This is more 2010s but I want to say rage comics, yet we can’t seem to rid the culture of that completely we just rebranded to wojaks or whatever

Computers having hard drives that failed every few years or would break after a drop or bump. SSDs are a godsend for more than just speed.

I haven’t been exposed to shitty reactionary nationalist slop music in a long time, I recall Bush having a weird cult of country and rock songs about how great he was and how America kicks ass or whatever. I know that still exists and Trump has some white “hip hop” sycophants slobbing his knob but I will pretend that doesn’t exist because it doesn’t get the same mainstream exposure.

General shittiness to marginalized groups seems less accepted today (but is making a comeback). Growing up even “socially progressive” figures would make jabs at trans people, gay people, mentally disabled people etc as punchlines. I hear that bigoted garbage more now than a few years ago but still far less common than during the aughts

Mostly thrifted but I have a few pairs of uniqlo chinos for the same reason you stated, that free alteration. I wear black or khaki chinos like 90% of the time, they’re flexible for casual and formal settings so it lets me keep my wardrobe small. Generally all straight cut, with some relaxed or slim fit. I like some room to breathe and don’t want the skinny fit stuff. I also have some dickies and other thicker pants in a similar style for hiking and outdoor work, and some sweatpants for working out. For a long time I had 4 pairs of pants total until I started thrifting. I went to a thrift shop in a college town and got two pairs of brand new pants for $4 each, I love it

So does giving blood/plasma help with this or is that just serum levels of microplastic

Hell yeah do it. My games of choice back then were Gmod, Arma 2, BF3, and CSGO, so there’s no real way to recreate those experiences given they’re all online or patched into whole new games

It’s good that it’s gone, but this makes me think US imperialism is going to stop trying to curry favor with soft power and kickbacks for compradors, and instead go full mask off and just coup or invade everyone they want shit from. I know that the hard power has been used excessively throughout US history for these goals already but I worry it could ramp up to new levels.

App Management: Work outside of the play store where possible. Use F-Droid, either the official client or a third party one like Droidify. If something is not available there but has its own repo, go for Obtainium. If all else fails fall back to play store or aurora store. Aurora store is more anonymous but sacrifices signature checking so it’s technically less secure than play store, be aware.

Core Apps: check out the Fossify apps on f droid (might also be on Google play store idk). They have really solid apps for your calendar, file manager, dialer, sms, gallery, music player, clock, etc which also look nice, I think. I also love DavX5 for my contact and calendar sync but that might not apply to your workflow.

Keyboard: Try Futo, it’s source available and feature rich with respect for your privacy. For fully open source, I recommend HeliBoard. You could also try FlorisBoard but I don’t have experience with it.

Navigation: Either OsmAnd+ or Organic Maps are great, both are open source.

VPN: Mullvad is the only well vetted option IMO. Others trust proton for this but Mullvad has an unbeatable track record.

E-mail: Proton is good and yes you can forward all your Gmail messages to a proton account, they have a whole guide for it. Tuta is another good provider. For accessing other email accounts I like K9 Mail and FairEmail.

Weather: I like Breezy weather from f droid.

Others: Using a FOSS launcher like LawnChair, Fossify Launcher, or Kvaesitso gives you an open source base to build on and removes another route for tracking and analytics. You can get fully FOSS browsers on F Droid, but if you’re looking for Firefox it’s not there; look for Fennec instead, it’s the FOSS build. Apps that don’t use Google play services might not have full push notification support, but a growing open source standard is UnifiedPush; look into their compatible apps and download ntfy to use them if you’re interested. Look into alternate front ends for media consumption types of services, e.g. using NewPipe or GrayJay for YouTube to avoid signing in or breaking anonymity.

I’ve spoken to a nvidia engineer before who told me how they have optimized for 8 and even 4 bit fp operations using dedicated hardware and lookup tables for the explicit purpose of ML tasks. So somebody has used this before, just not in this way I suppose

So does this include FAFSA? Good luck Trump with your visions of a strong domestic economy when the US is intentionally completely isolated by sanctioning itself, all the experts are leaving for China and Europe, college is unaffordable and you decided to sink the only program making a degree somewhat feasible, and the immigrant precariat your agricultural policy relies on have all been deported. Great job Mr president sir really smart genius large brain moves, can’t wait to see what you do next to lash out as this ship sinks

As somebody who grew up in the middle of nowhere and still lives there, there is nothing about living in the woods that makes the ethics any different. If it’s about saving money then do as my friends and family have always done and use all that rural land to grow fresh vegetables. We have a whole lot more dirt to do it on, and it’s much cheaper than buying all that hunting gear. Rural people can love animals and not make excuses for their murder, and the same arguments are convincing whether you live in a high rise or a trailer. This cItY SliCkErS just don’t get it! bit is too cringe
