.

All of you fascists bound to lose:
I said, all of you fascists bound to lose:
Yes sir, all of you fascists bound to lose:
You’re bound to lose! You fascists:
Bound to lose!

People of every color
Marching side to side
Marching ‘cross these fields
Where a million fascists dies
You’re bound to lose
You fascists bound to lose!

I’m going into this battle
And take my union gun
We’ll end this world of slavery
Before this battle’s won
You’re bound to lose
You fascists bound to lose!

What's pretty cool about All You Fascists is that Guthrie's BBC recording was lost for a really long time, so we thought we were just left with his lyrics. When Billy Bragg teamed up with Wilco to put music to unreleased Guthrie songs in the late 90s, nobody knew that the Guthrie recording still existed. The Wilco/Bragg version of the song is therefore recorded not as a cover, but as a completely original composition by musicians who had not had a chance to listen to Guthrie's original.

A video has emerged of the arrest of a Turkish Tuft University graduate, showing her argue briefly with the men in hoodies and black jackets before being taken away.

Tufts University has confirmed that the person is one of their graduates, and that her lawyer has not managed to get in touch with her.

There are a bunch of 50501 communities all over the Fediverse, and the numbers increased substantially with the state-oriented communities hosted by 50501.chat.

In response to this I put together a combined feed for the movement, which can be seen here: https://piefed.social/f/50501

As of now, the feed combines content from 64 different Lemmy communities hosted on five different instances. Lemmy does not (yet) support these feeds, but PieFed users will be able to interact with all 50501 communities in one place.

If anyone has suggestions for communities to include in the feed, or alternatively communities they feel should not have been included, feel free to let me know in this thread or over a direct message! :)

Excellent article by @[email protected] highlighting how Musk draws on experiences from Twitter in his ongoing destruction of the US state aparatus.

Behind paywall, but the author shared an excellent thread on Mastodon containing large parts of the article as attached screenshots.

This is pretty huge news for Mastodon users: Once this feature is up and running comments to a post will not be limited to whatever is federated to your server through indirect means. The whole platform should feel a lot more vibrant after this, and it addresses what has been one of the main complaints about Mastodon.

It is summarized like this by @[email protected]:

Some good news about #Mastodon, there has been a very significant bit of code added which will automatically fetch all the replies in a thread. This means everyone will be able to see a thread's whole conversation no matter which server they are on! 🥳

The code has just been "merged" which means it should become available in the next update to Mastodon, hopefully within the next few months.

(Those who want the technical details can see the Pull Request at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/32615)

While it is exciting, Mastodon CTO @[email protected] points out that we maybe shouldn't expect too much too soon, although it is a big step in the right direction:

it is important to point out that this is very experimental, behind a feature flag, and there will be a need for more changes to get it in front of people.
Also we don’t recommend activating it yet, this may have significant performance implications or bugs.

I just saw this post (with video) from @[email protected] on Mastodon, and figured it might be worth sharing. Looks pretty neat.

Hello Mastodon! I'm a power engineer who is trying out solo game development and on the way to release Power Network Tycoon - a game where you build and manage your own electrical grid with real physics simulation.

If you've ever wondered how power systems actually work (or why they fail), this might be your jam. I built it to be technically accurate while still being fun. To say it's been a challenge is an understatement...

Edit: This seems to have been caused by some sort of algorithm censoring certain trending hashtags, not bootlicking admins. More info here: https://floss.social/@admin/114041922033317834

In a reminder that you don't have to be a billionaire to be a bootlicker, and that one needs to remain critical also while on the Fediverse, floss.social is blocking anti-fascist hashtags.

[I have chosen to redact this toot - the user deleted their post in response to admins clarifying what happened, so out of respect I remove this copy as well. The gist was that users could not post toots containing #antifa or #noAfD]

https://floss.social/@OddDev/114040886

I realize this might be slightly outside of the topic of this community ("Dedicated to antisocial behavior of social media corporations"), but I think it's important enough to nevertheless be of relevance.

With apologies for my bootlicker comment. Though we need to remain critical on the Fediverse, the lesson here might also be that we also need to be charitable and not jump too quickly to conclusions—which I just made myself guilty of. :)

It's interesting how Instagram (allegedly) accidentally banned #democrat after the US election, and now a similar problem was identified on a major Mastodon instance before the German election.

It seems Ubuntu Touch for Fairphone 5 is now available from the ubports installer, which means it should be relatively easy to install!

It's still early, and some features are apparently not working yet (such as Waydroid, which lets you emulate Android apps), but it seems to be running pretty well already.

I found this to be a great write-up on how social media enables fascism by providing a sense of false agency: Posting online we feel like we are doing something, and we end up wasting our time shouting in a void rather than actually resisting.

Many of my journalist colleagues have attempted to beat back the tide under banners like “fighting disinformation” and “accountability.” While these efforts are admirable, the past few years have changed my own internal calculus. Thinkers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Hannah Arendt warned us that the point of this deluge is not to persuade, but to overwhelm and paralyze our capacity to act. More recently, researchers have found that the viral outrage disseminated on social media in response to these ridiculous claims actually reduces the effectiveness of collective action. The result is a media environment that keeps us in a state of debilitating fear and anger, endlessly reacting to our oppressors instead of organizing against them.
