Just tried making a new post that hotlinks the image instead of the html page, which I think is the behavior you were looking for.
I haven't figured out relative links for posts so just reload [email protected] it'll be there.
Found it; https://lemmy.world/post/848046
It achieves an expandable picture, yes. But it is only a picture.
When examining xkcd 2794 on the other site, I can note two differences:
There is also an xkcd_bot, which seems to include this format to each post:
Not sure if this bot is related to the image/URL behavior.
I especially liked that you can peek the image, but the post still refers to the full XKCD URL. And you also get the alt text, which I didn't notice at first.
I think what you're describing is a feature of whatever client you're using for reddit. (I know Relay does/did that, RES likely does so too).
If I use just a browser, the 2794 post that's on reddit is the same behavior as here: tiny preview, no peek, link straight to the page
Oh, you're right. I deleted my account yesterday, so deinstalling RES was only a logical next step. Yes, that seemed to be a RES feature.
