An 83-year-old retired priest has been arrested for defying a newly enforced ban on pro-Palestinian group Palestine Action, just hours after the group was formally outlawed by the UK government.

The Reverend Sue Parfitt, from Bristol, was detained for holding a placard that read: “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.” She was among more than 27 people arrested on Saturday for acts of defiance against the proscription.

While Canada wants nothing to do with the United States, it looks like the UK is working extra-hard to demontrate it has achieved the fascism level needed to qualify for statehood.

I really wonder what Canadian capitalist are thinking. I guess their thoughts are to try to keep Canadian politics as "Liberal" as possible to avoid growing anti American sentiment along with anti capitalist sentiment (something that obviously goes hand in hand). I'd guess they are trying to avoid that connection and working to maintain national solidarity in place of what could very quickly be class solidarity if they are not careful.

Because at the end of the day the capitalist class of Canada is essentially just an extension of US capital. And I'm not saying this in an "Americas hat" kind of way. It's just how global capital works and even more so with Canada because of its geographical proximity.

I worry the capitalist in Canada are working to ensure the "pro Canada anti-American" politicians are well within their hands. And when the point comes to squeeze the working class of Canada harder it will likely be done through the means of "Canadian Nationalism"; and ensuring the masses view their suffering as a fault of "America" and not for what it really is; an attack in both countries on the working class.

This retired priestess is bad-assed and based.

I hope that she'll be safe. And I hope Israel can be stopped in their ongoing genocide against the people of Palestine.

for holding a sign stating her support of Palestine Action.

Saying "for backing Palestine Action" makes it sound like she was giving them money or something. But all she did was express an opinion.

Even though the Trump administration and the Republicans in our congress are actively trying to take away our freedom of speech, it's still nice that we are explicitly guaranteed that right by our Constitution. But there is no law that matters if the government itself doesn't follow the Constitution.

At any rate, I feel for our UK counterparts that they don't have even an empty guarantee of free speech.

@geneva_convenience

Malicious compliance by the police there.

Excellent, they managed to demonstrate the absurdity of the new law on the very first week.

Nah they do this stuff enthousiastically.
