Edit: I missed some complexity as suspected! I'm not sure how this process would handle hard and symlinks. Would add an experiment for that before going with the nix and root folders (it shouldn't harm log at all).

Original text: Perhaps I'm missing some complexity in your setup but from my understanding it's really straight forward:

The main caveat is that you need twice the space of your largest future sub volume. A garbage collect - d and any manual cleanup can help you there. I'd gets that approach with /var/log and when that works move over to the more critical systems.

  • You create the subvolumes within the partition you want to keep.
  • Mount them at a temp location and copy the files over.
  • alter your hardware.nix or whereever you've set your mount points to use the subvolume.
  • rebuild switch and reboot.

If everything is working as expected, write a run book for every step and repeat with /home (i.e. have every step written up). Home is the second least critical folder for this.

Once you have your runbook repeat the process and when you run out of space resize as needed. (e.g. https://btrfs.readthedocs.io/en/latest/btrfs-filesystem.html#man-filesystem-resize)

That said: as you aim for the fully ephemeral root I personally would actually go the reibstwllwtion/reinstall route and write up everything I needed to do by hand. But that needs even more spare space (I'd prefer even a second disk for stuff like that to have a fallback).

Good luck!

That is a very good point which I haven't considered!

Thanks :)

I would. Well not against the individual athletes but against their country of origin. Countries screening would need to be better than the IOC ones or en par.

The basic framing is: "your boss fucked up, you're part of the fallout".

An alternative would be to allow all doping.

But at the moment the approach is to reward the smartest cheaters and at least for me removed all interest for most sport events.

It depends what kind of edits you're aiming for and what your setup is.

I have opted to go all-in and run Stirling pdf, which is a server solution and then you can do a shitload of things via web browser.

If quick and dirty is fine than inkscape is a surprise candidate - although it's aimed at vector graphics editing you can easily create overlays for PDFs as well.

I have set up an lts kernel in addition to the zen I use by default. See:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel

Disclaimer: this only works when something with image creation goes wrong with an update. Which didn't happen to me ever - unless I did a mistake or tested some kernel stuff. I only had bootloader errors when I screwed up pacman though. The fallback kernel in that case is on a USB stick...

Hehe true. And even that happened to me after a couple of tired "Syu enter". But then again I learned something new with nearly every repair!

Oh agreed! That's why I'm with OP actually that arch might not be the right distro to go for.

The person I replied to basically said "that's what you deserve for not doing it properly" if I understood it correctly - that's what I'm confused about as well.

What precaution would you expect OP to would've done though? A fallback kernel would be my guess - that's something many casual oriented distro do out of the box basically. . I read your post as "you're right, don't use arch" - something btw which I tend to agree with although I wouldn't say that's because of the precautions.

I use arch because there's no black box magic. For an end user who expects or wants that... Yes, arch might not be the right choice.

Just curious, what distro do you use that systemd is not the default? (I at least you didn't change it after the fact if you don't have any feelings (towards unit systems ;) ) )

In case you don't actively check back in the thread: there's a white in depth answer now what gear the is and why the person answering "yes" is very likely wrong.

Worth a read!

"Wenn ich es richtig verstehe" - Disclaimer:

Die zweitstimme bestimmt "von welcher Partei" und hat Vorrang. Die Erststimme sagt "Wen" und wird danach betrachtet.

Das ganze natürlich noch mit dem "mal gucken was sie aus dem Verfassungsgerichtsurteil dann wirklich machen" disclaimer am Ende.

Freue mich natürlich auch über Klarstellungen, Ergänzungen und Korrekturen!
