I think there is an argument to be made within any strain of Marxism that lifting people out of poverty by and large isn't a measure of socialist transition and is something that even happens in capitalist societies. The idea that socialism is when the government does stuff has been pretty thoroughly criticized on the left. You'd have to look at the poverty reduction within the greater context of the Chinese socialist project to see overall how China is on the path towards socialism, which is an uneven, dialectical process and not some paved road from A to B.
The signs of being an ultra are more like the dogmatic book and hero worship, the lack of material analysis (using Lenin's description of the new deal to compare China is nonsense because America in the 30s is not China in the 80s. - ultras, like liberals, struggle to differentiate content vs form). Another example of this is comparing Bernie Madoff to China executing billionaires as examples of how America and China are basically the same. They assert that Madoff was an example of the capitalist class punishing one of their own because flagrant ponzi schemes look bad for the status quo. Ironically for a group of people who love to throw around "no investigation, no right to speak," they haven't looked at the American economy long enough to know that it is almost entirely comprised of varying levels of schemes. Or how they ignore per capita statistics for China's amount of billionaires while also ignoring that the majority of private businesses in China have less than 8 employees and the majority of businesses in general are entirely state owned.
