This tankie seems unaware of how the CCP manipulates public opinion.
If this kind of news ever reaches China, the authorities would always attribute it to crime, drugs, sex work and so on. They would portray it as the government improving the social order instead of violating human rights.
That's why they're asking for the "real" reason. He wants the BS PR answer to blindly believe so his worldview doesn't need to change.
Tankies are well aware of the authoritarianism. They believe it's for the greater good.
Even then drugs and sex work can be "victimless crimes". Social order for the sake of ultraconformity, because dictators and their henchmen want everyone to be exactly the same.
