Great question. I am in the United States and it would probably be best to stick with the United States for now. Probably Canada too.

Of course, I would like it if anyone from any country could use it, but that starts to get complicated. If a lot of people are interested, that may change things.

I ended up making the post about this: https://lemmy.world/post/31870332

I'm very curious what you think would work best. Also, if you are interested, you can leave a comment or direct message me.

I really like this device. It's really cool to see my saves on another device. Some of them are well over 30 years old. Right now though, it isn't seeing much use because I have all of my media backed up. Every once in a while I get something new and that's about it.

These are pretty expensive. I bought mine for $265. So to put this to good use, does anyone want to have their content backed up? I don't know all the details on how it would be handled yet. I thought I'd gauge interest first. It definitely takes some time to do, so it wouldn't be something I would be doing for free, but I'm sure we could come to a reasonable price.

I could also be interested in lending it to you for a fee and/or deposit. But again, I'm just gauging interest right now.

Happy to help!

I'll look into that. Thanks!

That's on my list! I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Right now, the idea is to compare the features against Pocket, at least to start. Would you want to compare any 2 options?

There are a lot of different types of people in the world. These 3 groups made sense to start with:

Also, a first blog post with details on how to move to Wallabag: https://getoffpocket.com/blog/get-off-pocket

I hope these guides help!

Thanks for the feedback. I just added the link to the description.

The link is the view for people who like to self-host. I'm also hoping to guide people who would never self-host to using open source tech. I'm a big proponent of that myself. I switched to Wallabag quite some time ago.

Graphene is likely to run into issues soon. They were relying on the AOSP source tree including Pixel-specific files. Google isn't releasing those anymore, so GrapheneOS would have to reverse engineer or extract the needed files somehow.

That's true for LineageOS, etc too, but they have more releases on non-Pixel phones so they may weather the storm better.

Of course, if you bought a Fairphone, my impression is that these problems go away. It's just a matter of their policies. I'm a huge fan of the idea of their phones but I don't own one.

Yeah, I wish it wasn't true. I miss my smaller phone. The one I have now is too big to be comfortable. Unless there's significant money in it, manufacturers can't justify the expense of making a smaller phone.

That said, it's a chicken-and-egg problem. A lot of people want a smaller phone. However, they can't even buy one. And the manufacturers can't tell that people want a smaller one because it's not possible to buy one. It might remain that way until one manufacturer takes a leap, makes a small phone, and it goes well.

I've made some updates. There are many perspectives to view a guide like this. I hope there are some improvements to the self-hosting perspective. https://getoffpocket.com/

I previously posted this at https://lemmy.world/post/30816595

I really appreciate all the feedback from the community! I haven't had time to address everything yet, but I thought I'd share the redesign as I continue to make this a useful tool for everyone who needs to find a new home for their articles. For anyone who saw the old version, I think you'll agree it has come a long way!

Still a work in progress, but even at this stage, I hope it can help you and anyone you know who has been affected by the Pocket shutdown.
