Ah, yes, I've seen this, and it's great! She and Tosin were actually partners. I saw Animals as Leaders live, and they're my favorite band of all time, so here's what I have in mind for similarities:

  • Strawberrry Girls - They're more in alignment with Polyphia and the modern clean-guitar-driven kind of mathcore shit than anything else, but seeing as how this is one of Animals as Leaders' more chill songs, you might fuck with them. They're primarily instrumental, but a lot of their tracks do feature vocals. Their whole discography is gold, IMO, so I'd recommend just starting chronologically.
  • Polyphia and Others - On the note of mentioning the instrumental math rock-esque of bands, if you haven't already checked out Polyphia, do so. Similarly, they're mostly instrumental, but they occasionally have a vocal feature that hits, such as in the song "ABC" with Sophia Black. Also consider Plini (also saw him live!), Chon, and some other instrumental prog metal acts that frequently feature clean-guitar-driven parts like Intervals, Scale the Summit, David Maxim Micic (occasionally has vocal features, including female ones), Wide Eyes, and Sithu Aye.

To give an album recommendation for each of these:

  • Polyphia - New Levels, New Devils
  • Plini - Handmade Cities
  • Chon - Self-Titled
  • Intervals - The Shape of Colour
  • Scale the Summit - The Migration
  • David Maxim Micic - BILO III
  • Wide Eyes - Samsara
  • Sithu Aye - Set Course for Andromeda

I don't know how many times I gotta say it, but something white leftists just can't seem to get:

I'm Black before anything else.

Just ended up getting the most pretentious Frenchie in my DMs all because he wanted to debate etymology with me. Here are some banger quotes:

[CW: Cringe, Brief Mention of French's Horrible History]

Him: "Etymology is the logical root of words. Without it, language becomes arbitrary, malleable, stripped of meaning. That’s exactly what the system wants: to twist words in order to twist thought. Newspeak begins here—when we forget that freedom, justice, or authority have precise, inherited, rooted meanings. To know etymology is to resist. It is to think clearly with words that still carry truth."

Him: "Every word carries historically constructed semantic content. Its etymology reveals not only its linguistic origin, but also the primary intention behind its use. For example, education comes from the Latin educere, « to bring out, to raise » a dynamic toward autonomy. If we redefine this word to designate simple conditioning or passive transmission, we negate this fundamental orientation. The word then ceases to designate what it designated. This creates a short-circuit of meaning."

Me: "No, this is not true. Etymology does not set rules. Like I said, please acknowledge the fact that you have to concede that 'girl' is gender-neutral in this case. You don't have to do a whole critical analysis here—it really is not that deep."

Him: "We don’t have gender neutrality in French. In German, they have feminine, masculine, and neuter."

Me: "Okay, but that's not relevant to the fact that we say 'girl' in English to mean 'female child' specifically despite it etymologically descending from a gender-neutral term"

Him: "So we can write anything arbitrarily and interpret words without foundation. Worse, we can lose words to ideologies"

Me: "Strawman argument. I said that words are defined by how they are used, not that you can use 'toaster' to mean 'tree.' My argument is that etymology doesn't prescriptively dictate the meaning of a word, and there are many examples of this."

Closed out with this:

Him: "I am not responsible for the lexical poverty of English and your difficulty in accepting that Latin words are relevant and based on implacable logic. Etymology is a major tool against obscurantism. Extremely so in France, where the system is violent in its distortion and dilution of words. It is a tool. An empirical DNA."

Me: "The system is violent in its distortion and dilution of words? Reminds me of how your people were violent to mine when they enslaved them. Now fuck off."

and then I blocked.

And how did this conversation start? Someone used the term "principle" instead of "doctrine" (in a particular context) in an Instagram story I shared, and he replied to it with, "It's a 'doctrine.' Not a principle!"

I shit you not. 🙄

I'd need 150 by the 13th, which is quite a while from now, but I figure I'd get the word out sooner

I think the racist tenant might actually be gone???

Because of what happened in the case of his last odd absence (which lasted for about 2 weeks and then he popped back up out of nowhere), I tried not to get too hopeful or celebratory this time around because I kept thinking that I'd be disappointed again, but, bro, it's been at least 27 days, and I haven't seen him at all. Not a single sign of his presence, and believe me, when this guy is here, you'd know.

None of his weird mumbling noises, none of his going-in-and-out-of-the-door-a-billion-times-for-whatever-reason moments, none of his obsessive hovering on the kitchen, which is why I was finally able to cook this

Even on a weekend night, I never see the lights on in what is supposed to be his room. He's definitely not in this house.

What gets me is this: if he lives here, he'd have to be paying rent. If he's paying rent, he'd have to be going to work. And if he's not commuting to work from here, then how is he getting to work? I know his work isn't giving him some crazy generous vacation time or shit like that...

I just like to force myself to believe in the theory that he got mauled by a pack of wolves or something like that.

Either way, there's still a part of me that is skeptical (I don't want my hopes shattered), but I don't think it seems likely for someone who'd be staying at a place to basically have two unusually long absences in such a short time span apart, especially if the second absence has been going on longer.

Although, somewhat recently, about 2 weeks/14 days into when I've been counting his absence, the lndlrd sent a group text, and his number was still included. However, obviously, this could just be a mistake or an instance of him still being "officially" on the lease while not actually being a tenant anymore for whatever reason.

A part of me really, really, really does not want to seem hopeful, even if the odds seem in my favor. It's also worth noting that when I talked to the lndlrd one time, she told me that he wants to leave and actually is looking for a new job to make money to do so quicker... so on that note, we have another sign: he wants to leave and has stated plans for doing so.

🤞🏿🤞🏿🤞🏿
