Computer scientist here. I definitely do not think I'm better than a biologist.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

biochemist. i think I'm the worst lol

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I was actually on track to becoming a biochemist before I changed to computer science

you absolutely made the right choice. i regret not switching to CS

Xkcd really do have a panel for everything.

I notice how geologists are not even in the conversation.

It's because we are all outside playing in the dirt.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 hours ago

y'all are my favorite. rocks are cool.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 13 hours ago (3 children)

But how did the rocks you find TASTE?

I've always appreciated that as a prior valid qualification method in field geology as a biologist.

Licking our cultures, buffers, and samples tends to be frowned upon.

i mean we used to have mouth pipetting and DuPont chemists smoking in the lab and noticing the taste of their experiments on the cigs lol

I was once studying biology, got up to the point of doing field studies. On one trip, we came upon what looked to be animal droppings. He went on about how the diet of the animal obviously affects the flavor of the excrement and then told us he could tell us what deposited it just by tasting it and proceeded, to the horror of many present to pop the littler turd in his mouth and chew on it.

Then he revealed that it was actually just a misshapen tootsie roll he had one of the aids sneak ahead on the trail and plant for him to fuck with us.

The worst ones are... radioactive, or asbestiform. So....

Kyanite is harmless but nasty.

Our geoscience department lords above lowly biopesants by 1 floor. We like to throw rotting fruit at them below us, while heckling "Culture deez nuts."

We once found a group of bio students on a field trip.

We pranked up their van and took incriminating pictures.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 13 hours ago

And they are better for it

Biology is just applied chemistry. Chemistry is just applied physics. Physics is just applied maths. Everything is maths.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Math is just simplified physics. Physics is just simplified chemistry. Chemistry is just simplified biology.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 hours ago

Chemistry is just simplified biology.

Eh, for organic, maybe. For inorganic not really. And all the crystal stuff is just physics we appropriated. And the rest of materials science is rightfully ours as well and one day we shall take it back from the engineers.

This is one of my favorite xkcds

[–] [email protected] 4 points 13 hours ago

And holding up that entire stack is philosophy.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 13 hours ago

Not wrong at all, as true today as when it was first said.

Aren't most computer scientists more like technicians or engineers than actual scientists?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 14 hours ago

Computer science is so broad you have some truth to your statement. It's more science in the way math is a science as math is one of the underlying building structure of computer science. It also deals with languages and syntax so that's also a subset of science.

Some comp sci people are technicians, computer engineers, some being computer researchers, data scientists, etc
