This is just a scientific vibe painted over the old superstition about running a fan at night and blowing all the oxygen out of your room.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 5 days ago

Idk dude, if fan death is real couldn’t AC murder be as well?

So stupid, if you wake up freezing set the AC at 23-24C, it'll keep the room cool 'enough'. Also, most ACs now are very efficient and don't just turn off and on but have many levels.

We've discussed the effects keeping your AC has on sleep, but the constant running could also make the unit cold to the point where it breaks. It will reduce the pressure in the evaporator or coiling coil component inside the unit until it freezes over. The freezing could cause the compressor to become damaged and result in your AC no longer working.

No, ACs have sensors to prevent that. The compressor trips. Also, in a warm environment, the inside unit coil will not freeze, if it does, something else is wrong with the AC.

If you use your AC it will break! Trust me bro

[–] [email protected] 16 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It can freeze with constant running if the coolant is low but yeah obviously I agree with you

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago

which is far less common then people think those are closed systems with extremely minimal losses. HVAC techs I know constantly joke about the "top off my coolant" like it's oil in a car

[–] [email protected] 23 points 5 days ago (3 children)

you should refrain from directing a fan' or having strong AC on throughout the night. This is because the concentrated cool air can make your muscles tense and cramp up,

Bloody hell, how low are these people setting that shit?

[–] [email protected] 19 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I know burgerpeople who set their AC to like 19C or 20C at night with a ceiling fan so they can use heavy blankets

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 days ago

I live in a cold climate and start sweating when it hits 65F if I do anything more than be motionless and even I don't put the AC below 77F when I'm in a hot place.

just anecdotally I once woke up with a fucked neck that i'm pretty sure was caused by pointing a regular box fan at my head overnight

always pointed it off to the side since, and it hasn't happened again

[–] [email protected] 8 points 5 days ago

Interesting, I had never heard of that, thanks for reducing my ignorance doggirl-thumbsup

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

That's definitely a real a thing, it's happened to me several times.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago

If it's 60-65 inside I'll get cramps in my legs if I don't have a thick blanket, your body temperature regulation goes a little weird while sleeping I think.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Lmao, how much did the AI lobby pay for this ad? Are we going to start pushing fan death articles, too? Actually, just turn off the main at the breaker to save power every night. Also, get ready for the opposite article in the winter: "Should you turn off your heat at night? It's bad for your health to maintain a constant internal body temperature, experts say."

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

It feels like the periodic articles about saving money by skipping breakfast or how working at the office improves your mood

[–] [email protected] 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

If it's gonna be 90°F in my bedroom at night, you better believe I'm running that A/C

I'm not waking up in a pool of sweat after taking an extra hour to fall asleep because I'm too uncomfortable

[–] [email protected] 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Have you tried buying the cooling pillows and mattresses for thousands of dollars to solve your problems?

[–] [email protected] 12 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Actually yeah

They don't work that well

I should start sleeping in a net hammock or something

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

We're all going to need to sleep in hammocks in the +8C future

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

don't forget to spray it with the hose and put it in a freezer first!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

Just gotta get me one of those Mr. Freeze suits

Then I'll be set

[–] [email protected] 16 points 5 days ago (1 children)

On really hot summer nights I'm forced to sleep naked because the ac air doesn't reach my room and my standing fan sucks, I hate it. I wish I had a nice unit that could cool the room down.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 5 days ago

Thanks to your judicious use of cooling, this excess power capacity can be used by Grok to churn out yet another Hitler inspired piece of slop

soon we will all have to sacrifice everything for the datacenters.

thirsty? save that tap water here's 10 tips on how to filter stagnant pools so your local AWS center can keep running!

rolling brownouts? here's 10 backup generators that only cost $50,000 or more!

i find it hilarious there is an energy crisis in the U.S. when residential use was cratering thanks to LEDs, heat pumps, and insulation so the data centers immediately built like a hundred square miles of interior space in regions where demand was dropping like a stone.

they are so universally reviled, like across all political lines, i guarantee there will be attacks against them when the rolling brownouts start next year. and then you'll see the first IOF-style armed drone swarms patrolling them the year after that. after the first groups of rednecks are picked off by unseen robots people in the U.S. will quickly and submissively accept a few hours of power a day. after all, businesses will have backup generators (so you still have to go to work!!!)

it will be like Skynet but instead of an AI superintelligence it's a single billionaire with a smart phone

Sarah McLaughlin playing over black and white video of thirsty data centers while asking us to donate our excess rain barrel water

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

"what are you willing to donate to save your AI girlfriend from deactivation?"

[–] [email protected] 13 points 5 days ago

I have a smart watch that can read my skin temp and my server adjusts my fans and ac based on the reading so I am never too hot while sleeping. These experts are weak goml

In Occupied Korea, the government spread a myth about fans destroying the oxygen molecules in the air somehow in order to trick the people into using up less electricity in the summer. Some people in the country swear by this idea, to the point that they'll die of heatstroke before they'd consider putting on a fan at night.

EDIT: Didn't realise like every other comment mentioned fan death. I should probably read the comments before posting.

I thought the myth was covered for suicides
