I’d rather they just put some resources towards fucking enforcement.

Story of my life. Believe me, I'd rather they just enforce the rules, but after having witnessed too many drivers ignore those "YOUR SPEED" signs, I wonder if taking a different approach would work.

I'd personally want to have automated speed enforcement and actual traffic-calming measures, but there must be something low cost that drivers would be responsive to.

Just looked up some “penalties” in Canada for murdering people with your car.

If you use a car to drive aggressively and cause death, you only get a maximum of 2 years in jail. That's it. Take a life for maybe up to 2 years in jail.

It's not taken seriously at all.

The HWY7 stretch in Vaughan would be amazing if they cleaned those lanes. It's SO fast to go from one end to the other (except those super long intersection wait times). When there's car traffic, you're flying by hundreds of cars at a time, though. LOL

Steeles... that's a sketchy one. No better alternatives, unfortunately.

Reduce mail to 3 days a week.

TBH, if it avoids privatization and saves money, I'd be happy getting mail even once a week. Nothing we get by mail is so urgent that a few extra days will destroy lives.

In cases where something is needed urgently, there's courier, express mail, etc. as premium options. Regular "snail mail" isn't meant to be fast.

Explain.

Do police, ambulance, and fire need 4 lane stroads packed with gridlock, or 18 lane highways filled with traffic congestion to function properly?

We can have a working road system for emergency services, transport, and public transportation without the burden of car dependency.

GTA... Steeles Ave. at Markham/Scarborough, and HWY 7 in Vaughan. Thankfully, I'm only on those routes a few times a year. If I had to commute by bike in that, I'd take a car.

Kind of maddening that people who can't even afford to own a car have to pay for other people's car dependency, only to be yelled at for "not sharing the road" when they've got to get to work or school by bike.

The objections are kind of infuriating to listen to:

“They’re necessary, however, it doesn’t hurt to review what goes on with bike lanes and the money that is spent on them,” Hatcher says. “The reason why I say that is if you look downtown, for instance on Rainnie Drive, if you ever had to evacuate the city for a short term or an event downtown or what we do, it wouldn’t hurt to look at the traffic congestion.

Sigh. In an emergency evacuation or event, car traffic is what would be the most problematic.

“I don’t see that many people riding them. These thousand a day, I don’t know where they’re at. Not anywhere I see,” says De Angelis, who believes they pose a safety concern.

First, unless this person is watching all the bike lanes 24/7, of course she wouldn't "see them". And if connected cycling infrastructure isn't already there, then you won't see as many cyclists as you would.

“They make me nervous because people are wiggling back and forth, you don’t know whether to slow down, speed up or whatever.”

Exactly why cyclists need to be separated from “nervous” drivers. We can't safely share space if you're nervous, and we need room to negotiate around manhole grates, road debris, potholes, and parked cars.

“A lot of people ride bikes but there are more people driving and why didn’t they put them on the side streets instead of the main streets where there isn’t as much traffic?” says Adams. “There is enough traffic on the main roads already without putting more on the main roads.”

A) traffic comes from cars, not cyclists. You can fit 100 cyclists in the same space you can fit 10 cars, and you'll never have "traffic congestion" moving 100 or even 1000 cyclists.

B) Accessible, safe infrastructure needs to be places that lead to destinations, not away from them. If main streets are a direct link to a destination, then it should be for active transportation, public transportation, and pedestrians. Motorists should only use their car to drive long distances, then the last mile should be using any other method available.

C) The argument that there are more car drivers than cyclists is lame. You can induce demand for forms of transportation outside of car driving, simply by building the infrastructure. The fact that there may be more drivers than cyclists at any given time is more of a symptom of a car dependency and a lack of safe, connected active transportation infrastructure.

but you can make it as annoying as possible.

This is the way! It's a shame that we have to also inconvenience ourselves because of some degenerate thieves, but prevention is way better than dealing with the aftermath of theft.

They wear masks because their family would be embarrassed by this Nazi shit. Fucking disgraceful cowards.

even with a regular bike its hard to secure both tires with one lock.

Yeah, unless the wheels are bolted on, I'll use one u-lock to secure the rear wheel, and another to secure the front wheel and frame.

As long as I have at least one u-lock on it, I feel less uneasy about having my bike locked outside.

This is always an interesting point.

It's hard to believe that any small business in a busy tourist area would see less business with more foot traffic, as they almost always benefit from it.

Something tells me that businesses who are doing worse after something like this, might just have a failing business, and use this as a scapegoat.

Most of their casino ~~postings~~ ads are pretty blatant, but this one is so hilariously outrageous!

This might be a long shot, but I'll ask anyway.

I used to go through shoes like crazy until I got two pairs of Saucony Excursion trail runners many years ago, and I still use them in rotation but need another pair that I can size up.

Are there any Canadian companies (even if they manufacturer oversea), who have anything like the Excursion? Durability is a top priority, and it has to be all synthetic (no leather). 😬

Just a heads-up, while many of the stuff they sell are actual products of Canada (i.e. grown here, too), a lot of them are only packaged in Canada. They do list the country of origin, so you can easily buy NotAmerican ™️

A bit of a rant, but my municipality is building a "community square" in their downtown, but I noticed that there are no safe ways to get there by bike (or e-scooter, since we partake in a shared e-mobility program).

I emailed my city to voice my concern, and they said to contact the Region, who manages the main North/South road that brings you to the footsteps of this planned square.

They said that since there were no plans in the Regional cycling plan to add infrastructure to that particular road, we should just ride with mixed traffic.

For context.... this road is one-way, and four lanes. Two (one on each side) is taken up by street parking, despite us having quite a few parking lots and a large parking garage close by.

Example (and yes, the black car on the far right is illegally parking... there's another car behind them illegally parking, too............. ):

I asked if they could at least remove one parking lane to make a bi-direction bike lane that would connect two (East/west) bike lanes, and they said not a chance.

To expand, removing one parking lane would only "take away" 12 spots. 12 spots for sitting vehicles that take up two blocks, is more important than providing a safe passage for vulnerable residents to get to a public, outdoor community space??

This is pretty unbelievable, since our local businesses are all hurting downtown, and it only seems alive when we block off vehicle traffic during special events.

Seems insane how we bend over backwards for cars.

Rant over.

I don't game much anymore, but Canadian devs shouldn't be ignored.

On mobile, Rebuild 3 is developed in Canada. Of course, Death Road to Canada was dreamed up by abguy from Kitchener Ontario and it kicks ass!

On all major platforms Ubisoft has some awesome games from their Canadian studios like the Farcry series (Ubisoft Montreal & Ubisoft Toronto), Rainbow Six Seige, For Honor, and Watch Dogs.

Dead by Daylight is also developed by a Canadian game studio.

Share your favourite Canadian developers and game studios!

I thought something was up when a package no longer covered enough for a single pizza.

The larger packs were also <$4.50, and now they are $6 - $6.50.

I'd like to move all my business away from Walmart, and their pharmacy is one service we use often.

While I know there are "lesser evils" than Shoppers, they are walking distance away, and that's important to me.

Can anyone share their experience with Shoppers for their pharmacy, and even better would be from anyone who's switched from Walmart Pharmacy to Shoppers.

Thanks in advance.

Update: Thanks for all the input, guys! I ended up going with a local pharmacy. The dispensing fee is about $1 more than Walmart, but they offer free local delivery if I can't get to them, and the person I spoke to was super nice about answering my questions. Sounds like I dodged a bullet by not going with shoppers. LOL

When the dummy was dressed in the reflective jacket, the CR-V didn’t slow in any of the trials, regardless of additional roadway lighting.

You can't win. Wear all black to be "seen" by cars, or high-visibility to be seen by drivers and ignored by cars. 🤞

When mapping buildings, I'll switch between the ESRI and Bing satellite maps, since they both offer different "freshnes" and clarity, depending on the area.

However, when I use my official municipal or regional websites, they have ESRI maps that appear to be quite a bit newer.

Is the licensing different across different ESRI imagery sources, or could I use the more updated one as a guideline?

EDIT: I think I found my answer from the official OpenStreetMap Wiki:

" Esri is a corporate member of the Foundation."

~~"Esri allowed the usage of Esri World Imagery (and its variants) in OSM mapping, without restrictions and requirements. Even attribution is not legally required."~~

~~This is wonderful news! Having satellite images from only a few months ago, rather than a few years ago, is a game-changer!~~

So this might have been overly optimistic. There may be additional licensing restrictions on variants outside what's available in the OSM editor.

I keep seeing this in edits, but where can you view this "Lyft-owned street-level imagery"??

Even searching for it comes up with nothing.
