Little first hand addition about German (Schrott-)Wichteln:

  1. Not sure about it being a result of shitty secret santa spoils, it's mostly just about finding funny stuff, inside jokes or something to wind up your "victim"
  2. Similarly, nobody thinks about it as recycling - which is largely overblown by international social media, it's not that crazy or efficient here. Everyone has some random shit in their home, be it some ugly decor you got from your weird aunt, an underwhelming book or the result of impulse web-shopping.. So thats what gets passed on for someone else to deal with. Things you don't like but would feel bad for throwing out.

There are also some fun house rules here and there, where you roll the dice to pick a gift, steal from others or swap the gifts around. Add a healthy dose of Glühwein and you're entertained for a few hours
