Dieselpunk & Decopunk Art - Iron, Smoke, and Rivets

Guidelines

  1. Titles should be in the format "[Title]" by [Artist]
    • If adding the artists social media handle after their name, use [square brackets]
    • If adding a year after the title, use (parenthetical brackets)
    • If posting your own art, preface the title with [OC]
  2. Please include the original source in the post body
  3. This community is meant for showcasing artists' work - this excludes
    • AI generated artwork
    • Screenshots from films or games
  4. Submitting the link from the original source instead of downloading and rehosting is recommended
    • This will ease server stress on smaller lemmy instances
    • /!\ Many mobile apps don't generate previews unless the url ends with a common file extension /!\
    • Therefore, if possible, please strip all parameters after .png, .jpg, etc.
  5. Mark posts as NSFW when necessary (nudity/violence)
  6. Due to the inextricable nature of the dieselpunk artstyle and WWII content:
    • All nazi and nazi-like (example) insignia should be marked NSFW
    • I will clarify that this community has a zero-tolerance policy for nazi sympathy

alright; i skimmed the thread on reddit; and apart from the unreadably tiny image:

most of it seems like sensationalism and deliberate drama. oh noes, he drew a mech on a slope! and there was a being on the slope too!.^[the angle and scale are different? and there's a path too‽] some of the comments do seem like he possibly painted over existing photographs, but; that's not new. many artists do that. and he changed the style and added things, it's hardly plagiarism. some of them aren't even the same stance...

i think stegmaier says it best. it's possible i'm biased because i really like his art; but i don't think so, i think i would defend anyone in this position as this is just reddit witchhunts and idiocy

edit: okay i found the larger image: https://imgur.com/gallery/pEsUJ

  1. i think this is all just references. all artists do this. he often (like with this piece) says what his reference was, too.
  2. i don't think it's unusual to delete old art one's not proud of, unfortunately. i've come across many deleted pieces
  3. cool. this is just a claim with zero evidence
  4. oh no, he took inspiration from somewhere else (not that i see many similarities; to be honest. particularly not between him and stålenhag, whatever crul says)

I came to the same conclusion, but thank you for going the distance and compiling such a comprehensive primer on the facts of thing. 🤓🤘🏼 Hopefully, once that other site dies the true death, this post can serve as an elucidating and clarifying resource to future curious folks. 👨‍🍳🤌🏼
