To many historians, the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century CE has always been viewed as the end of the ancient world and the onset of the Middle Ages, often improperly called the Dark Ages, despite Petrarch's assertion. Since much of the west had already fallen by the middle of the 5th century CE, when a writer speaks of the fall of the empire, he or she generally refers to the fall of the city of Rome. Although historians generally agree on the year of the fall, 476 CE, and its consequences for western civilization, they often disagree on its causes.

Unlike the fall of earlier empires such as the Assyrian and Persian, Rome did not succumb to either war or revolution. On the last day of the empire, a barbarian member of the Germanic tribe Siri and former commander in the Roman army entered the city unopposed. The one-time military and financial power of the Mediterranean was unable to resist. Odovacar easily dethroned the sixteen-year-old emperor Romulus Augustalus, a person he viewed as posing no threat.

Romulus had recently been named emperor by his father, the Roman commander Orestes, who had overthrown the western emperor Julius Nepos. With his entrance into the city, Odovacar became the head of the only part that remained of the once great west: the peninsula of Italy. By the time he entered the city, the Roman control of Britain, Spain, Gaul, and North Africa had already been lost, in the latter three cases to the Goths and Vandals. Odovacar immediately contacted the eastern emperor Zeno and informed him that he would not accept that title of emperor. Zeno could do little but accept this decision. In fact, to ensure there would be no confusion, Odovacar returned to Constantinople the imperial vestments, diadem, and purple cloak of the emperor.

i just got fucking robbed by a private dentist. it was an emergency situation and the option was get it sorted now or let it fester for over a year while i hangout on a waitlist for any public dentist in the area and catch fucking sepsis. so now my mouth hurts AND my bank accounts fucked rage-cry

i'm just lucky i had some savings, the rest of my family would be completely screwed if this happened to them. every capitalist freak responsible for hollowing out our public healthcare system deserves to be [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] and i hope i live long enough to see it.

Real question: is it homophobic to have a fully automated luxury gay space communism shirt if you're mostly straight? I like this shirt I found online but I don't want to be a dickhead to the queer community.

Weirdest historical fact no one talks about:

A small number of Roman citizens lived to hear about the Americas

I recognize the Holy Roman Empire as the successor to Rome

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 years ago

The Sultanate of Rum is the only true successor to Rome.

for example just recently went on an hour long search session to see if different weapons still give different crit-range and crit multiplier meow-tableflip

i do enjoy the 5ed stuff a lot though, seems about the right level of complex. thac0 days i do not miss.

Antic Iranian engineering was insane. They managed to produce and conserve ice year-round in fucking deserts. Look at this; built millenia ago, some of them still standing. Also look at the qanats - some of them 70km in length and 200 meters deep, and many of them still in use.

I haven't actually listenend to the Chapo Trap House podcast. Should I?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 years ago

People here seem to enjoy perfomatively hating Chapo because of some history of feuding with a former incarnation of this site I wasn't there for, but if you aren't badly upset by a bit of arguably problematic humor and language it's really still very funny and a lot of people here still (mostly secretly) listen to it. I like it. It is primarily a comedy podcast meant to take the edge off existing in our current hell world, with a lot of mostly USA-focused cultural and political commentary that may or may not be for you. It's arguable that they focus a bit much on US electoral politics and are sometimes overcritical of AES projects, but their takes remain usually good imo and I don't feel the need to only listen to people I 100% agree with. They have a genuinely great history series about the thirty years' war. If you are interested in a bit more to-the-point news and editorializing that isn't comedy, the more recommend podcasts (e.g. Citations Needed) here have more of that. But those podcasts aren't funny. Depends what you're after.

Everyone that says they refuse to pay off their student loans is going to start to pay off their loans in a few days. The debt strike should have happened a long time ago.
