Video Game Art

Video games are not mere time killers. They are albums of sound, aesthetics, animation and narrative.

This community is in appreciation of that. Screenshots, fanart, animations, gameplay clips. It is all welcome here.

The one common thread should be an eye for the aesthetic. This is not a place to discuss mechanics or stats, but to show off simply the artistic, expressed through the video game medium.

  1. All rules of the parent instance apply. That is, sopuli.xyz
  2. Include the name of the game your post is associated with in the post title.
  3. If your post is fanart, include a link to the artist in post body, if you can. You may also ping @[email protected] to have it attempt to find the source for you, and provide it in a comment.
  4. MARK ANY TEXT SPOILERS, as for art, do not post content that outright spoils key moments of a games narrative. Content that can only be understood with the context of having played the game, is ok.
  5. No generative AI art.

This is probably going to seem wildly low-effort compared to my usual posts here, but I've found a bit of a treasure trove of print media gaming ads from magazines and sites. And they're amazing. I found it so fun to see what companies used to do to promote their games.

Things have clearly changed a lot over time, some of them are insensitive or even outright sexist, but if you just look at it through a lens of being a time capsule, it's fun.

This one's going to be very image-heavy. If you're using Boost on iOS then you might struggle to scroll through this (or maybe not? It's happened with all my other posts though, so you've been warned), if that happens just visit using your browser :)

Game Boy Advance/SP:

The 'feet' collection were from an ad company in Stockholm, in 2005. I think it is to mean you're using hands to play the GBA, and only have feet left to use for real life:

PS2:

Nintendo Game Cube:

And that's that! Just interesting to see a time when gaming was a little more experimental and edgy.

A lot of these are extremely horny. Culture really has changed.

From looking at gacha games, I don't think it's actually changed that much.

I guess the style of horniness has changed, in the 90s, there seems to have been a bigger emphasis on innuendo. These days you can find any type of porn game you like on Steam.

It’s not that horny I sniff my wife’s panties after every taco night.

Some of the GBA ads I remember from men's magazines.

I don't think those ran in GamePro, Tips and Tricks (which oddly enough was published by Larry Flynt), and certainly not Nintendo Power

I forgot about Mario's canonical generic tribal tattoo.

Are these backed up to archive.org? If not, please do!

That "reflective" makeup in the ps2 ad is crazy cool. Even though I tell my brain it is makeup and I zoom in so I can see the matte finish, I zoom back out and she's shiny again. Really really cool.

the image in question for those too lazy to find it in the original set
