This shit is kind of crazy. I had to go to the hospital this week, and they still make everyone wear a mask. You come in without a mask, you're getting a mask. Every doctor and employee and patient and guest. I can't say that everywhere where I am is good, in fact it's not, but at least the fucking hospital is serious.

I would love it if my hospital were like that. I've gotta go in regularly because autoimmune diseases, but my rheumatologist and nursing staff dropped masks the second they were allowed. This is a building that pretty much only treats people with cancer or autoimmune diseases. Absolutely wild.

goddamn, sorry to hear that. really fucked up for them to be like that, let alone that the context basically demands it. shit, context would make it a good idea before covid hit, let alone now.

I occasionally take my grandma to doctors appointments and they haven't required masks for well over a year.

i think i must just be very lucky that the medical services that i go to in my area have continued to take things seriously.

Divided between the immunocompromised who might die and hard-right reactionaries who think that vaccines inject microchips in their blood.

We should find the middle ground where the immunocompromised die and the reactionaries still bitch about it. /s

From my limited experience with a person that worked in a hospital it often is also logistics and practicability, as well as the "personal touch". To change masks regularly means you need stations for them, which is extra work that takes from the stuff you are already doing away a bit. It also means that you are less likely to get sick and others are less likely to get sick (except if Masks contain problematic substances and you are working with them for 40 years). Then people don't read your face so well when you wear masks, which is true for regular OP masks, too, and you have problems with glasses. But FFP2 masks and better ought to become standards now that the price for them fell by a factor of ten in medical context.

I hate to say it, but hospital staff where I live are majority anti-mask. Like, they gave me shit for wearing a mask in the hospital when my spouse was staying there

My experience has been the same. They seem confused that I still wear a mask. I have autoimmune diseases. I take immunosuppressants. Pretty much all of their patients are exactly like me. Absurd.

It's unbelievable. Do you happen to live in a place known for its big medical community and its reactionary politics? I do, and it's started to seem like my town is where doctors go when they have a medical degree but also insist the world is 6000 years old

Our OBGYN had a large, framed print of Jesus Guiding the Surgeon in their subwait area. Our GP decorates the halls of his practice with labeled photos from his Baptist mission trips to Africa. Our biggest ER had Jerry fucking Falwell preaching on the TVs of the main waiting room. None of this inspires confidence

i'd rather do untrained brain surgery on myself

I wonder how seriously you gonna take medical school when you know you can just pray and do some rosaries before a c section and jesus will guide you hand. And if he doesn't it was just god's will you are only the instrument.

I have never seen any medical practice displaying imagery like you describe. There is one local specialist who is known to pray over patients if you consent to it. (They don't do anything life/death.) I never been to their office so can't speak to the decor there.

I still remember Biden’s historic and inspiring presidential campaign slogan: “I can’t actually do anything, Jack!”
