People in general will be happy if their friend gets promoted at work, but sad if they get hit by a bus. Is this a hivemind mentality? Or just the result of people having thoughts and emotions and values and ya know being people.

This is so true, it's exactly how the American regime has been conducting itself around the world for decades. They have just now turned it on us. I think it's because people started talking about Bernie and socialized medicine and universal healthcare and it looked like we might actually do something about it for a second there.
That's been his plan though. Whatever they let him do, he would try to do more. Then they would stop him in court, then he would blame the courts.
They've been pretty enjoyable. I definitely wrongly thought they were more obtuse than they are.
