Anti-piracy nerds. Nintendo doesn't need your fuckin' money and I will openly tell you to pirate my own shit if you can't afford it.

A whole lot of anti-piracy nerds are Nintendo stans and it's fucking weird because Nintendo's ahead of the curve when it comes to greedy bullshit. Good luck legally playing a nostalgia title without getting an overpriced bundle with Ice Climbers in it. Again.
ngl I'm still a little salty that they took the NES consoles out of animal crossing after the first game
Eh, Nintendo still does greedy bullshit and I say that as someone that often plays their games.
I think you're agreeing. Nintendo's legal department is famously a total bucket of assholes.
Yeah, that's what I meant by "ahead of the curve." I mean worse.
OOOOHHHHH
True, true.
War Thunder military documents leaker is my favorite subtype of Gamer.
That is actually cool and good, though. Off topic!

I don't personally know anyone who is into it, but seeing people online who are super super into Hearts of Iron 4 make me uncomfortable for reasons I don't know how to articulate.

I don't think Hexbear is entirely safe for criticizing that fandom, either.
Not throwing shade at any comrades here, I'm thinking more of the sorts of people who go on multi-tweet tirades about its mechanics and factions and stuff. Usually, they come off as pretty outright fashy.
every post on HOI4 forums seems to be like "i played as the nazis and did genocide (not a nazi btw)"
I dunno if it was actually HOI4, but I remember a post just like a day or two ago in the dunk tank that was....well, quite literally what you said.
Yeah...
My bro is an HOI4 stan and an alt-right person as well.
Coincidence? I think not.
Pretty high chance your bro is into
He also considers himself a "classical liberal."
Go on, tell me where he got that one from.
Guess. Just guess.
Actually, no, worse (imho).
Sargon of Akkad.
Carl of Swindon is one of the most laughably "centrist" cryptofascists out there. I'm surprised by the sheer banality of that choice.
I hate the bastard lol
But yeah, he's the one that always posed a "liberal" or "classical liberal." Not sure about now though haha
Oh God yes...
Y E S
I mostly play it to make the Nazis lose earlier and harder than they did IRL
Berlin by '43 or bust
I play it for Kaiserreich's Syndie world revolution.
Lots of 20 year old HOI4 stans giving money to the IWW every month but never showing up to a meeting.
Honestly?
Telltale fans because they defend games that legitimately suck (okay, fine, this is more of an opinion and I don't really "revile them" per se) to the point where you'd think they were better than they were, especially after the first part of Telltale's The Walking Dead (which is the only "good story" of theirs, but still barely had any alternative paths or branching decisions).
Though the recent The Expanse video game seems interesting and seems to have actual gameplay so that's neat. Maybe the decisions will actually matter... Oh yeah, and I think there's a recent Star Trek one as well.
Oh yeah, and Dark Souls fans just for the "git gud" meme alone.
Otherwise, I can't think of anyone specific if you want that.
I'll say this: the Tali fandom from Mass Effect on the old BSN forums were, other, pretty crazy (and it's not like I hate Tali given that I barely played the Mass Effect trilogy). But yeah, they had a... reputation. You said one bad thing about Tali and it was your neck on the line, or that's how it felt like, and the witch-hunt seemed to carry to other parts of the forum...

It's not quite but that kind of reminds me of the really obnoxious side of the Doctor Who fandom that can not shut the fuck up about "who is best companion" and rate them in increasingly horny or shippy ways on tier lists and get downright feral if their thirsty shit is called out.
Yeah, it's not just g*mers that do it, but yeah, and I'll just say that some gaming fandoms are worse than others.
One of the most obnoxious uses of false equivalency on the internet is the "every fandom has good and bad people in it therefore all fandoms are equally good and bad, you can't criticize specific fandom" takes.
I don't think stamp collectors have an equal chance of Heated G!mer Moments as do, for example.
Yeah, I agree.
Like, once upon a time, the Sonic fandom was indeed pretty toxic, though it's gotten better over time.
There are differences... and then there are degrees as well.
Let's not act like we're not seeing "quality" in action.
"Historically Accurate" slashy stabby choppy medieval killyman game fandoms tend to be a lot more toxic than other game fandoms. Just the chat/lobby text alone is often repulsive enough for me to not stick around.
You know what's "historically accurate" as well?
HOI4 fans being... problematic and not just in the typical "toxic" way but in the fascistic way too, tbh... (but still toxic as well!)
People who talk about "must-pulls" in gacha games, especially when you can easily clear all content in the game without the so-called "must-pulls".
I'm sure the companies are happy a portion of the playerbase is doing their job for them by amplifying the FOMO and making players who don't know better feel pressured to pull for units they potentially don't even want.
Genshin Impact apologists are glaring examples of that. They really can't come up with bearable justifications for all the greed so it becomes "what's the most fun way to be turned upside down and shaken for money" discussions.
That's the most egregious example I can think of. It has a very easy endgame you can beat with a million teams, but also a ton of players telling you how you need x character or you're coping.
As if the fomo already inherent in gachas isn't bad enough without players making up stuff like this.
Fortnite's fandom's bullying of "defaults" is even worse but it's sort of the background noise of culture.
Griefers. If you see two people playing Chess in the park, walk up to them, and flip the table, you'd rightfully be called an asshole, but somehow doing the equivalent online is supposed to be okay.
ITS JUST A JOKE BROOOOOOOOOOO WHY ARE YOU BEING A (ableistic slur) BROOOOOOOOOOO
The Total War "historically accurate" purists fucking suck.
Not only will they just refuse to admit they don't want to see women and brown people in their games, but their dumbass opinions about how gameplay should also be historically accurate are running their games into the ground
I hate the ”MW2 lobbies were so much worse” argument so much. One of the reasons some of us never played those games was not wanting to hear some g*mer shouting slurs, and even the some of the ones who tolerated that shit actually grew up. If you haven't, maybe go play something other than like the only game in existence that actually punishes you for abusive language, it doesn't make the community ”soft” for wanting others to follow the rules.

Without exception, people I've had to deal with that pulled the "MW2 was worse" internet tough guy card gave me the impression that they were that worse part to begin with.
