For context, this is probably where the Ukrainian troops are fighting with the largest disadvantage, attacking into Russian-held territory while across a river from supplies and reinforcements. I was amazed that they managed to make the crossing at all, and now I'm amazed that they're able to hold on.

On the other hand they're not fighting into multiple layers of trenches and minefields. Nova Kakhovka dam destruction really fucked with Ukraine plans for summer offensive on all fronts though.

The point of the article isn't that 'news:war sucks' it's that it's a first-hand experience of the frontline over the Dnipro, which slightly contrasts the feeling given by official Ukrainian government statements.

Outnumbered and outgunned, one front-line soldier has given a sobering account of Ukraine's struggle to cling on to its foothold on the east bank of the vast Dnipro river.
Under relentless Russian fire, the soldier spent several weeks on the Russian-occupied side of the river as Ukraine sought to establish a bridgehead around the village of Krynky.
