Outgoing President Joe Biden on Monday moved to permanently ban offshore oil and gas drilling across more than 625 million acres of U.S. coastal territory, protecting swaths of the East Coast, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific, and Alaska's Northern Bering Sea from fossil fuel exploitation just before President-elect Donald Trump is set to retake power.

Permanently*

Until the next court strikes it down and Trump takes office.

How is it permanent? Trump's probably just going to completely undo it and no one will say a damn word.

This is more permanent than it could be...instead of being able to be undone via executive order, it would take an incredibly rare and twisted court ruling or an act of Congress. Neither is that unlikely, however repealing it won't be unilateral, and that means it'll take time and political capital.

rare and twisted court ruling or an act of Congress

you mean like how roe was trashed? or literally any other example of courts and congress doing exactly what trump wants?

Are people just figuring out that law is complicated? You’re right, it can be undone through corrupt actions but that doesn’t mean that the Biden administration hasn’t taken the steps they could to make it permanent.

i think it's been pretty thoroughly demonstrated that the law doesn't apply to trump

No one will escape his terror. Not women, not the immigrants who do all the hard work, not the planet or Bea Arthur fanclub members. Any joy in this world will suffer because Obama told a joke that one night.

He's a man, not a god. This isn't just him, it's a country more focused on money and fame and disaster than on quality of life. 🤷‍♂️ We live in a reality TV nation here in America. We have been building this for decades.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

I mean he does have the trifecta so he could undo basically anything (non-filibusterable) if he sets his mind to it.

They aren’t going to play by the rules, the justice system already proved that republicans can break the law and not face consequences.

Permanently*

How is it permanent if the president can unilaterally do it? We all know Trump is gonna reverse it just to spite all living things, right?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Apparently based on 2019 ruling only Congress can reverse this.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Thanks for the additional information.

Maybe I’m in a doomer phase, but I don’t see how it changes the end result. Reps have a slim majority in congress, and if I were a betting man I’d put down cash on more dems voting against party line than reps. This shit is getting overturned

Eh, It just makes it a bit harder. Trump tried to undo Obama's restrictions around drilling around Alaska and failed.....However, that was in 2019, which was before the Republicans had a sure footed majority of insane supreme court justices.

Roe vs wade shows that this current makeup of SC justices don't exactly care about prior rulings.

You mean the republican congress?

Outgoing President Joe Biden on Monday moved to permanently ban offshore oil and gas drilling

In his last two days or something? Anyways good if he manages it

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

Excludes the western Gulf of Mexico because?

[–] [email protected] -4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Thats so cute. The man giving bombs to kill tens of thousands of children is concerned about the wellbeing of tuna. Amazing

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Rejoice. He'll be out in a few days. And his successor, for sure, care about neither children in the middle east nor the environnement.

Everyone knows trump is an enemy of the working class. Genojoe is the wolf in sheep clothing. This kind of article is part of the wool he uses to cover himself
